Free weights or machines?

January 10, 2007

I’m curious as to what the hardworking people of Bodyspace prefer to use, free weights, machines, or both pretty evenly?

I’ve seen seveal people who use nothing but machines and they’re pretty good size.  On the flip side I’ve also seen very fit looking bodies hitting the free weights.  I use a mix of both but tend to lean towards free weights.  I think they feel better overall.

Just want to hear what you have to say!

Gym know-it-alls

January 7, 2007

So the gym is crazy now that all the New Years resolutioners are coming in.  Nothing wrong with that, I applaud them for making lifestyle changes.  I’m making several myself.  The one thing that really fires me up though are the people who walk around talking to others about how they can train people rather than doing their own workout.  Especially when they are severely out of shape.

I know that I’m not in good shape, but I’m in much better shape than the guy I’ll call ‘Joe’.  Joe saw me doing hang cleans yesterday and thought I could use some of his knowledge.  Joe actually tried to initiate a conversation while I was in the middle of my set!  To make matters worse, Joe I don’t believe has set foot in a gym in probably over 10 years by the looks of him.

Well, he proceeded to tell me that hang cleans are dangerous and that machines are the only way to go for building muscle.  Dang, I haven’t been so annoyed in a long time.  To make matters worse, I’m a nice guy and have a hard time telling someone to bug off.  He couldn’t even take the hint of me putting my headphones back on to continue with my workout.

Lucky for me, unlucky for her, he moved on to help some other young lady who was doing bench press.  I hope he gets his priorities straight soon and starts to lift rather than walk around imparting his grand wisdom on all!

Hopefully there aren’t too many ‘Joes’ in your own gym!
