Don Ross Droppin’ The Heavy Wood
I became of Don Ross about five years ago when I was still an undergraduate in college. I had come home for Winter Break and my best friend Max had this new CD we raving about. I said let’s here it and from the first few bars played I knew was an artist I was going to love. The song I heard was Michael, Michael, Michael.
As you can see from the video Ross plays a very unique style of guitar. Not only is he finger picking, but he also using some pretty advanced percussive slap techniques. This adds some “beat to the song. Also, you notice him tapping and utilizing some of these slap techniques to brink out some natural harmonics over the seventh and twelth frets.

What truly stands Ross out from a lot of other master guitarists is his command of alternate tunings. A standard guitar tuning is E A B D G E and in the song you are about to here Ross uses a C G C G Bb C. I myself have toyed with some tuning like this and must say it’s sounds beautiful but certainly not easy to play. Anyway, here is the song Michael, Michael, Michael.

The altered tuning he uses for this song is played with a Baritone guitar.
That might explain why you were finding it difficult to play…
