Friday was dead day…..

December 17, 2007

Okay, I kinda told this story to a friend and got my #’s mixed up, so I didn’t dead quite as much as I said, just so you know Nicole :)

First, I wanted to work deads at a disadvantage, so I didn’t use any 45’s, instead, the heaviest plate I loaded with was a 35, dropping the bar height a good 1.5 - 2 inches.  This day was a "max effort" day so the goal was basically to max.  I was using a standard bar, so I know if I come back at this with a true deadlift bar and use the 45’s I’ll certainly hit a better weight.

Anyhoo, I started off with 115lbs and progressively worked my way up stacking on 2 - 35’s with each set.  I started wearing a belt with 10 35’s on the bar and only made 2 incremental changes less then 70lbs.  After I hit 12 - 35’s (420lbs + 45lbs bar)  I didn’t jump straight into another 70lbs, instead I only whent up 50lbs, this was one heck of a pull and very nearly the best I was going to hit that day, but it wasn’t quite the best.  So, off came the 25’s and on when the 35’s, for a total of 14 - 35’s (490lbs + 45lbs bar)  I had told nicole I hit 545lbs, but after I did the math again, I realized it was only 535lbs.  Still not too shabby.

This is my best lift to date with a standard bar and at a deficit, I’m looking forward to the 600lbs dead, it ain’t that far away now :)

Hope ya’ll have a Merry Christmas.

Back from the meet….

December 9, 2007

I just went to the California Ironman powerlifting championships.  I think I’ll compete next year.  The meet was long, tiring, and totally got me fired up to compete.  I’m not totally out classed and I think by next year I’ll do well.  The heaviest dead I saw was only 650lbs, which I totally feel I can be capable of by next year, my squats need serious work, but my raw bench wasn’t to far off from what I saw another guy, about my build, doing.  Anyhoo, I caught the bug, and I’m ready to start competing.

Wish me luck :)

Back in the game and hungry again….

December 4, 2007

Okay, the wrist is felling much better and I’m ready to start hitting everything full force agian.  I did not hit squats like I wanted to last week, had too much going on, but  I ain’t gonna let that stop me this week.

As for bodyweight, haven’t lost much in the past 3-4weeks, but I have a feeling that is changing.  I’m back on the eating schedual, and carb cycling.  Weekends are a dream, and Mondays are true "Mondays" as the carbs get chopped off for 5 days.  I don’t know if I’ll make the goal by the end of this year, but I’ll be close and I’ll continue to do this until I’m at a solid 260lbs.

In other news, I’m going to veiw my first powerlifting meet this weekend.  As something I’m looking forward to probably doing in the future I want to see what it is all about.  Ever since I began weight training at 14 years old, I’ve wanted to move heavy weight and I didn’t really care what I looked like.  Well, now I want to look good, but I also want to lift some serious weight, so I’m aiming for my goal of 260lbs first and then I plan on training for powerlifting.  I don’t want to gain to much weight, as that will  help with keeping in a lower weight class, but also I don’t want to get as chunky looking as I was at 295lbs.

So anyhoo, that is the update, hope ya’ll have a great week!

Damage control….

November 30, 2007

Okay, so I know it has been a while but I was injured.  I did learn my lesson though.  See, I’ve been working on power lifting and in doing so have totally revamped my bench training.  One thing I started doing was "lock-outs".  Well, it was performing this exercise using a smith machine that got me in trouble.  In order to unrack the weight, you have to role the bar, either forward or backward depending on how your set up, for me it was forward that night.  Well, all was going just fine untill I hit 400lbs, prior to that I did hit 380lbs with flying colors.  Well, at 400 when I roled forward, my right wrist popped and gave out, the weight drove my arms down and, unfortunately tweeked my wrist.  Thankfully I had stops keeping the bar about 3 inches above my chest.  Anyhoo, I was jack and have been doing about anything I could to avoid certain pressure on that wrist.

I am back in the game now, there is still a twinge of pain, but I can bench again, dead lift, and later tonight I’ll find if I can hold onto a squat bar without the pain.  Anyhoo, that is all for now, hope ya’ll have a great weekend.

A good curling day….

November 7, 2007

Okay, first off I believe I now know what pains me in my left arm ever time I do pull-ups and curls.  I believe I have injured the brachialis and it has never completely recovered.  Still, after a few sets and it gets warmed up I can generally get through my workouts.  Well, monday the 5th was one of those nights.

As with every monday night, I started things off with lat pulls, to warm up.  After a few sets I do 3 sets of 10 pull ups, this night it was wide pull, alternating narrow, flip alternating narrow.  All went well, some pain was there yes, but I made it through my sets better then most nights so I considered it a very good night.

I had the intention of doing straight bar curls as my second exercise and only going up to 165lbs.  Well, when the squat rack was free (yes there is only one rack in this gym and since I prefer a narrow stance whilest doing BB curls, I won’t use a bench) I started going through my sets.  Warmups felt good and when I was doing 135, I had the incling it would be a great night.  I’ll also admit I had a few friends there and more then a few sets of eyes watching so showing off was also part of my motivation.  I bumped the weight up to 165lbs and did and easy 5 reps.  Given I had already done pull-ups I was pleasently supprised at my strength and more then happy to push it up one final time.  Now, since I injured my brachialis 5 months ago, I haven’t even touched this amount of weight, so it was nice to be able to hit it again, 185lbs on the bar.  Now, do I swing, yep, sure do with that weight, but it isn’t out of control, so don’t go thinking I look like I’m doing the mommbo while doing my BB curls.  The last one was a true struggle as the weight stopped it upward progress about 2/3 of the way up, but it got to moving eventually and I did infact complete 5 whlle reps.

My night wasn’t over, but that sure was tons of fun.  I finished everything up with some dumbel curls, cross body hammer grip.  With each curl I pull the dumbel up high enough to kiss it, though I never do, that would just be wrong.  I did work up the the 95’s but my set was only for 4 reps at that weight.  Still, all in all, I’d say it was a great night for bi’s.

Thanks for reading…

Maxed on dead today…

November 2, 2007

Okay, I still have some things to do on form but it is looking good.  Maxed today with 545lbs couldn’t get 565lbs more then a few inchs off the floor.  I was told something about my form tonight that I need to work on so I don’t think about it when pulling, had I had that part down I know 565lbs would have happened.  Anyhoo, had a great time, pulled on an actual deadlift bar, an that was totally cool.  Can’t wait to nail 600lbs.  That is coming and so much more.
