<4 months from Nationals - muscle maturity?

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

-2 lipo-6x capsules; 50 min treadmill 3.5 mph 6.5-12% incline

-1 multi-vitamin .5 c oatmeal; 4 oz chicken

-.5 c rice; 4 oz tilapia

-4×6 pull ups, (pedastal, bench jumps, 1-arm push-ups, leg raises) 10 each x 2 sets, 20 min stretching, 40 min stepper

-2 scoops green protein, 1 banana, 1 tbsp pb

-1 lipo 6x

-1 multi-vitamin 4 oz chicken; .5 c brocoli

-4 oz tilapia in salad

…I’m debating over doing more cardio this evening.  I weighed in at 112.4 lbs yesterday morning (~3 lbs heavier then I was at my last show).  I think I need to be around 107 to be as lean as I want to be.  I have been talking with different people about the whole "muscle maturity" thing.  It seems no matter how much I diet I won’t get lean enough simply because of muscle maturity (and the lack thereof - I’m only 22).  So what should I do?  Do I take time off from competing to train and get older?  Or do I keep going in spite of the soft look I am bound to have onstage (http://iajephoto.com/photocart/index.php?do=photocart&viewImage=113486)?

too many muscles “for a girl”?

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

Crazy how you can feel so pumped about your training and it only takes one person’s comments to make you doubt yourself.  Yesterday, someone left me a comment on another site that said I have too many muscles "for a girl" and that it was nasty… Didn’t really affect me immediately but I haven’t stopped thinking about it so I guess it did…

Anyway, today is rest day.  I have been pushing hard at the gym and the track these last few weeks and haven’t taken a day off.  So today I will not do ANYTHING physically demanding.  Instead I will pamper myself.  Tomorrow I will do cardio and fitness routine work and then Saturday I will start back.  Hopefully these two days will give my body a chance to rev itself back up…

Food can’t hug you, so why is it such a comfort?

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

Taking a break from my usual countdown blogs to get some input.  I’ve always heard on Oprah, Discovery channel, Dr. Phil, etc that people use food as comfort to deal with emotions but I never really understood that.  I get that we use food to celebrate everything (graduation=go out to dinner; family in town=bbq; good grades=ice cream; you get the idea)… But when it came to the using food to deal with emotions I always thought of it more of eating from boredom.

Last night, it all became clear.  I wasn’t having the best night emotionally and I found myself eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and butter pecan ice cream at midnight!  1.  I’m supposed to be cutting back my bread to no more than one serving every other day right now. 2. I’ve cut dairy. 3. I’ve stopped eating after 10pm… Failed all 3 miserably last night.  But more than messing up my diet, I’m amazed that it made me feel better.  Even if it was a false feeling of peace and happiness, it was enough for me to finally fall asleep.

Looking back, I’m sure I’ve done this or something similar before.  But since I’ve began watching my diet, I’ve become so aware of every little thing in my training, my personal life, my emotions, and of course in my nutrition.

Looking forward to your comments.

Countdown to Team U 2007 - Dec 19, 2006

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

I’ve been reading all these articles on bodybuilding.com about training in the off season so I’ve been hitting the weights and the track hard!!

Dec 15 - Friday

4×300m (55, 56, 56, 61 sec)

Clean: 5 @ 90lbs. 2×5 @ 110lbs

Lunges: 5 each leg x 3 @ 90lbs

Bench: 10-8-5 @ 105-115-130lbs

Calf raises: 3 x 30

Sit ups: 3 x 25

push-ups: 10-8

Dec 18 - Monday

8 x half approach jumps (pain in right hamstring)

2×500m and 4×100m

clean: 2 x 5 @ 90lbs

Dec 19 - Tuesday

5x standing long jump

5×3 box jumps (each leg)

10×3 box jumps hop-step (each leg)

10×1 box jump last phase (short approach)

10×100m FAST (high knees)

Our word for today is "OUCH"!! plyometrics followed by sprinting really hurts.  Hopefully it will help my anaerobic endurance for my 2 minute routine at Team U.  For right now, all I can say is ouch…. I am excited that my bench press is improving again.  Friday’s set of 5 @ 130lbs was pretty easy.  I skipped out on most of my lifting yesterday courtesy of those 500m runs that almost killed me.  I’ll hit it tommorrow.  Hopefully I’ll be able to get 145lbs for 5 reps.  Also, friday i did lunges instead of squats because my lower back had been bothering me.  But it seems to be feeling better now so I think I’ll try squats again tommorrow.

Countdown to Team Universe 2007 - Dec 4, 2006

Monday, December 4th, 2006

The word for today is motivation.  I’m not a fan of cold weather, so when it dips below 60 I’m not a happy camper.  Today it stayed around 40 so needless to say I didn’t make it to the track.  I justified not going by saying that I have over 6 months before the competition but I know there are competitors out there training right now.  Its 8pm and I’m beating myself up for not working out today.  If I want my pro-card I know I’m going to have to get over slumps like this.

Anyone have any cold weather workouts (i.e. indoor) they can share?  I mean I do ab exercises and pushups but thats about it…
