Changing your holiday thinking

When I was gorowing up, the holiday season was full of warmth, happiness, Christmas trees and crackling fireplaces. But the thing I remember most about the holidays was… the carbs!!!! Cookies and bars, fudge and pie! Its hard to think about going into the holidays without those things. However, I recently had a realization…

I have been planning on having a holiday open house this year to get my friends together one last time before they all take off to see family for Christmas, and all I could think of was the bounty of cookies I would make– how much sugar and white fllour I would have to buy and EAT! And all I could think was… I don’t want this. I don’t want to sit at home all day surrounded by baked goods that will completely destroy my efforts. I put so much time and energy into my workouts and meals, and I don’t want to create an opportunity to set myself back with my fitness goals.

I initially thought an open house would be a great way to start a new tradition for our family, but I told my husband last night that really, I think i am challenged to think about the holidays without all the food, but maybe that is part of growing up. Part of creating traditions is doing things that are congruent with what we believe is good and fun. So, maybe my tradition will be to go see bell-ringers or carolers, or something that will not make us part of the holiday 10-lb weight gain.

Of course DH, who will take a hot wife over a wife who bakes any day of the week, was supportive to cancel the party and find an alternative. So, what are some non-food things that you are all doing over the holiday season???? I’d love feedback on this one!!!

Have a great day everyone!

Get a group together and go ice skating and then treat yourself to a low cal hot chocolate after. Or sledding, or get some girlfriends together and do a christmas craft, maybe even do your cards together…I know it sounds nerdy but it really is so much fun. And you can make some low cal snacks and drinks, and still enjoy the holidays.

I am running 7 miles in a Turkey Trot with my sister on Thanksgiving and the workout facility I train in has just started a month-long challenge so that should keep me pretty motivated and on track. I just had my latest fitness assessment so that encouraged me to join here…now I have to think about Christmas…
