Listening Works!

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

So I did "quadzilla and abs" (please see previous posts) Tuesday and took yesterday off (except morning cardio and calves, and cardio this morning with abs…ok i’m turning int oa freak about this…) and I feel incredibly better then I did on the last post.  So the rest is in.

Planning to do shoulders later today and back exercises tomorrow.

OK, So I’m not Superman …

Friday, August 8th, 2008

So I have discovered something about being "40 something".  I do cardio to blow off steam and it seems to set the stage for the day.  I get it done first thing in the morning, then do weights at nite.  I was doing cardio 5 times a week, swimming on the weekends and a 4 day split with additional arms/calves or something on a Sunday.

I went to Japan twice in July, which will mess with your head and your body, as well as went through a lot of long hours at work.  I hit a wall on weds.  I got a call that the son of a friend took his own life at 18, which just crushed me.  My spirits dropped and I thought a workout would help.  I just couldnt do it.  I realized that with all going on, I just was simply overtraining. I took the rest of that workout and yesterday off, got some sleep, took today off work to play some bass … and basically just rest up. I am feeling better but i do feel like I could take a nap if I gave myself the opportunity.

So back at it this aft, but I think I will do shoulders and arms and save the big stuff for Monday.  I guess I should revisit the routine and ensure I take a day off between the "big sets" (see quadzilla post) back and chest.  Any advice on an "over 40" split routine?

I am trying to listen to my body, however this time it was yelling and I didn’t hear it.

QUADZILLA!

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

From the pages on BB.Com I came across a legs workout I have not so affectionately called quadzilla.  It’s a little nutsy, but it appears to be workin just fine.

Leg Press …

220 x50, 240×45, 260×40,280 x 35, 300×30x2.  And if that doesnt make you want to hoop, 4 sets of 20 dbell lunges, 4 x20 of "lighter squats" and finish it with 4x 15 of leg extentions with toes out …

This is tough on the old boy … but it feels like an accomplishment when you are done.  I’m gonna feel this for a couple of days. Cardio is difficult the day after, I use it more for a good post day stretch the any meaningful fat burnin.

Yesterday i did back: dbell rows 75×2 sets, 65×2sets, 4 sets of cable pull ups, 4 sets of pull downs, 2 sets shrugs and some lower back work on the ball. I’m trying to keep my rep range around 12-15 these days, that seems to work best. Then I had to rehearse for 4 hours for a gig on Sat backing 3 "cougars".  I have a heavy 5 string bass that was not making the nite a lot of fun.

Some crazy drunk chick called at 5:05 this morning and woke me out of a wonderful sleep. Y’all know its never a good thing when the phone rings at that time of the day … so after running to get it I was incredibly happy to hear it was a wrong number.  I let "drunk gal" know I was happy about her call and her health choice.  I mighta mentioned she should get glasses, bigger phone buttons and probably some therapy before she turns into "aged alone drunk girl with health problems".  Jeezuz after a year of sobreity Liquor still haunts me!
