Prolab Lean Mass Complex

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/pl/lean.html

I am rating the Vanilla and Cinnamon flavors; I have not tried Chocolate yet.

Serving size: 1 packet (94 g)

Amount per serving:
cal - 390
pro - 40
car - 40
fat - 8 (sat - 3)
fib - 4
sodium - 130 mg
sugars - 5
potassium - 760 mg
calcium - 300 mg

Ingredients
whey protein concentrate, barley, hydrolyzed oat flour, brown rice powder, calcium caseinate, sunflower oil, milk protein concentrate, natural and artificial flavors, l-glutamine, whey protein isolate, vitamins and minerals (potassium chloride, sodium chloride, dipotassium phosphate, vitamin e acetate, ascorbic acid, niacinamide, ferric orthophosphate, zinc oxide, d-calcium pantothenate, copper gluconate, maganese sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin, vitamin a molybdate, sodium selenate, cholecalciferol, cyanocobalamin), mct oil, lecethin, carrageenen, mono- and diglycerides, sucralose, sodium silicoaluminate.

Vanilla taste: 8.9/10

Cinnamon taste: 9.7/10

This is one of the better vanillas i’ve tasted. It’s not too sweet, and has a thickness to it like a real shake, with water only.  Cinnamon is ridiculously good.  I actually crave it now that I’m cutting.

Mixability: 9/10

Instantized, mixes with a spoon. Not a single grain went undisolved in a shaker.  Nice in oats, too if you’re bulking.

Price: 8/10

$40.99 for 20 packets on bb.com breaks down to about $2.05 per serving. While this isn’t cheap, Lean Mass is not a protein powder, but a MRP, and as such warrants a higher serving price than just whey.

Content: 9/10

Good carb and protein amounts, good (whole grain) carb sources. 2 g l-glutamin, 3mcg b-12 and 9 mg iron just for starters. Very complete MRP, imo.

Overall: 9

This is the first MRP i’ve really liked based on both taste AND ingredient profile, and it doesn’t get old.

MHP Probolic SR

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/mhp/pro.html

I have tried vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and banana. Since i don’t feel like posting individually for each flavor, I’m listing the content of strawberry, but there is some variation between flavors.

Serving size: 1 scoop (33 g)

Amount per serving:

cal - 140
pro - 20
car - 2
fat - 3
fib - 0
sodium - 230 mg
calcium - 670 mg
potassium - 490 mg
sugar - <1

Ingredients:
Probolic sustained release amino acid enhanced protein matrix [supro soy protein isolate (with lecethin), calcium caseinate, and whey protein concentrate, branched chain amino acid blend (l-isoleucine, l-leucine and l-valine)], lipobolic anvanced lipid complex [medium chain triglycerides complex, borage seed oil powder (10% gla), conjugated linoleic acid complex (78% cla), evening primrose seed oil (4.8%gla), flaxseed powder (8% ala), and omega III complex (7.5% epa & dha)], natural and artificial flavors, stearic acid, gum blend (xanthan gum, cellulose guma nd carrageenan), beet color, silica, lecethin, malic acid, acesulfame potassium, sucralose, citric acid. whew.
Strawberry Taste: 8/10
Chocolate Taste: 7.5/10
Vanilla Taste: 7.5/10
Banana Taste: 5.5/10

Had i posted this a few months ago, the rating probabaly would’ve been higher, but I believe that some of the great proteins I’ve had lately have ruined things for some other reviews. Now that i have had some truly excellent tasting flavoring systems, I am less impressed and less accepting of mediocrity when it comes to protein. The vanilla, chocolate and strawberry are decent, but i was very disappointed in the banana. I was really looking forward to a different flavor, but it is weak and has a slightly bitter aftertaste. Note that i only mix with water, not milk.

Mixability: 8.5/10
No problems here. A tiny little bit of residue on the side of shaker, but generally easy. Not instantized for spoon mixing, not good in oats.

Price: 6/10 $29.95 on bb.com for 2 lbs, or 28 scoops. This is roughly $1.07 per scoop. If you are like me and often consume 2 scoops at a time, that is a $2.14 serving. I would be ok, but not thrilled with that price at a great taste, but I am not impressed.

Content: 8.8/10
I really do like the content of this product. There are going to be disagreements about soy being the first protein listed in the ingredients, but I’m ok with that. If this is the only protein you give your body, ever, then maybe it’s a problem. But i’m going to go out on a limb and assume we all have other sources ingested daily and are not relying on soy as our main protein supply. It is fine. I also like that this protein blend has sources that digest at different rates, hence the ‘SR’ or sustained release profile. I don’t think it is actually a 12 hour muscle feeder as it claims, but it should provide a continual supply at a decent length of time. The glutamine, aginine and bcaa levels are quite high as well.

Overall: 7/10
The content is good, but the flavor doesnt’ impress.  I could be swayed if they come out with a peanut butter flavor…. :)

Primaforce Substance WPI

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/prima/wpi.html

I have tried the watermelon, chocolate and vanilla flavors.

Serving size: 1 scoop (25.7g)

Amount per serving:
cal - 95
pro - 22
car - 1.5
fat - 0
fib - 0
sodium - 90mg
potassium - 120mg
sugar - 0

Ingredients:
whey protein isolate, natural and artifical flavors, cellulose gum, lecethin, sucralose, acesulfame potassium.

Taste: 9.8/10

Heaven. I have only tried the watermelon in water, and the chocolate vanilla in water and in my oats (f-ing fantastic), as I don’t mix my WPI proteins with milk ever, but I love it. I just can’t give anything a 10/10 on flavor because i might taste something better one day, and what would i rate that??

Mixability: 10/10

Disolves completely and easily in water with a spoon and/or in shaker. Disolves completely and easily in oatmeal.

Price: 9/10

$22.89 for 2 lbs on bb.com for 35 scoops breaks down to $0.65 per scoop. Even if your serving size is 2 scoops in water as mine is, that is $1.30 per serving, which is cool with me.

Content: 9.5/10

high quality protein isolate, bcaas and glutamine, lactose and aspartame free.

Overall: 9.575/10

An all-around winner.
I sure wish it came in peanut butter, though…

Dorian Yates Approved CNP Professional Pro Dessert

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Damn, that’s a long name.  :)

http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/dya/dessert.html

Chocolate flavor

Serving size: 1 packet (41 grams)

Amount per serving:
cal - 145
pro - 25
car - 4
fat - 3 (sat - .5)
fib - 1
sodium - 550 mg
potassium - 400 mg
calcium - 450mg
sugar - 1

Ingredients:
protein blend (micellar casein - natural form milk protein, whey protein concentrate - milk protein, peptide bonded glutamine, egg albumen), dutch cocoa, natural and artificial flavors, sunflower oil, low de maltodextrin, thickening agents (tetrasodium pyrophosphate, disodium phosphate), potassium chloride, sodium chloride, cellulose gum (for smoothness), sweeteners (sucralose, acesulfame potassium).

The reason i am reviewing this product first is because it saved my life in September! I was cutting and i hadn’t had a cheat meal in over 2 months so this was about as close to junk food as i get.

Taste: 8.5/10

This stuff really is good. I wouldn’t call it pudding, it’s more the consistancy of restaurant chocolate mousse. the only reason it didn’t get a higher score is that it gets old; I wouldn’t want it daily, but it’s a good treat once a week.

Mixability: 9/10

5 oz cold water, let set 3-5 minutes. Easy. It comes out really perfect when made in a shaker cup and then poured into a small bowl, but is pretty good just fork mixed in a bowl. i didn’t expect it to mix as easily as a protein drink because it has thickening agents, so i think it mixes well for what it is.

Price: 9/10

On bb.com it is $24.79 for a box of 15 packets, which is roughly $1.65 per serving. I think this is a good price for a snack, particularly one this tasty. i have definitely paid more for snacks i’ve enjoyed less.

Content: 8/10

I definitely appreciate that the main protein source is cassein, which is a great slow- digesting protein for the evening, which is when i crave sweets and am more likely to eat the pudding. There are also 3 grams of glutamine per serving. I am not too thrilled about the sodium content.

Overall: 8.625/10

A great anti-cheat.
It would be perfect in peanut butter flavor…
