My First Mini-Marathon (13.1 miles)

Training starts tomorrow!

So for the new year I decided my body needs a new challenge. I’ve been lifting for a couple years now and I think it is time to expand my fitness horizens. Running the Kentucky Derby Festivle Mini-Marathon is something that I have always wanted to do, but the only problem is, like most lifters and people in general, I do not excel when it comes to running long distances. I think the longest I have ever ran is the two miles I used to run on saturday mornings for sophomore baseball conditioning (my best time was 13:36). So starting tomorrow, I will begin running three times a week in the mornings, with my goal begin able to run as far as I can without stopping for 30 minutes. I will continue this until the middle of February, when I will start a running program I found on Marathonrookie.com.

I will also curve my weight room workout to more of a cutting and defining workout, rather than the mass building workout I have been on for the past 7 months.  I will also be doing some light plyometrics on days I am not running in an attempt to decrease my race time. My diet will have to change slightly, but eating has never been a problem for me!

I feel as if my first 5 months (April 25th is the big day!) of this new year will be challenging (I am also taking 19 hours of course work at school with the goal of A’s), but I think I can do it.

If you have any advice at all, please throw it my way. It is always appreciated. Good luck to you and all your goals in 2009.

Steve

Another good site is runners world. They can also set you up with a a program. I ran a half last year in just under 2 hours (fast for me). Don’t know if I’ll do another this year. Good Luck with your training, keep mixing it up.
