Changing your holiday thinking

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

When I was gorowing up, the holiday season was full of warmth, happiness, Christmas trees and crackling fireplaces. But the thing I remember most about the holidays was… the carbs!!!! Cookies and bars, fudge and pie! Its hard to think about going into the holidays without those things. However, I recently had a realization…

I have been planning on having a holiday open house this year to get my friends together one last time before they all take off to see family for Christmas, and all I could think of was the bounty of cookies I would make– how much sugar and white fllour I would have to buy and EAT! And all I could think was… I don’t want this. I don’t want to sit at home all day surrounded by baked goods that will completely destroy my efforts. I put so much time and energy into my workouts and meals, and I don’t want to create an opportunity to set myself back with my fitness goals.

I initially thought an open house would be a great way to start a new tradition for our family, but I told my husband last night that really, I think i am challenged to think about the holidays without all the food, but maybe that is part of growing up. Part of creating traditions is doing things that are congruent with what we believe is good and fun. So, maybe my tradition will be to go see bell-ringers or carolers, or something that will not make us part of the holiday 10-lb weight gain.

Of course DH, who will take a hot wife over a wife who bakes any day of the week, was supportive to cancel the party and find an alternative. So, what are some non-food things that you are all doing over the holiday season???? I’d love feedback on this one!!!

Have a great day everyone!

Shannan’s Oatmeal Lemon Pancakes

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Hi All,

If you haven’t checked out the bodyspace for shannan– do it! She has some great tips and recipes. One recipe I tried this weekend was for her oatmeal lemon pancakes. I made mine oatmeal lemon blueberry and they were awesome.  I swapped the smart balance for coconut oil, which makes the kitchen smell amazing, but do what you like.

Oatmeal Lemon Pancakes

4 large egg whites

3/4 cup non fat cottage cheese (I blended it in the food processor first)

1/2 cup oats, finely ground

1 scoop vanilla protein powder

2 tbsp smart balance butter (I used 1 T. of coconut oil instead)

1 cup splenda

Zest of Lemon

1/2 tsp vanilla

**sugar free syrup (optional)

1 c. blueberries (optional)

-In a large bowl, beat egg whites. Add remainng ingredients and mix until smooth.

-Heat a large skillet or griddle and coat lightly with cooking spray. When hot, scoop about 3 tablespoons of batter per pancake and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side, until golden grown on both sides. Enjoy

-add sugar free syrup on top if desire.

Wedding next Friday equals 2-a-day workouts

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

My good friends are getting married next Friday. And despite the fact that I’ve talked a lot about dieting down for their wedding, for some reason my head has just not been in the game. So, I am officially on, on, ON with the 2-a-day workouts until the 13th. I have a trip to New Orleans the following week, so there is no time to screw around.

My plan is my bodyweight x10 for my calories + 1g protein per pound of body weight. The rest of my calories will be from clean foods– mostly healthy fats and carbs. I am ready to kill it!!!!!!

I passed the potluck test

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Today we had a HUGE potluck at work. After much deliberation on what to bring (giant salad, which went like crazy- just sayin’), I had the hideous opportunity to be tempted beyond belief. Here’s the great thing, though… I wasn’t tempted AT ALL! I got some salad, raw veggies and a tiny scoop of some chicken taco salad. I sipped on my diet soda, talked with my colleagues, and went back to my desk and had a shake- yeah me!

And, despite the fact that there were desserts galore everywhere today (even 2 pieces of cake and 2 cookies left on my desk) I tossed it all in the trash with ease. I didn’t even want it! Double yeah! It’s amazing how really putting out the effort for this lifestyle and knowing how certain foods effect my body help me to make such better decisions for myself!

Get these candy corns away from me….

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Over the years I have found that I am generally not so tempted by Halloween candy. I was working as a personal trainer last year, so keeping away from the sugar was a cinch. Well, now that I am working back in a corporate environment, I have a jar full of Peanut M&Ms at my availability all the time, and my favorite fro yo joint started carrying candy corns for Halloween. Ugh! I totally over-loaded and now I just want to leave the whole sugar fiasco behind me, and get my tight body back.

I think the way that I stay on-track best is to do my weekly pics at home and stay and post them here. So, get ready because on Saturday they are comin!!!!

Have a great day everyone!

Rocky Start to the Day- Ugh!

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

I was planning on having a rest day today, but when my alarm went off at 4am I jumped out of bed and my upper-body felt like it could use some work. So, I get up, pack my gym bag, and 15 minute before I am supposed to be at the gym, DH asks if we can go to the gym at his base so I can give him a ride to work. OK- I can do this. I frantically cram all of my things into my bag and tell him we have to hurry because his gym is further from mine and I MUST start my WO at 5am or I will be late for work.

We get to the gym at 5:15, and even though I cut my workout down, I didn’t finish till 5:45, and then I had to shower, and get ready for work. So, I hurried my a$$ off and still had no time to dry my hair. So, I leave the gym, makeup on, clothes on, and hair looks like a rats nest. I was swearing and fuming all the way to work because what I should have said was- drive yourself today because if I’m late its really gonna’ screw up my mojo.

I got to work and pulled my hair in a pony tail and am now trying to just breathe and be happy I got my workout in– even though my hair looks like crap.

Need ideas for BB-friendly potluck items…

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

So here’s the deal. We have a potluck for Halloween at work on Friday and I don’t know what to bring. Looks like a ton of desserts on the list, and I want to bring something that will not blow my diet– so think lean protein, healthy fats, and veggies. I get to work at 6am and do not have an oven at the office, so I have to bring something that can be heated in the microwave, or just ready to go.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!

Pumpkin Pie Protein Shake

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Hey Everyone,

Since we are entering the holiday season, I am revamping my protein shakes to embrace the flavors of fall. One of the things I like to make is a pumpkin pie protein shake, but I haven’t got it down pat yet. Don’t get me wrong, it is good, ad gets me through my cravings for pumpkin fro yo, but its still not perfect. Here is how it currently stands, but if anyone has any ideas to make it better- pumpkinier or creamier I would love to hear it:

1-2 scoops vanilla protein powder (I currently use MRM, so maybe its not vanilla-ey enough)

1/4 c. plain canned pumpkin

1/2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice

1/4 tsp vanilla extract

2 packets stevia

Water and ice cubes- Blend until smooth.

Any other tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated!
