walked to church
after church shopping! which included a stop at MAC where a very nice rep helped me get all the things I need to create my GlamX look courtesy of Cathy Savage Fitness (CSF) and Ms. P!!! I am really lucky I am working with Cathy Savage and as part of her services she provides competitors with info on everything!  Absolutely amazing! Anyway, you send in some unvarnished photos of yourself and your suit color info and Ms. P will design a makeup look just for you!  Since I don’t wear makeup this is frankly a godsend!  There is so much to learn to compete and this just takes a bit of the pressure off.  Most of the products she recommended for me are MAC.  So, that’s why I went to the MAC store.   I ended up spending too much money $290 but I wanted to have the right brushes and everything I need to do this right.  Yeah a lot of money but given all I have forked over so far relative to competing (food costs, coaching costs, suit costs, tanning materials, etc.), this was nothing and well worth it.  When I first went in and saw the color of the lipstick P picked for me I thought yikes! but then I took a deep breath and decided to go with everything and see what it looked like.   The colors are actually really nice and will complement my competition suit color nicely.  The rep really liked the colors Ms. P picked and told me that several times.  I wore the makeup home so I could take a photo that I will post with this blog (if I can figure out what’s going on - according to the website my file contains potentially malicious code and is not allowed - I can’t figure out what’s wrong I have virus software - urgh!).  I was a bit concerned about whether I needed to get fake lashes but the MAC rep convinced me I should be OK with out which I must say makes me feel a whole lot better - one less new thing to learn right now.

Here’s what I learned about applying makeup from the MAC rep.  First, don’t start applying your foundation first.  Do that last.  Face it:  you are going to make a mess doing your eye makeup so accept it and get your eye makeup right and then you can worry about the foundation.  Second, don’t apply your eyeliner and mascara next either.  That goes on after you get the eyeshadow right.  So, what do you do first?  Apply your foundation primer and eyelid primer.   Now do your eyeshadow.  If you are using artificial lashes, apply these next.  Then apply your eyeliner and mascara.  Now do your foundation and finally line your lips and fill them with lip color.   I will be practicing doing my own makeup so more on all this later.

SOS Posing Clinic - awesome, awesome experience - I am so so so glad I decided to do this.  Jodi :) was there too and I got a chance to talk to her.  I so needed to do this.  I can’t say how great I felt when I saw her and she told me how proud she was of me.  I have been so unsure for too long.  I am doing April 19th but not doing the Jay Cutler Classic.  That’s fine and then we’ll see where we go from there.  I will ask about Maggie Fit when I have made it through Ocean State.  What was really cool is I met Jill who is also doing Ocean State!  So I will know at least one other person there.  She has a background in all this but will be doing this one after a long hiatus.  Paula used yoga as a way of introducing us to the essential elements for good posing.  I found this challenging but I really liked it - it reminds me of Pilates and I want to see if they offer this at NU.

High day 3 ST

Because I did so well at my weigh in this week and am on track for reaching 125 lb as my competition weight I decided to treat myself and went to Mike’s Diner for breakfast.  I love Mike’s it really is a Boston-area institution.  It is in the South End near Boston Medical Center.  You see a wide cross section of humanity there.  On weekends suburban families.  On weekdays, interns, police, city workers, and others from the area.  Many are regulars and the waitresses who are themselves an institution know their customers.  I love their omelets.  I usually get the veggie omelet (East Springfielder) as an eggwhite omelet without the cheese.  They stuff this with fresh veggies including broccoli, tomatoes, onion, spinach, and mushrooms.  The omelet is huge and always well done/well presented.  Never sloppy-looking.  And so, so tasty!!!  You usually get homefries and toast with that but another nice thing about Mike’s is their flexibility.  So, I usually opt out of the homefries and toast and get a cup of slow-cooked oatmeal - mmmm!  I usually eat half and take the other half of my omelet to go and they are also good about that, too.  That’s the other thing about Mike’s no fuss.  In fact, to illustrate the point I will mention that my omelet came with cheese and all I had to do was say that to the waitress and she took it back and had them do it again.  No fuss, no muss.  Last thing I like about it is that I have to walk a bit to get there and that makes it all the more worthwhile to me.  I enjoy the hike.  It gets me out and let’s me see a bit of BackBay.  That’s important to me because where I live in BackBay everything is literally at my doorstep - from my gym to my grocery store (Whole Foods) to my drugstore (CVS) and the University where I teach.  So, this gives me a bit of physical activity.

Breakfast
eggwhite veggie omelet w black coffee - ate half the omelet and took half with me for my snack at mid-morning.

Snack
10-oz herb tea

still stiff today - ugh!  but not as bad as I expected.  I was a bit worried about working out yesterday and doing Sick Savage Series #2 given how sore I was yesterday.  Today is cardio only so we’ll see how I do.  I am still miserable in terms of my cold/flu or whatever it is.  It just won’t leave.  I just took an Advil.  Also, I am so cold these days - don’t know if this is because of my illness or because of my weight loss.

Lunch
2.7-oz albacore tuna
wendy’s side salad
16-oz arizona diet green tea
125 cal 20P 3F 8C

WATP express 2-mi brisk walk x2 and 1-mi (75-min) - exceeded my cardio goal :)
I decided to use my WATP because I was really sore and tired.  I think this is key.  It really applies to all elements of your prep but it is critical to know what you enjoy and can do and to listen to your body.  You want to make it for the long haul here (in my case another 3-5 weeks).  If you eat foods someone tells you to but you don’t enjoy them then you will be unsatisfied and likely hungry.  If you are working with a trainer who gives you no choices I know some run more of a cookie cutter operation:  "Arnold says you eat cod and spinach,"  then gosh no surprise you are starved and want to binge.  If you are working with a cookie cutter then speak up and ask for alternative foods you enjoy and find satisfying.  That is one of the things I really like best about Cathy Savage and SOS, she gives you a list of foods and your macros and it’s up to you to decide what you want to eat.

Dinner
137-g sweet potato
103-g wellshire turkey
90-g spinach
24-oz Arizona diet tea
262 cal 30P 1F 35C

Snack
118-g smoked salmon
84-g Wellshire turkey
95-g spinach w cider vinegar and 1 tsp Udo’s
10-oz Arizona diet tea
16-oz pomegranate green tea

total 1174 cal 130P 23F 111C (5 meals and aout 3 L I getting closer and closer to making my water goal!)

ooh!  goody!  I have my makeup info back from Cathy and Jodi!!!  I am tentatively planning on leaving work early (for me) tomorrow, going to workout (cardio only day) and then heading off to the Mac store to get my loot!
I ordered the On Stage moisturizing lotion ($14.99) from JanTana.com today.  I want to see if that doesn’t help me achieve a more even tan. I also ordered another bottle of the JanTana scrub $8.50 (cheaper than JanTana) and ProTan BikiniBite (butt glue) $5.99 from Bodybuilding.com.

Don’t Look Now But People ARE Watching YOU :)

Monday, March 24th, 2008

There are really two subtexts for my post today:  tanning and what I posted as the title for today’s blog entry:  "Don’t look now but people ARE watching YOU!

Yesterday Sunday when I went to church with mom, I was all painted up with my JanTana.  I had decided because I am now 4 weeks out to practice tanning with my new tanning product.  Mom wasn’t too enthusiastic when I told her - she said it’s Easter not Halloween and she was even less enthusiastic after she helped me apply the JanTana Saturday evening.  Anyway as I was helping mom down the aisle to our usual pew she stopped to say hello to another older lady she often chats with.  Another woman seated in the pew in front of her turned around and immediately joine in.  My mom’s friend had noticed my "Tan" and asked about it and I was explaining how I was preparing for my figure competition.  This lady whom I have never spoken to and who has never spoken to us spoke up right away that she knew I had lost a lot of weight several years ago and that she had noticed how I kept it off.  She said I was an inspiration!  I realized then that she had been keeping tabs on me!  Wow!  You just never know.  She was very interested in what I had done to lose weight a and in the fact that I had lost so much weight and was so toned (no skin flaps).  Honestly, it just goes to show that your life is a witness to those around you.  When you eat healthy and exercise you may not realize it but you are speaking loudly to those around you.  So, I ask you what is your life saying to those around you today?

Saturday and Sunday were all about practicing tanning.  I purchased JanTana scrub, On Stage competition color, and the JanTana makeup.  Beginning Friday and Saturday (2x) I showered and used the JanTana scrub.  It isn’t at all foamy or bubbly.  It does have lots of little abrasive microbeads.  Most important if you are going to tan don’t use deodorant before applying the color.  I didn’t purchase the moisturizer - a decision I am rethinking - so I didn’t use that.  I may order it because I did notice some streaking and color problems particularly on my elbows, knees, and knuckles (dry areas).  Then I used the puff that comes with the Jan Tana On Stage competition color.  I applied it all over as much of myself as I could see and then my mom kindly helped apply color to my butt and back.  I did one coat.  It is a bit messy - good idea to stand on a towel that you don’t mind being stained - and I think you really need to wear disposable gloves when you do the application because my thumb and forefinger became almost black.  Not too attractive.

woke up Sunday morning (Easter) and applied the JanTana makeup.  It is very dark and I had a hard time getting an even coverage. You really need to work at it.  I suspect that I would have had a better match colorwise between torso/limbs and face if I had applied several coats of JanTana to my torso/limbs - I only applied one coat.  I also noticed that the makeup comes off really easily if/when you touch your face so it is a really good idea to keep your hands away from your face after applying it.   My mom said she thought maybe I thought it was Halloween because of how I looked.  I’ll certainly say it sure isn’t a natural looking tan so if you are newbie like me remember I told ‘ya :)

Good idea to wear clothes you don’t care about after tanning - I am thinking in particular of when you go to sleep the night before your comp.  The stuff comes off even when dry - guaranteed to get all over the neck of your clothing, bra, underwear and socks.  I also think if you are staying overnight in a hotel it is a good idea to wear long sleeve shirt and long leg slacks while you sleep so you don’t muss up the sheets too badly or bring your own sheets.  I was really pleased to see that when I took shower after taking my progress photos (I already posted these so you can check ‘em out) - most of the JanTana washed off me nicely.  So don’t worry you won’t have to run around looking like an alien from another planet the day after your competition.  That said, this stuff really does come off on clothing so that’s important to remember!

As they say, I think it is well worth practicing your tanning.  I am so glad that I did this.

Blog Entry

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Today was a very disordered eating day and I am not happy about it - girls this is not the way to eat and keep hard earned muscle but I was tired and not hungry and still felt pretty lousy (like food was not a good idea if you get what I mean).

OK so it was my first day back at work and I get greeted with "welcome back oh uh I can’t go to this meeting tonight at 6 pm because I have to teach a class at that time (like duh! you didn’t know that a week ago???) I want you to go."  I was so pissed!  I was spitting nails!  I was tired still felt lousy and this blankety blank pulls this on me!  Of course, I said yes and was angry and frustrated all day - don’t worry let it all out at the gym.  I hate it when I do stuff like this but the thing is I love my school.  I love the students.  Thank goodness for weight training!  What a blessing!  Best way to get rid of your aggressions.  So much healthier than stuffing your face which is what I used to do.
