Some of you out there may or may not know, but I occasionally do demos throughout the Midwest for Gaspari Nutrition. These serve as great way for Gaspari customers to converse with a “product expert” and gain a different perspective on the supplementation then what the typical supplement shop employee can offer.
For me, I’ve actually learned a great deal about consumer behavior while doing these. Much of this experience has been invaluable and I’m very happy my superiors asked if I would do this which has taken me outside of my research and digital marketing roles.
From now on I’ll be posting my schedule here which can also be found on the Gaspari Nutrition website (www.gasparinutrition.com). If you check it out we do have a national demo team comprised of the bodybuilding greats like Cathy LeFrancois and even Rich Gaspari himself takes pride in doing these as well. Hopefully we’ll be coming to a town near you soon!

Detection of bumetanide in an over-the-counter dietary supplement.
Hoggan AM, Shelby MK, Crouch DJ, Borges CR, Slawson MH.
Bumetanide is a loop diuretic used clinically to treat heart failure, acute renal failure, high blood pressure, and edema. However, diuretics may also be used by athletes as masking agents and to decrease weight. Taken as masking agents, diuretics increase urine production and decrease urinary concentrations of banned performance-enhancing agents, such as anabolic steroids. StarCaps is an over-the-counter dietary supplement marketed as a diet aid. The manufacturer claims that the product contains only natural cleansing agents and emphasizes that it is free from traditional appetite suppressants such as sympathomimetic amines. However, no such disclaimer is made concerning diuretic agents. A single StarCaps capsule was administered to two male and two female volunteers, and their urine specimens were collected at discrete intervals (2, 4, 8, and 12 h) post administration. The specimens were analyzed by a high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry quadrupole (HPLC-MS) method, and bumetanide was detected in all specimens (4.6 to 351.3 ng/mL). Adjusting the bumetanide concentrations for creatinine content did little to normalize the excretion profiles. Bumetanide was also detected in the StarCaps capsules at concentrations approaching therapeutic doses. HPLC-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry was used to confirm the presence of bumetanide in the urine samples and StarCaps capsules. The results showed that unregulated dietary supplements may put consumers at risk for unwitting consumption of prescription medications, and that it is possible for athletes to inadvertently test positive for bumetanide and face disciplinary actions. |

Bumetanide is often compared to furosemide (Lasix) in terms of effectiveness to fight edema and are part of the most powerful family of duiretics. You should know that bumetanide is actually considered anywhere from 15 to 100 times more potent than furosemide. What truly disgusts me about this is that by simply taking an NSAID with this you can cause kidney failure or an extreme state of dehydration requiring emergency treatment. GOOD JOB!!!!!

In scanning various forums I finally found out the ingredients of the highly anticipated BSN Atrophex. I ran across an ad for it in the latest issue of Muscle & Fitness which sparked some interest again that first began a few months back. In the era of caffeine, yohimbine, and guggelsterone laden fat burners giving false hopes to millions of supplementers I have no qualms in saying BSN has hit a home run developing ATROPHEX. Have a look at the ingredient profile and tell me what you think:
Quote:
Serving Size: 1 cap
Atro-Phex-Extreme Multi-Action Rapid and Sustained Release Energy and Weight Management Technology = 569mg Prop Blend
Green Tea, Tuber Fleece Flower, Loranthus Parasiticus, Caffiene, Carum Carvi l Caraway Plant (source of Carveol), Swertia Chirata (source of Magiferin), Razberi-k (Rasberry Ketones), N-Acetyl-Tyrosine-Ethyl-Ester Monohydrate, Sulbutiamine, Vinburine, Vinpocetine, Vincamine, Isopimpinellin 10%, Isoquercitrn, D-Myo-Inositol-1-4, 5-Triphospahte Hexsodium, Cinnulin PF, 7-Keto, DICANA |
This is definately going to be a blockbuster supplement and for once, BSN might actually have a product worth trying. I guess we’ll see when it’s released in a few weeks.

Recent studies have shown that an extract from Alnus Hirsuta (Manchurian Alder) is a potent fat burner in mice. Essentially, it serves as a diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT) inhibitor in the liver. DGAT is primarily responsible for triglyceride accumulation in tissues because it catalyzes the final reactions in the known pathways of mammalian triglyceride synthesis. Increased triglyceride accumulation can lead to obesity. It has been observed in mice lacking DGAT they have increased energy expenditure and increased insulin sensitivity and marketdly less adipose tissue mass. This may seem great at first but keep in mind triglycerides are an an integral component of lipoprotein particles synthesized by the liver and small intestine, skin sebum secreted by sebaceous glands, and milk produced by mammary glands in females. Total inhibition by a supplement would probably not be wise. Since this has also inhibited triglyceride (TG) formation by human HepG2 cells it has obvious merits in a supplment and as some researchers or pointing out, the treatment of obesity. It’s a fine line to be walked but I’m sure someone can come up with the right play on words so a supplement using betulinic won’t be miscontrued to treat a disease. This is obvious one small puzzle in the potential uses of triterpenoid glycosides and their potential as herbal sources for fat burning supplements.

With all the hype surrounding MuscleTech’s new NO2 product, naNOX9, I’ve seen a lot of folks bashing the term Nanoparticulation Technology. Now a lot of you know that I have reviewed products by MuscleTech so of course I was interersted in this new form of oral delivery of supplements. The bottom line folks, this is not psuedoscience and has a strong foundation in research.
As for my own interests, I’m lucky enough to have a researcher, Glen S. Kwon, Ph.D. of the University of Wisconsin Pharmacy School, that I am trying to arrange an interview with to discuss the application or benefits of using nanoparticulates orally as a delivery method. Hopefully, he’ll except my request.
The reason for my interest in this is because rapid diffusion of supplements has obvious advantages. Just think what it would be like to not have to wait 30-60 minutes for your preworkout supps to kick in? For some, I know you base meal timing around this which can be a pain in the ass. It would be nice to just have your preworkout cocktail right as walk into your gym and then have it go into action as you begin your warm-up session. Some may think this is a novelty, but to serious supplementers this would be a valued luxury.
Here are some resources to better understand nanoparticulation and it’s possible application to oral delivery of supplements. This is cutting edge boys and girls so welcome to 21st century suppplementation:

Zoeller RF, Stout JR, O’kroy JA, Torok DJ, Mielke M. Effects of 28 days of beta-alanine and creatine monohydrate supplementation on aerobic power, ventilatory and lactate thresholds, and time to exhaustion. Amino Acids. 2006 Sep 5;
Abstract
“The effect of beta-alanine (beta-Ala) alone or in combination with creatine monohydrate (Cr) on aerobic exercise performance is unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of 4 weeks of beta-Ala and Cr supplementation on indices of endurance performance. Fifty-five men (24.5 +/- 5.3 yrs) participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study and randomly assigned to one of 4 groups; placebo (PL, n = 13), creatine (Cr, n = 12), beta-alanine (beta-Ala, n = 14), or beta-alanine plus creatine (CrBA, n = 16). Prior to and following supplementation, participants performed a graded exercise test on a cycle ergometer to determine VO(2peak), time to exhaustion (TTE), and power output, VO(2), and percent VO(2peak) associated with VT and LT. No significant group effects were found. However, within groups, a significant time effect was observed for CrBa on 5 of the 8 parameters measured. These data suggest that CrBA may potentially enhance endurance performance.”
What I found interesting about this study is the fact the researchers loaded both beta alanine (Carnosyn) 1.6 grams and creatine/dextrose 5.25g/34g (Phosphagen Elite) for times a day for six days and then used a daily maintenance dose with same single dosing amounts. Given the positive out come of this experiement with regards V02 at lactate threshold (LT), VO 2 at ventillary threshold (VT), power output at LT, power output at VT, and VO2 max VT do you think loading beta-alanine might contribute to higher rate increasing intramuscular carnosine levels?
FYI- VO2 max is the highest rate oxygen can be used by someone exercising.
Other studies have shown that typical beta alanine supplement requires around 4 weeks to significantly raise intramuscular levels to anywhere from 58.8% and 80.1% after 10 weeks of supplementation (1). I’d be interested to see which company comes out with the first beta-alanine/creatine product and calls for a loading protocol to increase both intramuscular creatine and beta alanine levels. Could it be EAS? Who knows. However, I would be more than happy to try it out because both creatine and beta alanine are fantastic supplements.
*This was funded by a grant bye Abbott Laboratories which owns EAS. However, no EAS researchers were directly involved with the actual experiment.*
