Day 46: POWER QUAD TRAINING - Dec. 23, 2006

Sunday, December 24th, 2006

The Workout: 9.8

Barbell Walking Lunges: 185lbs x 20 paces, 185lbs x 20 paces

Squats: 545lbs x 4 (PR), 545lbs x 4, 545lbs x 3

Leg Extensions: 300lbs x 20, 300lbs x 18

Leg Press (Feet together low foot placement): 1080 x 8, 1080 x 8

Decline Sit Ups: 20, 20, 20 superset w/

Wood Choppers: 10lbs x 20/20, 10lbs x 20/20, 10lbs x 20/20

Precor CrossTrainer: 50 minutes

Thoughts

545lbs on the squats is personal best. I once 555lbs x 1 once back in the day but I have to admit these on 545lbs were deep and impressive. FINALLY, it appears my legs are getting back to their old grandeur of actually being my strongest bodypart from an aesthetic and strength perspective.

Needless to say, I should probably start doing my single leg extensions because the full stack at my gym is getting to easy. I guess I could have more troubling issues to deal with in my life so I’ll end my whining here (for now).

I’m looking forward to traveling home this week. There is a new Gold’s Gym near my house and it is the best gym I have ever been to. It has all new equipment, any possible machine, and few NPC competitors that I can train with who are friends and make me look like a bitch in the gym. I need more of that.

Later in the week I get to train with DVSNESS at Gold’s in downtown DC. It’s always a blast training with her because despite being tiny she can hang with guys like myself. She is probably the best student I have ever trained and is a sponge for knowledge when it comes to more advanced methods. I can’t wait.

Who’s in Your Advertisement?

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

Nowadays when you pick up any muscle magazine you are bombarded with before and after pictures utilized to showcase various supplements. This trend is generally accepted by most avid readers because you become immune to them. However, one really stuck out in my mind.SANN Tight is great product in both the pill and RTD form. I’ve tried the RTD actually and must say it is quite an effective product. As much as like SANN products I was certainly disturbed by an ad which used the before and after photos of 19 year old Steve Shobert.

For anyone who has cut for a competition can attest, getting this lean is very hard and comendable. However, Mr. Shobert seems to have taken this a bit too far by losing quite a bit of muscle which makes him look grossly emaciated. Another thing Mr. Shobert lost was any credibility as of late after a few companies have since come forth on the forums here that he indeed sent them the same pictures claiming he used their supplements as well to cut the fat.

http://www.forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=993606

Representatives from both Gaspari Nutrition and Designer Supplements have recently come forward and said the Mr. Shobert also sent them the same pictures in the hopes of being featured in their advertisements in various supplement industry publications. Even worse, in every communication he claimed he used their supplements to get that great 4% bodyfat look most people are striving for. Talk about busted.

I don’t think we’ll be seeing poor Mr. Shobert in any advertisements again in the coming future. For you supplement companies out there I would hope that there is some way to verify whether or not the the aspiring fitness athletes in your ads actually use your products. Regardless, it’s funny as shit when something like this is brought to light and I got a good laugh. Thank you Mr. Shobert and SANN!

Day 44: POWER Back Training - Dec. 20, 2006

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

The Workout: 9.5 out of 10

***I’m excluding all warm-up sets***

Neutral Grip Pull Down: 220lbs x 8, 220lbs x 8

Deadlifts: 455lbs x 3, 455lbs x 3 (PR )

Low Cable Rows: 250lbs x 6, 250lbs x 6

Dumbell Rows: 130lb’ers x 6, 130lb’ers x 6

Precor CrossTrainer: 35 minutes

Thoughts

About four year ago I seriously injured my back deadlifting (max was 405lbs). As a result I have really strayed from doing full range deads because the injury happened at the lowest point in the movement. Nn all honesty I have been pretty scared ever since.

I knew from the last time I did heavy deadlifts in which I matched my own personal record that the health of my back has come a long way since I injured it. Pulling 405lbs didn’t seem too hard and is why I had the confidence to try 455lbs today. I still feel I can tack on a few more pounds but am playing it safe.

This might not seem like a lot of weight but for about three years deadlifting anything over 225lbs just killed my lower back. It has been a slow process getting my numbers back up and I’m proud to say I think I can break 500lbs in the coming months. Stay tuned.

I GUESS MY BLOG ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH….

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

I must say that I’m a little dissappointed to see my blog removed from the “Featured” list on the main BodyBlog page. Granted it does make sense to keep blogs which haven’t been updated in over a month to give proper credit where it’s due. I guess I’m just being a bitch about it and whining EH?

Believe it or not, I don’t work for any supplement company and do on occassion get contacted to test things out. I only agree to a small percentage of the offers I receive and of that small percentage only a handful of supplements ever actually get a nice cited review to ellucidate their efficacy. Whether I do or don’t I am never compensated and truly do this out of an active interest in bodybuilding supplementation. It’s my way of serving our country or at least the bodybuilding.com community.

To me, providing a more structured perspective on great products gives the industry as a whole more of a leg to stand on. Over the past few years it has suffered some serious black eyes with the ephedra class action lawsuits and more recently the prohormone ban. Sadly enough, more and more companies are still provoking FDA sanctions by continually releasing products which are unsafe and even worse just steroid analogues.

The industry as whole needs to focus on making products which have actual peer reviewed evidence to back their efficacy. I know a few companies are taking the proper steps to have their products go through small clinical trials which can be costly to them. However, in the long run this step in the right direction will give the industry the legitimacy it greatly needs and for that I would like to thank EAS, MuscleTech, and Gaspari Nutrition for making these great strides.

Now I realize I’m only one man. My little soapbox here on BodySpace isn’t going to stop the small garage based scam artists or the new shell company from being started to protect larger companies trying to evade FDA suspicions However, I would hope in some ways that argueably the best Body Blog on this site would not be put behind those who don’t even use theirs. Perhaps I’ll change my profile picture to me oiled up and naked with a santa hat covering my johnson like all the other attention whores who contribute NOTHING to BodySpace, the forums, or the community here at large.

Craig Titus Update Not for the Faint at Heart

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

As most of you probably know IFBB Pro Craig Titus has been locked up in Las Vegas on murder charges for quite a few months. In that time, he has also been charged with multiple counts of conspirtacy to commit murder, cell vandalism, and now a recent Las Vegas Review Journal article states, sheriffs were fearing he might make an escape attempt.

“A newly released jail video shows bodybuilder Craig Titus being removed from his cell at the Clark County Detention Center and strapped to a chair with a pair of goggles placed over his eyes as part of a high-security escape investigation.”

Here is the link to the videos showing the cell removal and I must warn you that these are quite disturbing to say the least:

Magnesium Creatine Chelate = Great Creatine Blend Ingredient

Monday, December 18th, 2006

As an avid supplement user I have found creatine blends to be superior in a lot of ways to a single source of creatine. While most contempory forms are designed for new avenues of marteting (i.e. Creatine ethyl ester) one has really shined through and has a lot of potential as an ingredient to creatine blends.

Albion Advanced Nutrition has invented a form a of creatine called creatine magnesium chelate which is protected under US Patent #6,114,379. What is novel about this form of creatine is that it actually is absorbed by a completely different channel.

Creatine magnesium chelate in theory is supposed to allow the creatine molecule to be absorbed into the muscle via the ligand-gated cation channel. Normally, creatine enters the cell via a sodium-dependent transporter and if this new pathway is more efficient because it only allows cations through then creatine magnesium chelate could quite possibly be a more effective ergogenic aide. Unfortunately, it has been found that there is no evidence showing that creatine magnesium chelate enhances physical performance with respect to creatine monohydrate, thus the secondary transport pathway is not more efficient but still works nonetheless (Selsby JT 2004).

What I find funny is that some companies have been using also touting that creatine magnesium chelate (magnesium creatine chelate, MCC, etc) is superior based on a study which compared magnesium oxide creatine to creatine magnesium chelate (Brilla LR 2003). The creatine magnesium chelate group showed greater power output due to greater cellular hydration compared not to creatine monohydrate, but only to an inferior magnesium oxide creatine control group. It just goes to show that you should actually read studies before you believe what some companies like to cite as supporting evidence.

Personally, I’m not saying the creatine magnesium chelate is inferior by any means. It is absorbed by a secondary pathway which could be interpreted as that when stacked with creatine monohydrate you have a greater total uptake in creatine via dual pathways. Since there are only two studies in humans (both on college aged males) the jury is still out on creatine magnesium chelate’s revolutionary stigma some companies would like you to believe as being a superior form of creatine. However, it is revolutionary nonetheless and can be found in the following products:

Controlled Labs Green Magnitude

Millenium Sports Technologies Ragnarok

Myogenix Aftershock
