Accomplished

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

I’m pretty much destroying my plateau and then some. I have seen strength increases of anywhere from 5lbs on dbells to the next plate up on EVERY exercise. That’s even repeating the same workout that was done the first day of the week, on friday again. Should be hitting 100lb dbells in a week… two tops.

Killer ab workout

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Been experimenting with my ab workouts lately and have found my new favorite.

Hanging Leg Raises 2×10-12 SSET w/ Cable Crunches (drop set) 2×15(10)

If you can stand the burn and you’re doing your leg raises perfectly (no swinging whatsoever, feet up and above your head) this workout will destroy your abs.

Going to the field for a week

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Doing some training from tonight through Tuesday morning. Kinda pissed but that’s just part of being the Army. Went and busted out an upper body workout to maintain while I’m away from the gym. Definitely stocking up on tuna packs, oatmeal, and peanut butter while I’m out there. Here’s to hoping that I don’t regress over the weekend!

Plateau… you slimy skank

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

It was bound to happen sooner or later and my last workout plan that I had been doing for about 5 months finally plateaued out. Made incredible gains on it in strength and size, but training arms twice a week finally hit a wall. I knew it was going to happen but enjoyed it while it lasted.

I’m keeping to my workout split of 3 days on 1 off, 1 day on, 2 off as this has worked magic for me in the past. Going with a 3 day split that works the entire body and on friday will repeat the first workout of the week. Rotate which workout is done twice a week for upper body for built-in cycled "overload/recovery." Also decided to train for strength for a couple weeks. 3 sets x 4-6 for first major movement of each muscle with a drop set on the last one. Talk about killer. Lots of drop sets, lots of stretch overload, lots of supersets working with 4-6 reps and a rare 7-9 on certain iso exercises. So far so good this week as I’ve been sorer than I’ve been in weeks.

Cardio will be kept to a minimum, only on the weekends in the mornings as I’m still trying to bulk up to 180 before I cut back down. So 175ish with a relaxed 6er.

THAT Guy…

Monday, July 14th, 2008

During my workout today I couldn’t help but notice these loud crashes and loud yelling and hollering. Everyone is looking at this dude snatching cleaning weight and then slamming it to the ground and giving a roar. Motivation is cool, but when it’s early evening and it’s crowded, the only thing you’re doing is making yourself look like a tool. Even worse, this same guy was pacing in between groups of people using weights and forcing some of them to stop mid rep so that they wouldn’t hit him. Shit, I was mid shoulder press and he bumped my seat while he was swinging his arms around like a moron and flying around the room. I finished my set and went over to him and tapped his shoulder. Asked the guy politely to stay in his power rack and let the rest of the gym work out without having to worry about him interrupting.

Why don’t people understand and practice gym etiquette? Honestly, it’s not hard to be a decent person in the gym and respect that everyone else is there for the same thing. Some people just can’t be respectful, it seems.

This guy is almost as bad as the guy who doesn’t take his bluetooth out.

Which ranks slightly higher than the guy who TALKS on his bluetooth while doing a set.

Anyone got more THAT guys to add to this list?

So this is where I can ramble to anyone and no one…

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

I’ve only been in the gym game for a few years now. Like most people, I started out trying the coolest and flashiest workouts that were advertised. Floundered around for the first year while still in HS. Kinda did off and on before deploying but the mandatory 30+ miles we were running every week took a toll on any kind of muscular gains I would have like to seen. Deploying was actually a blessing in that I had the time and opportunity to really dive into the weights. Floundered for a while still, but after realizing the stuff I was doing wrong (mostly nutrition), I really took off. The most amazing feeling is finally seeing all the pieces come into place and the puzzle completed. Lift weights, BAM, improvement and calculable weight increases. I’m the kind of person that always strives to know as much as possible and filter out the BS. Part of the reason I chose to become a personal trainer. After seeing how people worked out in the gym and the numerous ‘wtf is THAT guy doing?’s I decided I didn’t want to ever be one of those. Even had a couple bad experiences with personal trainers way back when I thought machine shoulder presses would give you that V shape… ya I know (insert laughter). I try not to shake my head when I go to the gym but I can’t help it sometimes when I see people begging their bodies to break or get injured. I rarely offer any help to guys in the gym, at least military ones, since most think that they know everything. However, and we get to the point of this ramble, those same guys will come up after I’m done stretching asking if I take martial arts or something since I am freakishly flexible. Just find it funny that military guys, about 99%, won’t accept help for weight lifting but will always shake their heads at flexibility training.
