CLEANER JUNK FOOD
I've made what used to be my Wendy's double burger and fries meal a bit cleaner and am saving money at the same time!
Friday a couple of weeks ago, I was off from work. My usual mode of operation was stopping at Wendy's on the way home to pick up the food and then would eat it when I got home. Well, this day, it was 5:30, I'm home, been there all day, its time to eat and I am sitting in front of the TV watching a good movie on cable. Didn't feel like getting up and certainly didn't want to get in the car. So........ I thought, "Why don't I make this myself?".
I had a batch of Walmart 15% steakburgers already grilled and wrapped up in foil in the refrigerator. There was a bag of Ore Ida Seasoned French Fries in the freezer.
So I made my own meal without leaving the house. Two steakburgers on a hamburger roll and 20 seasoned fries. Delish! This meal was about 150 calories less than the Wendy's meal with more protein and a lot less carbs( from the fries). Its also probably healthier as the burger and fries are grilled and baked rather than fried, plus there is much less sodium.
I wondered a couple of days later which was cheaper. So I calculated the cost of my home grown meal. The meat, burger and fries cost $2.96. The bill at Wendys was $5.57! Almost twice as much!
So now I'm eating my own home grown junk food meal 3-4 days a week.
Thank you!! I've been preaching this for ages. You can make healthy versions of favorite fast food meals. AND while people think fast food is cheap, it isn't by a long shot compared to what it is when it's homemade.
If people do what you did and look at the cost per serving, they'll see the difference in fast food and they're own homemade version.
Eating Healthy On A Budget...
I found your entry interesting thus I've added a Trackback to it on my weblog :)...
Thanks ShanBL. You are a smart lady! The cost is the reason I hardly ever eat out at restaurants any more. How can we justify the high prices for small portions and food preparation like frying that is physique unfriendly?
I always try to make my own stuff.....turkey meatballs are my favourite. I also love my protein pancakes most mornings, no wheat, just egg whites, milled flax seed, protein powder, grated apple, cinnamon, blueberries served with a squeeze of lemon....dellish!!!!!!!!!!
Keep up the clean eating, I feel great for it!
Thanks for popping by my journal again.
