Change
Monday, April 16th, 2007Until about 5 years ago, I had always been obese - 250 lb not a good weight for someone 5′6" tall. I hit the big four-oh though and realized life was going to pass me by unless I took hold of my life and changed something (this will be a theme). I knew I needed help but in my family joining a group like Weight Watchers is like admitting you need to be admitted to the funny farm. A good friend at work though went with me and that was the start of my weight loss journey. I did pretty well and then plateaued. I knew what I needed to do but I just didn’t think I could do it - exercise. Another good friend told me all about her success at Curves for Women and soon thereafter a franchise opened about 2 blocks from my apartment. I decided to check it out so I could say it wasn’t for me and a surprising thing happened. I found that I actually liked it and just maybe I could do it. This was a big ‘change’ for me and marked the beginning of my interest in weight training. I found I really liked the machines at Curves and got a few exercise tapes that used free weights. I got a set of 2, 3, and 5 lb DBs and next thing I knew I was hooked. I wanted to know more and segued to a regular gym and signed up for a personal trainer, John! At this point in my story I should mention I had lost 110 lb and kept it off for a year. I was now developing more self-confidence and experimenting with other forms of exercise. I found that none brought me the satisfaction that weights did so I decided to become serious and commit to a fitness lifestyle. This decision led me to become more critical about my diet and to commit to eating clean. So, here we are. Still more change to come. Friday I quit e-Tools and the WW boards. Time to lose the training wheels and go for it! It has been almost four years since I made goal (5/30/03). I still plan on attending meetings - it is time for me to give something back and help others change. I am also eager to try my hand at competition. My first step: I am planning on attending a competition May 7th to see it first hand.
