Another weekend of overeating. Not just regular run-of-the-mill overeating. This was Championship Overeating Extravaganza 2009! Ok, not that bad, and it really only was one massive meal where we went to this really awesome buffet for brunch…but if you also tack on all the other little bits that went along with it, it’s not so bad really. I’m also not that upset over it. Shizz happens…I’ll get over it. Switched up the workout today. Felt good. Didn’t shower tho…hope I don’t stink up the office. (I laid on extra deodorant just to make sure).
Anyways, the title of my post today is fear of success, as you can plainly see. I got an article today e-mailed to me and it talked about how we subconciously self-sabotage ourselves because we fear success. It’s a real, documented thing. (Why didn’t my wife mention this to me? She’s the phych major!) Anyways, I thought it was tremendously interesting, and really spoke volumes to me about what I’ve been doing to myself. I won’t reprint the article that was sent to me, but I googled "fear of success" and got a great result on the first link. l put here for you to check out…

http://psychology.suite101.com/article.cfm/how_fear_of_success_works

Interesting stuff indeed….

Ok, so if you know me, you know that I’m trying to cut the fat. You might also know that I have a tendency to lose focus, over eat, and end up self sabotaging my goals. Well, after weighing in at a phenominal 221-ish last Friday, I figured I deserved a bit of a break and thought, "I’ll have a bit of a cheat day on Friday".

It lasted till Sunday.

Ugh….so disappointed in myself. Now I’m right back up close to where I started and have to work down again. Maybe "cheat days" shouldn’t be allowed when trying to cut fat. I always considered cheat days a good way to trick your body into thinking that higher calories were gonna go in, so rev up the metabolism to get ready to burn all those extra calories the next day when in fact you have a defecit so end up losing more fat kind of thing. Of course, if it lasts a whole weekend…that’s a different story…

So, back in the saddle….again….for the bazzilionth time…I don’t expect this to be the last time I fall out either….

Every gym has them to a certain degree. You know the folk. You want to use a certain machine, but they’re doing like 10,000 sets of 50. Ok, so you modify by doing that exercise later, or working in with them, or even doing something different that targets the same muscle ("Good Lord man, what are you THINKING?!?") Sometimes the dumbbell size you need it not there, or…well anyways, you get the picture. Throws off your workout right?

Here’s one that takes the cake: I started with back…no bigs. Then I wanted to do chest and shoulders. As this was my heavy day (well, really only one weight day a week - since taking on the fitness classes to cut some of the fat) I do bench press and military presses on the Smith machine. I notice that a woman milling about close to them (there are two), and as I go closer, I notice there are weights on both of them. One was in a squat position (shoulder height), the other in a deadlift position (near ankles). She was just about to start on a set of squats and I pointed to the other Smith machine and asked, "Are you using this?" Before I even got to this, she replied, "Yeah, I’m using that."

*pause*

W… t.. f…??? (fill in the blanks)

So YOU’RE so SPECIAL that you need to use BOTH Smith machines the gym has to offer, just so you can superset your squats with your bent over rows? Are you f..king kidding me?!? Seriously!!! Maybe put some work into it - use one, and keep swithing up the plates…or do the bent over rows with the BARBELL THAT WAS 2 FEET TO YOUR LEFT!!! Some people…

Workout was so-so. Great back day, but I was tired from my week of workouts. Looking forward to the rest I’m gonna get this weekend.

Well, after a week of 3 group fitness classes and one day of heavy weights, I went for another run today. This was my mile circuit again. Completed in a time of 9:23:38. It was quicker, which is awesome, but the second doubly awesome thing is that at the end, my son joined me and I ended up running a little further than my mile. I told him to watch for me running up the block, which he did, and he joined me at the front of the house and we ran around our block again (I normally start my run with a run around the block then go around other the other parts of the neighborhood). It was an extra 300m or so, and I don’t even feel super winded after the workout. And I got to include one of my kids in my workout plans - something he’s been asking for. Freakin’ AWESOME!!!

So I woke up a little sore today from yesterday’s spinning class. Right from the get-go, I decided that since I did cardio yesterday, I would do weights today. 11:30 rolls around and I grab my gym bag and walk to the gym. At the front desk, theres a bit of more people there than usual - talking about some class that’s just starting up or some junk…I didn’t pay too much attention. As I’m getting changed, the music stops and a woman’s voice comes over the P.A. system: "Hey everybody! Come on out and try out our brand new Adrenaline class starting up in 5 minutes!! A great mix of cardio and weights, etc…" Hmm…weights you say? I want to to do weights….why not?!?

Ho-Lee Crap!

Turns out it was this circuit training/boot camp/kick you in the face while your hands are tied behind your back kind of thing. Then there was this sprinting thing, and core work. It was harder than the spinning class. Brutal. I still have a light sweat going on almost an hour later. My back is sore (not sure why) and yeah…brutal.

Calories burned - somewhere around 600-700 in 35 mins.

SIX TO SEVEN HUNDRED!!!

I think I’ll be back next week.

So I’ve decided to try to up my cardio capacity, and I took my first spinning class today. I was pretty nervous about it at first, as I’ve never really taken a group fitness class before, and I’d hate to be that person that left after 10 mins cause I couldn’t hack it. (Although, after 10 mins, I felt like it!) Anyways, I make it kind of easy on myself…not too easy - but I didn’t kill myself either. The tunez were awesome and I think I gave it a decent effort. 2 things happened that were bad:

1) My arm rests collapsed on me. I didn’t hurt myself, but it might have been funny to see. Then, when I tried to pull it back up, I ripped it out and couldn’t get the damn thing back in. I just hopped on the next bike and kept going. I fixed it after class.

2) I got a stich (cramp, whatever) near the end, so I just biked for one song. Least I didn’t quit.

I’m still sweating sittin here at my desk and class ended over half an hour ago. I’m going to try it again Wednesday. I figger around 600+ calories in 35 mins.
