Overcoming Adversity

The last time I worked with my trainer, he pretty much gave me a lecture to the effect that I need to "grow a set" and work harder on my training. Then , a really good guy on the site ( you know hwo you are! ) gets after me to write in my blog more often, so there seems to be the motivation/coaxing I have needed.

 Here goes…………

My last session on Saturday with my trainer seemed good to me at least. I worked harder, moaned and groaned less, worked bodyparts to failure and all in all, a good workout. At 53, it seems to take me at least a whole day to recover. I need input on that.  Is it normal for a 53 year-old guy to need a whole day to recover? I am still far from what you’d call a mature muscleman, and that means I am still not in GREAT shape.

I hit the gym today for many reasons today. Enough of my reason was that I was still smarting from the scolding my trainer gave me. A BIG part of it was to relieve stress. Having a mom who is now 75% incapacitated from a mini-stroke and 2 mild heart attacks is stress with a capital "S". She herself is not alot of work as such however she left a list of her affairs a mile long that she didn’t deal with when she was healthier. it has fallen to me to deal with alot of them and it entails lots of 2-hour round trips to do anything that deals with her affairs and then it is not even a sure thing that anything will be accomplished in any particular trip.

Concurrent to all this but unrelated is the fact that I am laid off from GM for an indefinite time. I am already at the point where I see that I need to change my concept of myself from a victim of Wall Street’s and GM’s mismanagement to that of being a positive and the "sky is the limit" fitness trainer.

Yep, my trainer and a guy named Mark drove me to the gym today and I am so glad I went. I worked mainly on delts, shoulders and some abs and lower back to balance out my ab work. When I am off work, I go to the gym in the morning/early afternoon. I like the crowd then. It is all age groups but they are serious, there to lift with maybe a bit of polite chat whereas the evening crowd is nothing but hordes of younger guys who monopolize equipment while texting or posing to attract the females that also work out there.

Where does overcoming adversity come into all this? At least for now, I’d say enough of it is hitting the gym even when I am so demoralized from spending a good part of a day trying to tie up the loose ends mom has left and nothing gets done . I have lots of days like that lately. Another part of is getting back to the gym after yet another injury or unrelated illness sidelines you. Yet another part is to change your image of yourself from a victim of the economy to that of  having had the door opened for your next career.

That is my 2 cent for today!

HEY DAVE! YES it is very typical of guys your age(& MINE for that matter) to need a day in between lifting. 3 days a week should be sufficient weight training for now, then possibly eventually 4. Just make sure you set up a plan to work all body parts once a week. ALSO, nothing wrong with doing CARDIO on alternate days(6 days of training) then one total DAY OFF! I take a variety of VITAMINS & SUPPLEMENTS that allow me to train more EFFECTIVELY & PAIN FREE! PM me if your interested in my supplement regiment. Remember, WE ALL HAVE STUFF in our lives in these difficult TIMES. My gym time is NON NEGOTIABLE & helps me deal with all those things. AND the GRATITUDE of what I SEE in the MIRROR is worth it ALL! BLESSINGS, Dave.

I’ll echo the above. Recovery - especially as we get up there and are trying to claw our way to our goals - takes time. Injuries are killers. I successfully worked around one but may have to bow to a couple of others that are a result of overtraining (not enough rest?). The one thisng I will stress - the time and energy you invest will make you more effective outside of the gym. Wall Street may have been a bad bet - but you are not!
