The Workout:9.5
*I’m excluding all warm up sets
Squats: 315lbs x 15, 315lbs x 15, 315lbs x 21
Front Squats: 245lbs x 10, 245lbs x 10, 245lbs x 10
Walking Barbell Lunges: 135lbs x 28 paces, 135lbs x 28 paces
Leg Extensions: 300lbs x 15, 300lbs x 15
V-Ups: 20, 20, 20 superset w/
Wood Choppers: 20 per side, 20, 20
Precor Bike: 30 minutes
While doing squats I tried slowing the tempo down and taking out the top 1/3 of the motion. Boy does that make a difference. On the last set I stopped doing that and of course banged out an extra 6 reps. It just goes to show how much applying constant tension and partial rep principles can really make a difference when used properly.
After getting off the bike my legs were engorged with blood and the most pumped I have seen them in a long time. Honestly, fatigue wasn’t a factor too much and despite dripping in sweat I felt really good and not exhausted.

Creatine + Phosphate Supplementation
In their recent book Supplements for Strength-Power Athletes, Drs. JoseAntonio and Jeffrey Stout quoted results by Dr. Wallace and colleagues published in Coaching and Sports Science Journal and unpublished results by Dr. Eckerson. Dr.Wallace and co-workers investigated the effect of supplemental creatine alone versus creatine plus phosphate on muscle power. Male and female subjects were given either five grams of creatine four times per day or five grams of creatine plusone gram of phosphate four times per day for five days. The combination of creatine plus phosphate resulted in a significantly higher muscle power output, suggesting performance benefits more from a combination of phosphates and creatine than from creatine alone.
Dr. Eckerson and colleagues examined the effects of creatine alone versuscreatine plus phosphate on anaerobic working capacity. Male subjects were randomly put into one of three treatments: placebo, five grams of creatine, or five grams of creatine plus one gram of phosphates. Each subject was asked to dissolve the supplement in 16 ounces of water and ingest it four times per day for sixconsecutive days. The subjects performed a cycle ergometry test to determineanaerobic working capacity. The placebo and creatine groups increased anaerobicworking capacity by …3.0 percent and 16.0 percent, respectively. The creatine plusphosphate group increased anaerobic working capacity by 49 percent.
Phosphate and Resting Metabolic Rate
Phosphate supplementation has also been suggested to affect energyexpenditure. For example, Dr. Kaciuba-Uscilko and colleagues reported that phosphate supplementation during a four-week weight loss program increased resting metabolic rate. Further, Dr. Nazar and co-workers reported that phosphate supplementation during an eight-week weight loss program increased restingmetabolic rate by 12-19 percent and prevented a normal decline in thyroid hormones. Consequently, it’s possible that phosphate could serve as a potentialthermogenic nutrient in diet supplements.

As we can see from this paper by Manninen creatine + phosphate has potentially to greatly effect anaerobic performance. I guess a good approach with regards to this log is to really try and focus my attention to the table listed above. While Aplodan isn’t just creatine+phosphate they do serve as the main ingredients with which to focus on in my opinion.
Using this judging criteria will better help me focus my attention. I also feel that since I do aerobic training post anearobic training that I will also be able gauge any enhancements in cardiovascular performance as well. While I won’t be pushing myself to this max while doing cardio I will pay attention to these ease at which it is performed.

Hybrid Calf Training
Precor CrossTrainer: 30 minutes
This was a fairly easy workout. I’m starting focus more on slowing the movements down and strong contractions. This makes the exercises twice as hard and why the weight may seem lighter by my standards.
Rant of the Day
I’m going to keep this brief because I am severly pissed off at the forum. Why forum members or Moderators tolerate companies like USPlabs using this forum to give testers products that are bottled wrong, mislabeled, and told they are getting one thing when it’s actually something else is beyond me. Something needs to change before USP’s greed ruins the logging process for everyone.
Here is proof of what I’m talking about. Please take notice to the spin techniques and how the thread turns into everyother company’s fault except for USP’s. This scum should no be allowed to post on the forum and those who tolerate his antics are just as bas as him. What if this was your child?
For you administrators and moderators reading this I will tell you one thing: this is why CBS is justified in their position on herbal supplements. Just like they are dispelling half-truths to the American public, you have scam artists like USPlabs giving them every reason to. Think about it…….or maybe read the FDA’s efforts to protect consumers. Why give them a reason?

When searching on the Web, try using directory sites of respected organizations, rather than doing blind searches with a search engine. Ask yourself the following questions:
Who operates the site?
Is the site run by the government, a university, or a reputable medical or health-related association (e.g., American Medical Association, American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, National Institutes of Health, National Academies of Science, or U.S. Food and Drug Administration)? Is the information written or reviewed by qualified health professionals, experts in the field, academia, government or the medical community?
What is the purpose of the site?
Is the purpose of the site to objectively educate the public or just to sell a product? Be aware of practitioners or organizations whose main interest is in marketing products, either directly or through sites with which they are linked. Commercial sites should clearly distinguish scientific information from advertisements. Most nonprofit and government sites contain no advertising; and access to the site and materials offered are usually free.
What is the source of the information and does it have any references?
Has the study been reviewed by recognized scientific experts and published in reputable peer-reviewed scientific journals, like the New England Journal of Medicine? Does the information say “some studies show:” or does it state where the study is listed so that you can check the authenticity of the references? For example, can the study be found in the National Library of Medicine’s database of literature citations (PubMed link - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/ )
Is the information current?
Check the date when the material was posted or updated. Often new research or other findings are not reflected in old material, e.g., side effects or interactions with other products or new evidence that might have changed earlier thinking. Ideally, health and medical sites should be updated frequently.
How reliable is the Internet or e-mail solicitations?
While the Internet is a rich source of health information, it is also an easy vehicle for spreading myths, hoaxes and rumors about alleged news, studies, products or findings. To avoid falling prey to such hoaxes, be skeptical and watch out for overly emphatic language with UPPERCASE LETTERS and lots of exclamation points!!!! Beware of such phrases such as: “This is not a hoax” or “Send this to everyone you know.”
Ask yourself: Does it sound too good to be true?
Do the claims for the product seem exaggerated or unrealistic? Are there simplistic conclusions being drawn from a complex study to sell a product? While the Web can be a valuable source of accurate, reliable information, it also has a wealth of misinformation that may not be obvious. Learn to distinguish hype from evidence-based science. Nonsensical lingo can sound very convincing. Also, be skeptical about anecdotal information from persons who have no formal training in nutrition or botanicals, or from personal testimonials (e.g. from store employees, friends, or online chat rooms and message boards) about incredible benefits or results obtained from using a product. Question these people on their training and knowledge in nutrition or medicine.
Think twice about chasing the latest headline.
Sound health advice is generally based on a body of research, not a single study. Be wary of results claiming a “quick fix” that depart from previous research and scientific beliefs. Keep in mind science does not proceed by dramatic breakthroughs, but by taking many small steps, slowly building towards a consensus. Furthermore, news stories, about the latest scientific study, especially those on TV or radio, are often too brief to include important details that may apply to you or allow you to make an informed decision.
Check your assumptions about the following:
#1 Questionable Assumption …
“Even if a product may not help me, it at least won’t hurt me.” It’s best not to assume that this will always be true. When consumed in high enough amounts, for a long enough time, or in combination with certain other substances, all chemicals can be toxic, including nutrients, plant
components, and other biologically active ingredients.
#2 Questionable Assumption …
“When I see the term ‘natural,’ it means that a product is healthful and safe.” Consumers can be misled if they assume this term assures wholesomeness, or that these food-like substances necessarily have milder effects, which makes them safer to use than drugs. The term “natural” on labels is not well defined and is sometimes used ambiguously to imply unsubstantiated benefits or safety. For example, many weight-loss products claim to be “natural” or “herbal” but this doesn’t necessarily make them safe. Their ingredients may interact with drugs or may be dangerous for people with certain medical conditions.
#3 Questionable Assumption …
” A product is safe when there is no cautionary information on the product label.” Dietary supplement manufacturers may not necessarily include warnings about potential adverse effects on the labels of their products. If consumers want to know about the safety of a specific dietary supplement, they should contact the manufacturer of that brand directly. It is the manufacturer’s responsibility to determine that the supplement it produces or distributes is safe and that there is substantiated evidence that the label claims are truthful and not misleading.
#4 Questionable Assumption …
” A recall of a harmful product guarantees that all such harmful products will be immediately and completely removed from the marketplace.” A product recall of a dietary supplement is voluntary and while many manufacturers do their best, a recall does not necessarily remove all harmful products from the marketplace.

There is nothing to really report as far as the Aplodan is concerned. I did have a good workout but that was primarily due to the fact I have taken it easy for the past week and half. I’ve only been going about 50% of my maximums just to give my body a rest.
It was nice to push some moderate weight though. If you haven’t noticed, I did lower the volume a bit. We’ll see how this goes and it is hard for me to adjust. However, I do have faith in Eric’s methods and will begin to adhere to them a little more closely, but still keeping my own methods in mind as well.
One bit of good news is that my gym just opened a new level. This just about doubles it’s size and opens up a lot of much needed space. Some of the new equipment being added includes a hack squat (about time), Free Motion equipment, new dumbell sets up to 150lbs, and a standing single leg hamstring curl. I’m excited to see how my legs respond to a hacksquat because the only time I use one is when I’m traveling. It will be nice.
In case you are wondering, I did make that banner. It wasn’t provided for me for all you lurkers wondering if I work for MuscleTech. I don’t…okay?

For anyone who lives the fitness lifestyle it’s often never an issue prepping meals and going to the gym. You do it like clockwork and never think twice about manipulating your schedule whenever possible to meet these demands. Unfortunately, a lot of us have a tendency to overtrain, not get enough rest, or to sum it up, not recover properly.
As a natural athlete, finding this balance has been a challenge but experience as of late has been on my side. Getting enough sleep usually isn’t problem for me because I don’t have kids, am not married, and can take a nap whenever I please outside of work. Overtraining has been an issue but I remedied that I by lowering my volume and have learned that going to failure is never really necessary to induce hypertrophy. Stimulating the muscle is what’s important: not killing it.

So what’s left? It seems most of the pieces are in place but what else can I do to enhance my recovery? How about therapeutic massage?
I’ve been attending deep tissue, trigger point, and Swedish massage sessions for about two years now. Every two weeks I’ll use one of my off days and pay a visit to my massage therapist Greg who works out of my gym.
My therapist: Greg the Great!

Now right off the bat some of you younger guys are wondering I would want to have a dude rub me up and down for three hours a month. The simple answer is that I need someone with a lot of strength to effectively deliver deep tissue techniques (get your mind out of the gutter!). Also, as great as it is to get a massage from a beautful woman there is nothing worse than sprouting wood with no happy ending. Man hands just don’t do it for me.

Now I know some of you Jay Cutler fans have seen him enduring some fairly painful massage sessions in his videos and the same goes for me. These can be extremely painful especially if you are sore or have some muscle which hard to cause a release. The reason why myself and bodybuilders like Jay endure such pain is for the mere fact massage helps increase blood flow within the muscle, causes enhanced myofascial flexibility, lengthens muscle tissues, enhances lymphatic function, and promotes toxin removal. That’s quite the list of benefits now isn’t it?

Anecdotally, since I’ve begun massage I have noticed a few areas which were hard to develop are now really coming into their own. Both my triceps and lat sweep were always a weakness of mine. No matter what strategy I imposed on them getting good blood flow (and pump) and growth was always hard. Once I explained my issue with my therapist he focused his attention these areas and almost instantly I noticed increased size and sweep. Ever notice the improvements in Cutler’s back sweep as well?

With that said, I’m a firm believer in the power of therapeutic massage. Granted, getting some chocolate flavored massage oil, incense, and Sade always makes for a good night with the girlfriend, but nevertheless, I recommend a professional massage. Erotic massage will be left for another blog entry but I will say Kamasutra makes some great oils.

I’m very excited about my upcoming trip to the Arnold Classic this coming March in Columbus, Ohio. Believe it or not, I have never been to a single bodybuilding expo or competition for that matter. So this year will be a lot of “firsts” for me in the sport of bodybuilding and the supplement industry as well. Who would have known Arnold Schwarzenegger would have gove from this:
to this:
Back to the topic at hand….
What’s truly funny about this scenario is that I talk to people in the industry almost daily. I’m lucky enought to have been noticed on the forums by numerous representatives and owners. Because of this I have built some fairly strong friendships and it is quite exciting to meet all of these great people face to face. So what company affiliates am I looking forward to meeting?Designer Supplements: Steve, Mike, and Rob are some of the greatest guys I have come into contact with on the forum. I’ve always enjoyed our conversations, banter, even spats. I hope they ALL know I have nothing but respect for them and truly look forward to meeting their aquaintance. They make some of the most innovative products out their and have the best tasting peanut butter fudge protein powder I have ever tasted, Sustain.Scivation: Marc, Derek, and Layne are real deal bodybuilders and put out some great products. I bust their balls ALOT but they know I’ve got nothing but respect for them (I hope). Eitherway, this crew brings out the best when it comes to real bodybuilders formulating supplements for bodybuilders.
Thermolife: In case you didn’t know I am dating a company representative from here, DVSNESS. She fits in quite well with this coloful crew. BothRon and Armando are two of my favorite people on and off the forum. I have had many conversation with these guys and we see eye to eye on many issues involving responsibility in the industry. I feel lucky to have “met” these two through the forums and look forward to hanging out with them and causing trouble. WATCH OUT! It is dissappointing though that they won’t have the body painted models at this expo. I guess it’s a a little too risque…but man THEY would fun to look at. Don’t you agree?

MAN Sports: I’ve only used on product by this company but I must say it rocks. With that said, I’ve had the pleasure of of chatting with both Joey and Shawn online in the ThermoChat. These two guys bring out the best in the industry and Shawn is one of the brigthest folks I have come into contact here thus far. Hopefully they will have some Scorch and Octane on sale so I can stock up for my upcoming cut in April.
Gaspari Nutrition International: Both Bruce and Joe are very down to earth guys and have great senses of humour. I know Bruce won’t be able to make it but Joe will. I’m looking forward to furthering our great relationship, picking up a bunch of samples of their new fat burner/stim product, and hopefully meeting the legend himself, Rich Gaspari. He is where I’d like to be in twenty years.
Bodybuilding.com: Without these guys I would not be the bodybuilder I am today. I know that seems odd, but bodybuilding.com has pretty much taught me everything I know about the sport. Their vast library of articles and fast paced forums have given me invaluble insight into both the sport and industry I have come to love so much. I know the Delucas will be there so hopefully I get a chance to say thanks.
I also heard Rich the BodySpace administrator won’t be there. What’s up with that? I know he’s not as cool as me but I think we can bend the rules for him. DVSNESS would like to meet him as well.
MuscleTech: Eric seems like a personable fellow and is always open to new ideas. We have had only brief e-mail contact but all in all I’d like to thank him for having an open mind about getting some forum members to review their products. Not to kiss my own ass, but the forum is a lot more open to MuscleTech products due to some of my insight and I’m glad they are finally getting some of the recognition they deserve. Even moreso, it’s nice to get a call from Mr. Olmpia himself thanking me for support as well. All in all they are a class act and why they have such great success. Even Arnold himself like CellTech!!!

So there’s a quick summary of what companies I’d like to grab ass with at the Arnold expo. I know I didn’t mention a few like ALRI and Molecular, but frankly I’m just tired of typing right now. Checkback in the coming weeks as I talk about what bodybuilders I want to meet, my top ten competitor list, what forum moderators I’d like to meet and hand some Advil for my forum antics, and best of all, a review of the weekend itself full of pictures. Till then…..CIAO!

Finding the perfect muscle building agent has long been a goal of numerous researchers for obvious reasons. In 1997, researchers at Johns Hopkins University discovered a powerful skeletal muscle regulator called myostatin and the genes which it controls. As a result mutant mice and cattle were produced which lacked the myostatin expressing gene which almost doubled their muscle mass.
This has since sparked numerous studies and resulted in at present 28 patents approved by the USPTO for future application. Even more interesting is that Abbott Laboratories owns a patent as well (Myostatin gene promoter and inhibition of activation thereof: US Patent 6,284,882). However, I don’t think EAS (a subsidiary of Abbott) will be putting this out anytime soon. Any supplement at present which claims myostatin inhibition is a complete scam. Caveat emptor!

As far as I can tell there has been at least one phase I/II clinical trial complete on humans (http://clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT00104078). The applications of this for muscle wasting diseases, ALS, sarcopenia, etc is limitless. While finding the exact outcome of this study has been fruitless. Harnessing this power, on the surface at least seems hard to tame.

From what I have read about myostatin inhibition could possibly have negative effects on smooth muscle tissue in theory and levels of adipose tissue. Some research seems to avoid this little caveat for good reason: who wants to f*ck with their heart negatively. Also, while a decrease in adiposity seems welcome by todays standards, I don’t believe having virtually no fat is healthy either. Furthermore, enlarged hearts are nothing to overlook.
Conversley, there was a study done a on young male who had a complete deacitivation of the myostatin gene. It has been observed that he does not have any cardiomyopathy as of yet but he is still to young to determine it won’t be a factor. Also, members of his family appear to have mutations of gene leaving it active but suppressed. They report some above average strength but keep in mind this is a very isolated sample pool. Here is a picture of his lower extremity at seven months.

Researchers have actually looked into genetic mutations which cause the myostatin gene to suppressed or completely shut down. Flex Wheeler was actually part of a study conducted at the University of Pittsburgh which actually showed he had a rare mutation of this gene (exon 2 position) along with a mutation in one of the genes responsible for IGF-1. Flex also had a genetic defect in his kidneys by some accounts or was it the furosemide which lead to their failure and subsequent transplant. Who knows? He was the man by all accounts.

Obviously, this does have applications in sports performance but I haven’t heard of any mainstream “gear” which utilizes this. I don’t know how hard it would be to develop something which limits myostatin expression by causing a competition for the activin receptor IIB but it could be possible I guess. It also might be possible to increase levels of follastatin or myostatin propeptide which have also shown to inhibit myostatin by binding to it before it dimerizes to form mature myostatin and binds to the activin receptor IIB. This would cause less expression which would halt gene transcription and the signal cascade. These are the claims of some of the patents and research out therr but no actual application used in humans have been reported to the public except for the aforementioned clinical trial
So who’s going to do it first? I guess we’ll see. You will be seeing this in future bodybuilding gear arsenals in the near future. The patents are out there, the technology is available, and it’s just a matter of time when their is a synergy between some eager chemist with right equipment to pull this off. Most likely it will make an appearance in professional sports before it hits the bodybuilding scene. This will make AAS and PH’s look like cotton candy.

As you can tell, I just finished a 60 day trial of both Gaspari SizeON and IntraPro. I must say that I was very impressed with these products which will definately be evident by the final reviews I am working on at present. During the time of this logging effort I put my body through some tortuous workout sessions utilizing Power/ Rep Range/ Shock training which was developed by Eric Broser. However, for now I’m chilling out a bit.

You have probably also noticed I haven’t been posting my workouts for the past week. Basically, I’m taking a few days off to let my body recover a bit. I’m still going to the gym, but am only getting the blood flowing and doing some light cardio. Active recovery is one of the most overlooked and underutilized tools any natural bodybuilder can use. In essense, this allows your body to fully heal which is obviously a HUGE part of the growth process. When I return to my full training schedule I will be using a different set of supplements.
As always, I’m looking for new avenues to further my performance capabilies to better enhance my physique. Fortunately, I have been contacted by MuscleTech again to do another review and log of yet another novel supplement of theirs. This time around I will be using a well researched but little known compound to the bodybuilding community called Aplodan.
Now I know a lot of you are wondering why the hell MuscleTech picks such wierd supplement names as of late. Believe it or not they are just based on the actual compound names contained within the ingredient profile (i.e. GAKIC = glycine-arginine-alpha-ketoisocaproic acid). Aplodan was actually first given it’s name by Italian researchers using the compound called in Italian, creatinolo fosfato. In english, this is creatinol-o-phosphate which also has the chemical nomenclature or 2-(carbamimidoyl-methyl-amino)ethoxyphosphon ic acid.

Given the amount of published research on this compound I am really looking forward to adding it to my supplement arsenal. This advanced form of creatine utilizing phosphates is supposed to serve an H+ blocker of sorts. Essentially, by decreases fatigue factors it will allow you to better stimulate your muscles by actualizing ALL the muscle fibers giving rise to the following claim by MuscleTech:
“Trigger Dormant Muscle Activation
In every bundle of muscle fibers within your body, you have several clusters of muscle fibers that are dormant, and don’t materially function or contribute to improving muscle size. During a typical workout, you never actually stress you muscles enough to trigger growth in these dormant muscle fibers. But now, after utilizing years of research including clinical research at the University of Milan, Team MuscleTech© has engineered Aplodan - the world’s first and only dormant muscle fiber activator that allows you to increase muscle fiber activation by an average of 83%! It’s the key to unlocking the potential for new muscle that’s been locked away in your body for years!”

I guess the proof will be in the pudding so hopefully Aplodan will live up to it’s claims. Needless to say, I’m always excited to try new supplements with strong research supporting them. As always, I’ll be sure to post my daily observations and some more advanced information as well about the actual individual ingredients used. Hopefully I can return to some of the glory of my youth because bulking takes a toll on you. All sarcasm aside, I’d like to thank MuscleTech for this opportunity. They know I’m a super guy…here’s the proof.

Being a man I must first state that I LOVE the opposite sex. There is nothing more I appreciate and am thankful for than women. I was brought into this glorious existance by one, have laughed and cried, learned love and compassion, write and wrong, all because of women. However, one of the things I’m most thankful for is SEX. Yeah I said it, I like sex.

Now I know some of you out there have probably read through this blog and think I’m just an opinionated ******* or some sort of egotistical pig with an above average physique and you are probably right. But what makes sex enjoyable and I’m not afraid to say it is the female vagina. This wonderful creation from a higher power we will never have the capability to comprehend is the reason why love is blind. It is why a man will do or say just about anything to have an experience with a vagina. This anatomical feature is why prostitution is the oldest business practice since the dawn of modern man. More importantly, this is the greatest present you can give to any man.

Now yes, I have heard that some brothels give out gift certificates and there is the ever timeless blow up doll. However, some of you ladies reading this might not be able to go the extra mile for your man and give him what he wanted for the holidays. However, Im about to give the greatest gift recommendation of all. It’s your box in a box.
Yes ladies, your box makes a wonderful gift your man can cherish anytime of the day rain or shine, but obviously not anytime of the month. I guarantee that once he opens that box and sees your box his jaw will drop and you will see right before your eyes his little man come to attention.
Now don’t thank me yet because after all, putting your box in a box is no easy task. I’d demonstrate it for you, but I can only stick my dick in a box which might be too graphic for our hosts here BodyBuilding.com although Rich might enjoy it . Here is a great video to help all you wonderful women out there give the greatest gift of all. It’s as American as warm apple pie!

I realize I am fighting an uphill battle by making this statement but I would like to ask for your objective opinion on the matter at hand. I’m not anti-supplement industry nor am I against forum members receiving free products to log, from various promotions, getting free samples, or being rewarded for playing an active role on this forum. When companies who conduct themselves responsibly whether they be or small or large I will gladly support their efforts on this forum and elsewhere.
We have seen a number of promotions on this forum as of late which completely go against the efforts responsible companies make. Now for all intensive purposes I should first define irresponsibility before I continue:
1.Mislabeling products and using unknown extractions that aren’t listed nor follow FDA labeling guidelines: http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/ds-labl.html2. Claiming products are trademarked when they are not: http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?…ate=c9b6sr.1.1
3. Recommending products or offering medical advice to people who state they have a medical condition when they should clearly be told to seek advice from a licensed medical doctor.
4. Not requiring someone to provide their age when “gifting products.
5. Stating supplement write-ups, FAQs, patent application exist or will be made available and never appear. Also, not having ANY information about their supplement, ingredients, etc listed on their commercial website they distribute through. Existing patent and published patent application searches can be conducted here: http://www.uspto.gov/patft/index.html
6. Seeking alpha and beta testers for soon to be released products without informing them of the real ingredients, not labeling the product in a manner which follows nutritional labeling guidelines, not stating what specific doses should be used, and not requiring ANY proof of age, identity, etc.
I must also state a bit further that while numerous companies in the industry are guilty of this bad behaviour, the companies which use the forum and are guilty of the aforementioned actions are the one which should be addressed. They are the ones “gifting on this forum.
Now for some, it may appear that I’m just ranting, actively pursuing a vendetta, or acting as the forum cop. You are entitled to your opinion so feel free to offer your opinion on the matter at hand.
My reasoning in posting this is for one reason only: this forum should not be launching pad for irresponsibility in the supplement industry. If you have paid attention to the national press or the efforts by pharmaceutical lobbyists to influence Washington you would realize the supplement industry is on the chopping block. While some of you are quick to judge these organization you don’t realize your “voice is muted by the irresponsibility displayed by these smaller companies trying to get a piece of the multibillion dollar supplement industry.
While I applaude the efforts of smaller companies using an honest grass roots approach to building their business, I cannot sit idely by while others rot the already shaken foundation of the industry. It is this irresponsibity which draws fire by the media and legislative branch of government. Are you aware of the current bill just became law on Dec. 22, 2006 which was a huge blow to responsible supplement marketers? If not here you go:
S. 3546[109]: Dietary Supplement and Nonprescription Drug Consumer Protection Act
“A bill to amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act with respect to serious adverse event reporting for dietary supplements and nonprescription drugs, and for other purposes.
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill…bill=s109-3546
Even worse, major medical journals publish numerous case studies which give a strong basis as to why academia looks down upon the supplement industry as well. This is why your family physician won’t support your use of supplements. Here’s some further reading which is what they base their opinions on just for starters:
Reporting associations between dietary supplements and adverse events. Mayo Clin Proc. 2006 Dec;81(12):1636Variant angina associated with bitter orange in a dietary supplement. Mayo Clin Proc. 2006 Apr;81(4):545-8
Cholestatic jaundice and IgA nephropathy induced by OTC muscle building agent superdrol. Am J Gastroenterol. 2006 Nov;101(11):2659-62. Epub 2006 Sep 4
Rhabdomyolysis and acute renal failure following arthroscopic knee surgery in a college football player taking creatine supplements. Clin Nephrol. 2006 Feb;65(2):134-7.
Renal failure and exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis in patients taking performance-enhancing compounds. J Trauma. 2002 Oct;53(4):761-3; discussion 763-4.
As you can plainly see, this industry is under a microscope and can ill afford ANY more bad press, or even worse someone reporting an adverse reaction to some unknown compound or extract. Since everything from PH’s to vitamin C are looked upon as potentially dangerous given the fact Mr. John Q Public doesn’t know the first thing about supplements.
It is this ignorance which allows the anti-supplement movement to thrive and gain momentum ever since the ephedra class action lawsuits in the beginning of this decade. Most of you are too young to remember but for those of us who have been around a while certainly remember when proper warnings are not put into place on our dietary supplements: we lose the right have them. I miss ephedra, don’t you? Can’t we learn from the mistakes of the past?
With that said, what we have seen on this forum is just one facet of irresponsibility rotting the industry. Certain companies who blind you with free product are direct contributors to the anti-supplement movement with their irresponsible actions we see displayed here everyday. Are free supplements from companies who are irresponsible and a stain on the whole industry that important to you?
If it is, I hope you use them as responsibly as you can. Hopefully, you have a great enough understanding of what you are about to injest despite the fact it doesn’t have it’s constituents labeled or presented properly. Hopefully, you can trust what is being sent to you for the sake of free marketing. Lastly, I certainly hope if get sick and have to see a doctor you don’t mention you received this product through the bodybuilding.com forums. Can you imagine how the Amy Shipley’s of the world could spin that in the national media? I can.
