Being an avid poster on many forums I must say I love having my little soapbox. Having an opinion and freely being able to express before coming affiliated with a supplement company was a nice priviledge to say the least. Unfortunately, since starting with Gaspari I’ve had to keep many of my opinions to myself because some just can’t hack the debate. Essentially, we’ll get dragged into court for libel even if I’m telling the truth. While this may seem like a downer it is just the reality of the situation. Since I am limited to what I can say these days I will push on. What this means is that I’ll have to a be bit more creativee in my approach to calling it how I see it so here it goes….
I’m sure many of you out there have ventured beyond bodybuilding.com onto other forums. Have you ever noticed that some are sponsored by certain companies? This may seem cool but in all reality, you entering into a heavily censored arena of skewed discussion.Smaller companies gravitate to this mode of advertising because putting a full page ad in major monthly publication can run anywhere from about $10,000 up through about $120,000. Typically these numbers are contingent upon the circulation numbers, but eitherway, its expensive. This is why we see many companies here on bodybuilding.com that you normally don’t see in the magazines.
While some of these companies are relatively new upstarts run by ethical business men trying carve out their own niche in the industry, so others have learned with quite a bit of success how to manipulate forum culture for profit. Don’t get me wrong, its everyone’s right in our capitalist society to earn a buck, however, some of these methods we see on sponsored forums are just ridiculous and even dangerous. Just to be clear, this certainly doesn’t apply to all companies I’m implying.
Those owners and reps know who they are. I’ve witnessed companies alpha testing products without safety protocols, make up completely fabricated product claims to push sales which would put any six page advertorial to shame, obtain confidential IP information which can yield a critic’s home address and personal information, and of course, putting down places like Bodybuilding.com which essentially have no censorship to protect them. Probably the funniest act I have ever seen take place was when a company I flamed pretty bad here on Bodybuilding.com went to a different forum, posted that they needed an attorney to sue me, and then offered free supplements as payment. Talk about a joke.
Anyway, the companies shelling out $300-$2000 a month for their protected rain forest want to make sure they get their money’s worth. That’s a lot of money right? They don’t want honest discussion which could potentially put them in a deserved negative light. They don’t want to see competition who has outstanding products get any support. When tough or even elementary questions are placed upon their shoulders about their often mislabeled and illegal products they don’t want to tell the truth. Instead, because they pay to hide their dirty secrets and to ultimately earn your purchasing decisions you get forced into silence by getting banned or face an army of fanboys who are thinking “more free product” if I do what my master asks of me. So how does bodybuilding.com stack up against these guys? Admittedley, there are some loose controls on the company promotion section which I personally feel should be addressed, but all in all, its the best damn forum on the net. No other forum can a company get exposed for mislabeling, poor business practices, spiking products with ellicit substance, have their owner called a retard, or have their reps get made to look like fools because they are ill qualified to handle the tough questions. Frankly, I love this shit and wouldn’t trade it for anythingNow some of you are thinking, man the bodybuilding.com forums are full of drama. Well you are damn right they are. Its better than watching TV sometimes and I myself have starred in the following forum dramas:
One Rep To Give
As the Forum Turns
General Thread
Guiding Noobs
The Bold and the Lawsuits
Days of our Trolls
The Young and Impressionable
All My Fanboys
However, all in all, the Bodybuilding.com forums are the best of their kind to get good information, stay on track with a nice workout journal, or just get an education into how the supplement industry really works. Don’t me wrong, I wish the level of discussion was always on the same playing field as Mind & Muscle (one of the few forums with sponsored areas that I respect), but all in all, it is quite stimulating in perverse sense but often enlightening as well.
I hope some of you out there realize that all forums attached to webtailers are in some ways an extension of the marketing machine. Yes, there are people like me who are in the industry and would like to see you recommending our products but all in all, are just here to answer questions and give our educated opinion based on ingredients and formulation regardless of the company. There are also some people, from companies who I will leave nameless, who will do everything short of offering you a blow job to win your support and will flame you to no end if you disagree with their sinuous tactics .
The Bodybuilding.com forums certainly embody what makes America great. Just like our country has its share of issues so does this fast paced organic culture of misc section perverts to the MD’s & PhD’s who post regularly. Like our great country, there is no other forum I’d rather be a part of, support, and do just about anything for. Some of the other forums out there have a lot to learn. Maybe then they would they would have the heavy hitters of the industry supporting them instead of turning away in disgust.
For you consumers out there, be mindful of the environment you are posting in and receiving advice……
