Happy Memorial Day!
Monday, May 25th, 2009I just want to take a minute to reflect on all of those who have made this such a great country!
I was at my Y today and the place was way more packed at 11am than on a typical day. Among those attending were a few of the everyday walkers who have served in the WWII and Korea. I’m always amazed when I see them turning out the miles on the mill.
OK today was a pretty good day. I was able to superset most of my muscles as part of my arms and shoulders. I did forget the mp3 player and it did make cardio a little more challenging. I did pump out a good 30 minutes on the recumbent bike and arctrainer.
My real challenge for the week is designing a good tryout and weekly practice for my kids. I’m supposed to pick my team for the fall and try to train my current team for this Sunday’s game. If my kids were not 5-0 at this point I would normally just focus on picking my team for the fall, but now that my team that was 2-6 last year is now 5-0 there is a lot of excitement among the kids to close out what they’ve started.
I must say this is a bit of a challenge for me as I typically coach to teach all of my kids all of the positions on the field since they will not always be the goal scorer as they move up to junior high and then high school. I’m also trying to mentally prepare my best goal scorer to be my top goal keeper. Luckily he’s learned how to finish the ball better since he knows what tends to be easy for him to stop. I just hope he sticks it out instead of picking up football. My other challenge is trying to work my one head case player back into my team. His parent’s would rather have him quit, but I’d rather him continue trying to play so he can learn to control his emotions.
Anyhow, one more win needed to move onto the stanley cup! I guess there is something to be said for planning life and workouts around the hockey playoffs.
Go Pens! Thank you to all those who have fought for freedom out there!
