Discussion

OMFG it was the first day and I didn’t notice anything!!! WTF! LOL..no shit sherlock. Most supplements in this genre you aren’t supposed to feel any real effects the first day. If you do its called placebo or more commonly known here as BROCEBO.

Since I don’t have much to be negative about today or positive for that matter I’ll show you my basic diet set up and how I’ll be taking my supplements.

Meal 1: Protein

Meal 2: Protien + Carbs
Supps: 1 Thyrotab, 1 Lean Xtreme, 2 ActivaTe, 1 Twinlab Daily One

Meal 3: Protien + Fat

Meal 4: Protein + Fat
Supps: 1 Thyrotab, 1 Lean Xtreme, 2 ActivaTe

Meal 5: SizeON + Core ABC

Meal 6: Protein + Fat

Meal 7: Protein + Carbs
Supps: 1 Thyrotab, 1 Lean Xtreme, 2 ActivaTe

Meal 8: Protein + Fat

I should probably mention a lot of the carb I’m getting are from vegetable/nut sources. I am counting them in my totals. Since I am very carb sensitive I feel this approach is best for my which could quite obviously not be for you. While carbs aren’t listed with every meal there a just a few.

Meal 1 is essentially just a scoop of protein powder before cardio. Since it is a long session I do this just get something in my system to attenuate any potential catabolism that set in during the night. I really am a natural and just don’t say so to market my supplements I need to be careful about burning up too much muscle so truly fasted cardio is out of the question for me.

My new training/supplement log

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007
Introduction
Over the past few years I have grown a strong affinity towards Designer Supplements for numerous reasons. As you know, I respect science based formulation above all regardless of who markets the product and am drawn like a moth to a flame to innovation.I’ll be honest, I’ve hung out with these guys and have even gotten pretty damn wasted with them. I’ve never song a duet with a man or rapped at a Japanese restaurant until we chilled at the Arnold Classic this past March. All in all, despite some friendly disagreements or flat out battles (lmao) I do see to eye to eye with the Designer crew and have all the respect in the world for them and the vision of their product line.I decided to review the new ActivTte Xtreme and Lean Xtreme based on my confidence in Matt Cahill’s designs. I had the fortunate experience of meeting him and his wonderful wife Melissa a few weeks ago. Matt is one smart mother****er to put it bluntly and I trust his expertise as well the claims made for the products in his line.

As some of you know, I’m currently cutting to walk on stage this fall for my first natural bodybuilding show. I had a failed attempt last year after suffering a broken tailbone which greatly limited my leg training. Obviously, when making choices in supplementation at this point in my prep I’m not taking chances. I make my choices based on sound formulation and not the moronic broscience we see perpetuated daily that infests our forum community and defames the supplement industry’s image among the masses.

Fortunately, Designer Supplements has given me full reign to review this product which means I’ll be 100% honest. For some of you that know my history here, I don’t bullshit on reviews and if a product sucks or is mislabeled I’ll let it be known.

I’d like to thank both Designer Supplements and Gaspari Nutrition for sponsoring this log. I’d also like to thank Doug Miller from Core Nutritionals for granting me permission to review Core ABC as well. Just to quell any suspicions, all products were purchased by me except for those provided by Gaspari Nutrition and Designer Supplements.

Current Supplement Stack

Designer Supplements Lean Xtreme
Gaspari Nutrition Thyrotabs
Designer Supplements ActivaTe Xtreme
Twinlab Daily One without Iron
Core Nutritionals ABC (please check this out)
Gaspari Nutrition SizeON
Unique Nutrition Piracetam Powder

Diet

At present I’m following a modified carb cycling nutritional protocol. Essentially, on off days I’m eating about 2600 calories with no carbs, two days I’m eating really low carbs (120 grams) at around 3200 calories, and two moderate days (200 grams) at around 3000 calories. Yes, there is a rhyme and reason for this but unfortunately I won’t be posting the exact meal layout but will be posting my macro break down to assist any of you interested.

Here is my shopping list and the only foods I keep in my house:

Chicken
Tilapia
Eggs
Beef Tenderloin
Spinach
Broccoli
Trader Joe’s Cashew & Macadamia Nut Butter
Raw Almonds
Diet Dr. Pepper
Crystal Lite
Starbuck’s Coffee
Quaker Oats

Training Protocol

At present I am training by instinct. I don’t plan my workouts before getting to the gym and only stick to my training split. Some days you will see some heavy power lifting others you will see insane giant set shock training. I keep it loose and listen to what my body is telling me. Since recovery is limited I do what my body tells me but I assure you I am giving 110% every day.

As far as cardio is concerned, I am only doing 1 hour of brisk walking in the mornings. I might add some occasional HIT sessions post workout to up the metabolism a bit but I don’t follow anything strict. Once again, I listen to my body.

Current training split:
Day 1: ……………………………………..
…… …..Quads, hams, calves
Day 2: ……………………………………..
…… …….Chest, Triceps, Abs
Day 3: ……………………………………..
…… ………………………..Off
Day 4. ……………………………………..
…… ………….Back, Bi’s, Abs
Day 5: ……………………………………..
…… ….Quads, Hams, Calves
Day 6 : Shoulders, Upperback/Traps, Arms (3 sets each supersetted)
Day 7: ……………………………………..
…… ………………………..Off

Rules for My Log

There are none. I gladly invite anyone to ask any variety of questions because I do like these logs to be educational. You can spam, joke around, or give me advice. Just don’t be a punk.

*yes I do make my own GIFs.

Bodybuilding.com VS. The Other Guys: Webtailers With Forums

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

Being an avid poster on many forums I must say I love having my little soapbox. Having an opinion and freely being able to express before coming affiliated with a supplement company was a nice priviledge to say the least. Unfortunately, since starting with Gaspari I’ve had to keep many of my opinions to myself because some just can’t hack the debate. Essentially, we’ll get dragged into court for libel even if I’m telling the truth. While this may seem like a downer it is just the reality of the situation. Since I am limited to what I can say these days I will push on. What this means is that I’ll have to a be bit more creativee in my approach to calling it how I see it so here it goes….

I’m sure many of you out there have ventured beyond bodybuilding.com onto other forums. Have you ever noticed that some are sponsored by certain companies? This may seem cool but in all reality, you entering into a heavily censored arena of skewed discussion.Smaller companies gravitate to this mode of advertising because putting a full page ad in major monthly publication can run anywhere from about $10,000 up through about $120,000. Typically these numbers are contingent upon the circulation numbers, but eitherway, its expensive. This is why we see many companies here on bodybuilding.com that you normally don’t see in the magazines.

While some of these companies are relatively new upstarts run by ethical business men trying carve out their own niche in the industry, so others have learned with quite a bit of success how to manipulate forum culture for profit. Don’t get me wrong, its everyone’s right in our capitalist society to earn a buck, however, some of these methods we see on sponsored forums are just ridiculous and even dangerous. Just to be clear, this certainly doesn’t apply to all companies I’m implying.

Those owners and reps know who they are. I’ve witnessed companies alpha testing products without safety protocols, make up completely fabricated product claims to push sales which would put any six page advertorial to shame, obtain confidential IP information which can yield a critic’s home address and personal information, and of course, putting down places like Bodybuilding.com which essentially have no censorship to protect them. Probably the funniest act I have ever seen take place was when a company I flamed pretty bad here on Bodybuilding.com went to a different forum, posted that they needed an attorney to sue me, and then offered free supplements as payment. Talk about a joke.

Anyway, the companies shelling out $300-$2000 a month for their protected rain forest want to make sure they get their money’s worth. That’s a lot of money right? They don’t want honest discussion which could potentially put them in a deserved negative light. They don’t want to see competition who has outstanding products get any support. When tough or even elementary questions are placed upon their shoulders about their often mislabeled and illegal products they don’t want to tell the truth. Instead, because they pay to hide their dirty secrets and to ultimately earn your purchasing decisions you get forced into silence by getting banned or face an army of fanboys who are thinking “more free product” if I do what my master asks of me. So how does bodybuilding.com stack up against these guys? Admittedley, there are some loose controls on the company promotion section which I personally feel should be addressed, but all in all, its the best damn forum on the net. No other forum can a company get exposed for mislabeling, poor business practices, spiking products with ellicit substance, have their owner called a retard, or have their reps get made to look like fools because they are ill qualified to handle the tough questions. Frankly, I love this shit and wouldn’t trade it for anythingNow some of you are thinking, man the bodybuilding.com forums are full of drama. Well you are damn right they are. Its better than watching TV sometimes and I myself have starred in the following forum dramas:

One Rep To Give
As the Forum Turns
General Thread
Guiding Noobs
The Bold and the Lawsuits
Days of our Trolls
The Young and Impressionable
All My Fanboys

However, all in all, the Bodybuilding.com forums are the best of their kind to get good information, stay on track with a nice workout journal, or just get an education into how the supplement industry really works. Don’t me wrong, I wish the level of discussion was always on the same playing field as Mind & Muscle (one of the few forums with sponsored areas that I respect), but all in all, it is quite stimulating in perverse sense but often enlightening as well.

I hope some of you out there realize that all forums attached to webtailers are in some ways an extension of the marketing machine. Yes, there are people like me who are in the industry and would like to see you recommending our products but all in all, are just here to answer questions and give our educated opinion based on ingredients and formulation regardless of the company. There are also some people, from companies who I will leave nameless, who will do everything short of offering you a blow job to win your support and will flame you to no end if you disagree with their sinuous tactics .

The Bodybuilding.com forums certainly embody what makes America great. Just like our country has its share of issues so does this fast paced organic culture of misc section perverts to the MD’s & PhD’s who post regularly. Like our great country, there is no other forum I’d rather be a part of, support, and do just about anything for. Some of the other forums out there have a lot to learn. Maybe then they would they would have the heavy hitters of the industry supporting them instead of turning away in disgust.

For you consumers out there, be mindful of the environment you are posting in and receiving advice……

Training At Powerhouse with IFBB Pro Colette Nelson

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

As most of you know I was on Vacation last week in New York. This is was in essence a working vacation, if such a thing exists. Some of you are wondering if I have been training and the answer is yes. I did train the entire time I was on vacation.

One of the highlights of my trip was heading out to Long Island and having the fortunate experience of training at Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym. This place is the East Coast mecca of hardcore bodybuilding. When you enter the gym and see the all the autographed pictures and jerseys of professional bodybuilders and athletes you know you are in a serious training facility. Fortunately, Vanessa and I were lucky enough to train with IFBB women’s pro bodybuilder Colette Nelson and Billy “Guns” of Muscular Development. Honestly, I had no idea what to expert as I’ve never trained with a professional bodybuilder before but believe me this was HARCORE.

Colette called the shots as we battled our way through a fast paced chest and triceps workout. Now get this….Colette was pushing the 100lbs dumbbells just like Billy and I were. I was taken back a bit because I’ve never scene a woman lift that much but needless to say after the first set I got over it quick.

After all was said and done we chatted a bit about upcoming shows and contest prep as most of us are competing in the next year. Looking back on the experience I must say I have a lot more respect for female bodybuilders at the elite level.

Ms. Nelson is what you would call a renaissance woman in the NY bodybuilding scene helping numerous aspiring bodybuilders, both male and female reach their full potential for competitive stage. Honestly, she is a great ambassador for the sport and I’m proud to have served as her pupil for a single training session.

Next time I’m in NY I’ll be sure to give my buddies from Muscular Development a holler so they can whoop my ass once again. I swear man, my chest and triceps were beyond sore from this session. It just goes to show you even an egotistical punk like me can get put in his place every once in awhile. Don’t you get any ideas!!!!!
