Interesting, I dont have the issue with what i am wearing but more so in how I start out. I have to do some overhead pulldowns to stretch my upper body. If I dont, that mental block is there for the workout. I do relate totally! I just found out yesterday i too will have plenty more time coming up to spend workiing out. Have to stay positive and the best is yet to come!

I totally agree! I have on my blog topics list "Body for looks or body that can do?" It's a great question that I'm sure most people don't think of. Personally I'm thinking about how to incorporate some functional exercise into my cardio to round things out for me. I began running (ok, jogging) on the treadmill again--even though I know it doesn't burn fat, just to be able to do something instead of just lean out and build muscles. Probably will revive Kwan Do. I hope I'm never in hostile territory, but if I am, I'd like to be ready. Thanks again!

The last sentence of your article is critical, here's why......I've been on both sides of the coin and unfortunately, I'm on the side that just decided to make a healthly lifestyle change (really wasn't a new Years Resolution, more of a New Life Resolution). I have a home gym which is sufficient enough for me to make major progress before I need a gym. However, many people will make that treck into the gym, after years of layoff or never having been, trying to meet that New Year's Resolution. Once there they will come face to face with the "gym rats". For some this can be intimidating. They look around and see strong bodies, great bodies and then they look in the wall of mirrors at themselves and realize how bad things have gotten. It is in this moment that your last sentence has so much importance. You have an opportunity to help them not become another statistic. You own them nothing, but if you can be kind enough to offer them encouragement from time to time, it might be enough to get them through those ackward first days. Like it or not, by default, many of you on this board will become a health role model and inspiration for those who are struggling. I hope someday I can have that honor. So don't be afraid to make a suggestion about trainers or diet. Don't be afraid to be what you are....a role model. PS: Except for the guy who is trying to push 315lbs on the bench after a 20 year layoff. I'm afraid I would have to sit back and watch that, just for comedy value. I last benched 385 lbs in 1986 and am now starting at 135 lbs (sorry, at my age I already have enough pain in the morning). Thanks for your article, in particular your point about diet. I've always struggled in that area, even when I was in very good shape. I'm taking that part to heart now. Good luck to you in 2009 my friend!
