today’s cardio

July 13, 2008

OK so I am back to logging my cardio, because I know if I have to write it in the book I will be more committed to doing it!
So today I did 45 minutes on the treadmill.  My foot seemed to take it ok so maybe I can do treadmill regularly again.  I think I prefer the elliptical but it is easier to get a better workout on the treadmill, with the incline and speed adjustments.
So I did 45 minutes for 2.25 miles (avg speed 3.0 MPH) with speeds ranging from 3.0 to 3.7 and inclines ranging from 3.0 to 4.5!  I feel good although very sweaty…we will see how I feel tomorrow.
I really felt Firday nights workout yesterday…my glutes hurt when I stood, when I sat, when I breathed!!! so I guess we really hit them good.  It was a good hurt though!
So I am committing to 30 to 45 minutes a day of cardio every day (except possibly on resistance training days, depending on whether or not I get up early enough to do it on those days.)

I AM in better shape today at 57….

then I was when I was 30!

DOCUMENTED MEDICAL EVIDENCE:

About 25 or so years ago, I had to take a routine exercise stress test for work.  At that time, at about age 30, the test was inconclusive because I was not able to reach the target heart rate on the treadmill.

Earlier today, I had a routine exercise stress test which my internist suggested just to establish a baseline if there were future problems (as I am not experiencing any heart related symptoms.)  I spent a total of 8 minutes on the treadmill at various inclines up to about 16 and at various speeds, while attached to an electrocardiogram and a BP monitor.  Not only did I reach the target HR but the cardiologist was so impressed with the readings that he asked if I minded a few more minutes while he attempted to push me to the max.  I attained a HR of 161 which is 99% of my max with normal cardiogram and BP readings and an excellent recovery to normal BP after we stopped.  The cardiologist gave me a high five and told me to just continue what I have been doing!

So now it is off to Vegas for a week of late nights and bad food, but I will at least get the cardio in (every day I hope.)

Thanks for letting me share and for reading..I really feel great about this!

New Weight

May 15, 2008

I know that I am not supposed to weigh myself;
and I know that all scales need to be thrown out the window;
and I know that there are many reasons why one loses or gains weight….

however, all that being said, tonight at Bayshore on the same scale I have been weighing my self for years, I weighed 227 1/2, which is the lowest weight that I have been in 4 or 5 years (my max being 260!) so if we assume that there is some muscle mass gain (which has to be a good assumption, right???) I have gone from 260+lbs and a 46+waist to 227 1/2 and a 40 waist!!!

Bodybuilders are the greatest people in the world…

May 3, 2008

Bodybuilders are the greatest people in the world…where did they get that bad stereotype.

I sent an e-mail to this guy http://bodybuilding.com/fun/trans_o4016.htm  congratulating him on getting the over 40 Transformation of the Week on bodybuilding.com. He started training at 47 yo and competes at 50! And the very next morning I get this reply…

This guy is in the UK so there is absolutely no profit motive in his offer to help, and not likely that I would take him up on it, but How
cool is that?

By the way, the  good group of people he is talking about includes all the support I get from the guys at bodyspace.com (so would
it kill you to check in and comment once in a while??? :-)

Anyway, just thought I would share this.

Fat Mikey

April 27, 2008

Last week I was visited by Fat Mikey, the 10 year old me that lives inside my psyche and will be with me forever, I fear!  Not worth going into the whole story except to say I thought that he was gone, but he is not! So it is good that I am aware that he is there, trying to pull me back!

OK so I am just a bit psycho, aren’t we all!  Had an awesome quads and calves workout this afternnoon and feel better for it!

Be back soon.

He’s 55 years old. Once a judo champion, Valencia resident Bobby Yamasaki spends more time these days on weightlifting.
The soft-spoken man was training one morning and caught the eye of a former bodybuilder named Aram Nersesian who believed, despite never competing, Yamasaki could be a bodybuilding champion.

At 55, Yamasaki took the stage for the first time.

Local residents Bobby Yamasaki and Jesse Montemayor competed in two separate bodybuilding competitions recently, both taking first place in the Masters 50 and older division and third in the open competition.

Yamasaki competed in the Max Muscle Natural Bodybuilding Championship March 29.

The competition was one of two that Yamasaki has taken part in, both ending in first place finishes in the Masters 50 and over division.

The open competition allowed every adult age group to compete and consisted of 12 competitors, mostly in their 20s.

“I wanted to see how I matched up with people half my age,” Yamasaki said The accomplishments are unique because he recently started bodybuilding.

At 55 years old, Yamasaki has only been in two competitions. His first was in December at the NPC Excalibur Bodybuilding Championship in Culver City.

Yamasaki’s next competition will be May 24 at the California State Bodybuilding Championship.
After the California State Bodybuilding Championship, Yamasaki hopes to compete nationally.

As for Montemayor, he has already been awarded titles such as Mr. Los Angeles Natural and Mr. Natural Universe.

Montemayor, 52, retired from competition on a positive note after taking first and third at the Iron Gladiator Bodybuilding competition Saturday.

“It was a good feeling (to win). I knew I was prepared,” Montemayor said.

Montemayor, who’s son Brandon is the head coach for the Canyon High baseball team, began bodybuilding at the age of 39.

Within his first year, he became Mr. Universe and later received the same title in 2002.

In 1997, he competed at the ESPN Muscle Mania Championship, where bodybuilders from all over the world come to vie for a title, and placed second in the Masters 40 and over division.

Montemayor took three years off of bodybuilding to get his bachelor’s in business at the University of Phoenix. He will soon be graduating with academic honors.

While still in school, he returned to bodybuilding for one last competition.

60 Plus Ripped & Natural Competitors

April 3, 2008
UNTIL nine years ago, Dr. Neal Grossman
didn’t make a habit of parading around his bedroom in his skivvies and admiring his physique in the mirror. Nor did he ever imagine that his oldest son, then a teenager, would take one look at his father midflex and cry out, “Dad, put your clothes back on!” …In the last five years, the number of men and women in their 60’s and 70’s competing in United States Bodybuilding Federation shows has doubled to 16, said Brian Washington, the commissioner of the federation, another drug-free group. Those figures will not put senior softball leagues out of business any time soon, but in an age in which athletes are publicly flogged for using steroids and human growth hormones, it is heartening to find a cohort of older Americans hellbent on getting cut the old-fashioned way. Or so they say.
