Muscles are UGLY
As a Personal trainer/ Fitness Instructor I hear it all the time from women of all ages…. "oh no- i dont want anything to do with weights! I wouldnt want to get all bulky and ……ugly".
Its almost laughable as the people who make these statements are so far from even displaying a little muscle definition that their fears are irrational let alone groundless. Frustrating for me though.
I point out that I use weights around 6 times a week and although I am ‘toned’ I am certainly not in competition league. (darn it!) "Oh- well yes you look ok’ they reply- "You look good, but I dont want to get all muscley".
So I ask how often a week they plan to work out? "Oh…twice a week maybe…"
Trust me- chances of creating ‘bulky muscles’ which will scare your mamma are approx…zero.*grin*
Personally I think muscles look fantastic. I have great respect for everyone who achieves a muscular physique- I do have an inkling of the hard work and dedication it has taken to get there! But not only do they look great- muscles make everything we do ..easier…..; walking, running, dancing, carrying the shopping, hanging the washing….if our bodies are trim and toned everyday life becomes easier and more enjoyable.
Muscles support our skeleton and help our bodies to be balanced and agile.
Finally- my favourite ‘fitness fact’. Muscles use energy just by ‘being there’. Fat just blobs on us- muscle is a powerhouse- burning fat while we sleep.
Now beauty is in the eye of the beholder- but something that useful should never be described as ugly

Its ironic that these people don’t realize you can’t have a tone physique without a muscular foundation! You just end up looking skinny like you have an eating disorder… Strange how with so many things in life we consult others on how to get what we want, but there are a few things where people just seem to think that while they don’t know everything, they certainly know what they don’t want (which is often just what they need). Women only have around 10% of the testosterone of the average male. It just doesn’t happen! Eventually they’ll come around though. I think a lot of ladies still just have that "Don’t lift more than 10lbs if you don’t wanna get bulky" nonsense scarred into their heads from all those beach workout shows from the early 90’s… On a different note, good for you for hittin the weights! Keep at it!

Ugly is in the eye of the ignorant. Beauty is in the mind and spirit of everyone of us. Muscles are to be used, embraced, and touched
