Under the advice of a friend I’m going to start lifting heavy again. I’ve been somewhat tentative as of late due to various injuries but I’m healthy now and its time to step my game a bit. I do all movements with a focus on slow eccentric control. I could literally feel my hamstrings being torn apart on the SLDL. I’ve also been going into a fuller stretch as well.

Hopefully, this will put some much need size and “hang” on to my hamstrings. They aren’t terrible in a side chest pose, but could always use some work. I would kill for hamstrings like these (and every other muscle group…lol).

Intra-Workout Carbohydrate Injestion In Relation to CNS Fatigue

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008
It appears that ingesting carbohydrates along with electrolytes (sodium and potassium are also in SizeON) these negative physiological processes are attenuated (5). By drinking something like SizeON you most notably limit the effects of that 5-HT has on limiting dopamine production (6) by limiting tryptophan transport into the brain (7).

Not during exercise, but in a resting state yes. Here is a great paper on the matter. I suggest anyone who considers dosages of intraworkout BCAA’s over 7 grams highly effective in improving performance versus carbs read this. I’m still playing devil’s advocate on the matter for what it’s worth.

Detection of bumetanide in an over-the-counter dietary supplement

Detection of bumetanide in an over-the-counter dietary supplement.

Hoggan AM, Shelby MK, Crouch DJ, Borges CR, Slawson MH.

Bumetanide is a loop diuretic used clinically to treat heart failure, acute renal failure, high blood pressure, and edema. However, diuretics may also be used by athletes as masking agents and to decrease weight. Taken as masking agents, diuretics increase urine production and decrease urinary concentrations of banned performance-enhancing agents, such as anabolic steroids. StarCaps is an over-the-counter dietary supplement marketed as a diet aid. The manufacturer claims that the product contains only natural cleansing agents and emphasizes that it is free from traditional appetite suppressants such as sympathomimetic amines. However, no such disclaimer is made concerning diuretic agents. A single StarCaps capsule was administered to two male and two female volunteers, and their urine specimens were collected at discrete intervals (2, 4, 8, and 12 h) post administration. The specimens were analyzed by a high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry quadrupole (HPLC-MS) method, and bumetanide was detected in all specimens (4.6 to 351.3 ng/mL). Adjusting the bumetanide concentrations for creatinine content did little to normalize the excretion profiles. Bumetanide was also detected in the StarCaps capsules at concentrations approaching therapeutic doses. HPLC-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry was used to confirm the presence of bumetanide in the urine samples and StarCaps capsules. The results showed that unregulated dietary supplements may put consumers at risk for unwitting consumption of prescription medications, and that it is possible for athletes to inadvertently test positive for bumetanide and face disciplinary actions.

Bumetanide is often compared to furosemide (Lasix) in terms of effectiveness to fight edema and are part of the most powerful family of duiretics. You should know that bumetanide is actually considered anywhere from 15 to 100 times more potent than furosemide. What truly disgusts me about this is that by simply taking an NSAID with this you can cause kidney failure or an extreme state of dehydration requiring emergency treatment. GOOD JOB!!!!!

Chest and Tricep Training 1/2/08

Friday, January 4th, 2008

Incline Dumbbell Presses (2-0-4): 120lb’ers x 6 x 3

Smith Machine Flat Bench (4-2-0): 365lbs x 6 3

Flat Dumbbell Flyes: (2-4-4): 50lb’ers x 8 x 3

Cable Flyes: 60lbs per side rest pause to failure x 2

Wide Grip Cable Extensions (1-0-4-2): 140lbs x 8 x 3

Overhead Cable Extensions (1-0-4-2): 140lbs x 8 x 3

Laying Dual Dumbell Extensions: (2-2-4): 30lb’ers x failure x 2

Incline Twisting Broom Handle Sit-Ups: BW x 20 x 4

Stepmill: 20 Minutes

I’ll begin to include the tempo times to my workouts just to put the weight I’m lifting in perspective. By doing this, you can easily discern that I focus heavily on slowing the eccentric portion of most exercises down a bit. This elicits a lot more stimulation and subsequent muscle damage which can leave you aching. However, this is what also gets you to grow and is why the old adage, “no pain, no gain” certainly holds true.

I’ve also begun a bit a cardio again. I’ll be doing only 20-30 minutes a day after weight training just for general cardiovascular health and to hopefully limit any fat gain. For you guys out there who only hit the weights and avoid all cardio you should consider at least some. I know many of you are afraid of burning too many calories, however the body needs an efficient cardiovascular system to not only deliver oxygen to your muscles, but also valuable micronutrients like carbohydrates and protein.

It’s 2008!

With the beginning of the New Year we all have a new set of directives and goals to accomplish. I myself won’t be sharing mine this year just for the mere fact I’d like to keep the private among the many things which I divulge about myself in this blog. However, one thing I can assure everyone out there in cyberspace, I will be turning up the volume of this blog a notch.

Since joining the fraternal order (I use this term VERY loosely) of supplement manufacturers this past April, I must say it reminds me a bit of Animal House. If I were to share the details I’m sure I’d piss some competitor off by comparing them to Bluto or Dean Wormer. Regardless, it has been one hell of a ride so far and luckily I’m with one of the good guys.

One project I am greatly looking forward to is the 2008 BodyBlog Transformation Contest and assisting the competitors in any way I can. To me, helping people meet their fitness goals has always been an endeavor I’ve always been proud of. I’ve also prided myself in doing this on the forums, etc without ever charging a single person.

This is a group of five VERY dedicated individuals who have accepted the challenge of busting their asses for 12 weeks of pure adrenaline fueled physique sculpting. Unlike last year’s contest, this one will be including video footage of the contestants undergoing grueling workouts even the most seasoned competitors can respect.
I ask all of you out there reading this to please support them in anyway possible (link to the contest area is in the image above). These aren’t competitive athletes but are individuals who have decided to take a drastically different approach to life. I commend them on their bravery because this takes an iron will to succeed. My hat goes off to them.
I’d also like to thank the co-sponsoring companies as well. It’s nice to see other organizations actively participating in the BodySpace community.
