Change

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Until about 5 years ago, I had always been obese - 250 lb not a good weight for someone 5′6" tall.  I hit the big four-oh though and realized life was going to pass me by unless I took hold of my life and changed something (this will be a theme).  I knew I needed help but in my family joining a group like Weight Watchers is like admitting you need to be admitted to the funny farm.  A good friend at work though went with me and that was the start of my weight loss journey.  I did pretty well and then plateaued.  I knew what I needed to do but I just didn’t think I could do it - exercise.  Another good friend told me all about her success at Curves for Women and soon thereafter a franchise opened about 2 blocks from my apartment.  I decided to check it out so I could say it wasn’t for me and a surprising thing happened.  I found that I actually liked it and just maybe I could do it.  This was a big ‘change’ for me and marked the beginning of my interest in weight training.  I found I really liked the machines at Curves and got a few exercise tapes that used free weights.  I got a set of 2, 3, and 5 lb DBs and next thing I knew I was hooked.  I wanted to know more and segued to a regular gym and signed up for a personal trainer, John!  At this point in my story I should mention I had lost 110 lb and kept it off for a year.  I was now developing more self-confidence and experimenting with other forms of exercise.  I found that none brought me the satisfaction that weights did so I decided to become serious and commit to a fitness lifestyle.  This decision led me to become more critical about my diet and to commit to eating clean.  So, here we are. Still more change to come.  Friday I quit e-Tools and the WW boards.  Time to lose the training wheels and go for it!  It has been almost four years since I made goal (5/30/03).  I still plan on attending meetings - it is time for me to give something back and help others change.  I am also eager to try my hand at competition.  My first step:  I am planning on attending a competition May 7th to see it first hand.

Rest Day

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

Rest day.  Went shopping with mom, had a nice lunch at an italian restaurant (salad, haddock, and steamed broccoli with black coffee), and even managed to get a nap in the late afternoon.  All in all a good day and much needed too!

Nutrition and the Value of a Nutritionist

Friday, April 13th, 2007

For a long time I did my own nutrition.  Frustrated with my inability to make the changes I wanted to in my body (belly and thighs) and mindful of my trainer John’s comments about the importance of good nutrition, I decided to see a nutritionist.

Well I have been following her plan for about a month and am I think finally starting to see some changes in my body and also in my general health.  I have always struggled with carbs - I have something of a love-hate relationship with them.  Can’t live with them.  Can’t live without them.  I tend to favor simple carbs and sugar products in particular.  Yeah I know everyone struggles with these.  No, not the way I do.  I can literally put away 2 pints of Edy’s ice cream, a large pack of m&m’s peanuts, and go on to bagels, cookies  you name it.  My old eating pattern consisted of several good days punctuated by a bad one.  Never could eat well for more than a week, if that.  Anyway, I think I am finally on the road to recovery.  I have only had 3 binges in 38 days and I actually had a two week period where I didn’t binge - yow!!  Even better I think that I am losing fat and maybe just maybe there is hope that I will be able to lose it where I want to and compete!

Bottom line here is that I am really glad I spent the money.  Well worth it!  An investment in myself :) and the future!
