Props to BB.com’s older guys!

Got to say I’m really impressed by quite a few of the "older" guys her on BB.com! In my profession I meet tons of middle aged guys (and women) with beer guts, poor fitnesslevel and a whole bunch of excuses for not working out. One of my main motivations for working out is that I want to be healthy. I don’t want to become one of those guys… When time comes and I (hopefully) have children I want to be able to run around with them and no chance in hell if I have a son will he be able to put me on the ground in a wrestling match before I’m 60…ok, maybe 57…it depends :-)

Because of my profession and being surrounded by so many unhealthy souls I started to loose faith in that generation. But looking at the "older" guys here on BB gives me so much motivation for living healthy and setting goals that doesn’t expire until I die. I have nothing but respect for somebody in their 40s and 50s who makes time for working out, eating right, being a family man, works hard in their profession and who doesn’t even consider being full of excuses. When I become that age hopefully I’ll at least measure up a little bit to those guys.

I never thought I would say these words: I like looking at pictures of buff men in their 40s and 50s!! (thank God it’s for the "right" reasons…puuh…) ;)

The ‘older’ men on here look great. My dad as cute as he is and as much as I love him, I wish he would look after himself the way these people do. He used to be really fit, bull riding, arm wrestling competitions, all that stuff, then I don’t know what happened. I pester him all the time to get back into it, as do my brothers. They are both in shape and compete, all that good stuff. Hoping we can get him into it, its never too late. I give props to these men and women too!

For me, I feel better from working to be fit at 47. I’m no Joe Athlete, and never was a jock in school, but I feel better now than I did at 25. My lower back pain from scoliosis went from being a regular problem to being rare. And with improved diet, I have FAR FEWER problems with migraines & getting sick. And I like being able to be an occasional weekend warrior at something, and not having it cripple for for 2-3 days afterward. :D

I’ll admit vanity is a part of it, but the improved quality of life is a real motivator. And I will have 2 teenage daughters in my mid-late 50’s. I have no choice if I have any hope of keeping up………

Oh, and PS: I like looking at pics of 40 & 50-somethings who are in shape too. What a great motivator & reminder that while it takes commitment & hard work, getting in decent shape is possible.

You are definitly one of those guys, Al! Vanity will always be a motivational factor as well. But when I finally saw the big picture, training (cardio) just became so much more easier to complete. And Al, you better pack on some solid muscle in the next few years so that you can scare away the boys running after your teenage girls!

I experience the same with my father, Tammy. Luckily my mom has become a little more concious of what they are eating, and he’s lost some weight. Hopefully I can get the message through that exercise is necessary before it’s too late.

I can take negative and positive comments, but I also have a right to respond to them! And I don’t care that people comment on my blogs, but when you start complaining about what I’m saying, then don’t keep coming back and reading them, lol. It’s just that simple.

hey pal, i agree its good to see so amny folk in their middle age (me being one of those) actually taking care of themselves.
i.ve got two kids, one under 2 and the other just over a week old, but i want my kids to be proud of me and not embarrased to say ‘that my dad’ except of course when im 60 and swinging from a tree swing shouting for them to join me!

  7. domers50 Says:

Haha! Hopefully you’re swinging from a tree because you’re fit and healthy, not because you became an old coockoo :)

  8. spiderpants Says:

hehe. im a little cookoo just now. imagine what it’ll be like in 20 years time :D

  9. domers50 Says:

My guess is that your kids are going to love more if you’re a little bit cookoo with tons of energy, rather than a couch potato. And if that’s not motivation to keep on living healthy, I don’t know what is :)

Thanks Kjetil. And regarding the big picture, don’t forgot that training/cardio is only part of it. It took me YEARS to learn that keeping the BF down, esp with a slowing metabolism, is more about a clean diet than the exercise. I kept in shape for years with a layer of BF covering up my efforts, because the workouts can’t compensate for a poor diet. I’m slowly reducing the BF with that knowledge.
