The follow-up appt after my surgery

Friday, May 18th, 2007

Yesterday was my dreaded follow-up appt for my appendix surgery… I, being a worrier by nature thought I may hear some bad news. Much to my surprise the doctor said I am healing faster then 95% of his patients. Awesome news! He also gave me the green light to start walking all I want and do light yoga. Something is better then nothing right? I also learned in about a week and a half as tolerable I can start running again and resume other forms of cardio. The catch…I cannot lift any weights until my 6 week mark….which is about a month away.

I figure something is better then nothing and starting tonight I am going to slowly start walking as tolerable and in the morning I will do some yoga. That will be my routine for the next week and a half then its back to lgiht running and cardio progressing to intense cardio for about 3 weeks… then its back to weights [the one form of exercise I LOVE].

In the meantime I am going to keep up with my clean eating, hydrate, hydrate and oh yeah hydrate…keep up with my supplements and get plenty of sleep at night to heal.

Thats it…

How do I supplement not being able to train while recovering from surgery?

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

10 days since my appendix removal…only another 3-5 weeks to go until I can train again. I am feeling much MUCH better- this week I returned to work, started eating solid food again and finally am not in so much pain that I need massive painkillers. Hurray for me! I should be truly happy I am this far but I, being me with my high expectations for myself, feel like I should be able do more! I am absolutley going stir crazy not being able to lift anything over 10 lbs, not running, no yoga, no long walks with my daughter- nadda. I can’t believe how much I took my health for granted never really slowing down long enough to be thankful! Shame on me… So now I sit with this dilemma…

I am worried #1 that I will loose all the lean muscle mass I have quite literally worked my behind off for while not training and recovering #2 I am worried that I will gain some weight because I am not training and that isnt going to help me for my September goal #3 I am worried I will be a whimp by the time I am recovered…. I know this one is dumb but there is something truly empowering when you can squat as much as you weigh…

So these are my fears… what now? I think I am going to look at switching my diet to lower calorie intake (not that I ate that much when I trained 1500-1900 calories/day (most from lean proteins, veggies, fruits and oatmeal)) I also am looking at upping my vitamin intake and green tea intake to produce a faster recovery- because these things up your immune system. I am also looking for some form of a supplement that promotes fat loss and supports lean muscle without it being necessary to train with it…my solution for now is CLA. I use to take it and it helped to keep weight off when I was recovering from a knee injury.

Those are my ideas…my fears… maybe my solutions? As far as the stir craziness…I think I am going to be reading even more and maybe even taking a rosetta stone language course to keep my mind busy while I cannot train.

Wish me luck… any advice is GREATLY appriciated!!!

I just got released from the hospital…looks like no training for a while.

So up until last weekend I was working out pretty intense - just being lazy about blogging my workouts on here. Last weekend I was hit with some massive stomach cramps and fevers ranging from 101-104. I figured it was the stomach flu and chose to rest up for a few days, increase my vitamin C intake and drink lots of water. Well….by Wednesday night I was in tears from the fevers and pain so I ended up at the emergency room. After many many many tests I was admitted although they still could not figure out what was wrong…. after lots of blood work, CT scans, x-rays, ultra-sounds ect ect ect they decided to do "exploratory surgery" on me on Saturday. Exploratory surgery in case meant they were going to cut open above my belly button and stick a little camera in to see what was causing me so much pain- not too exciting if you ask me. So Saturday after pain meds, then an allergic reaction to an antibiotic, then steriods, and allergy medicine I went under the knife… 3 hours later I came out of sugery to wake up with no appendix and with only pain from the surgery. All fevers gone and all stomach cramps gone… Who knew an appendix could cause all that???

Needless to say I am recovering….I finally got released from the hospital today and came home (home sweet home!) The big fat negative this sets back my training weeks!!!! Minimally I need to rest for 4 weeks and maybe even longer.I was told I can get up and go for walks in about 1 1/2 -2 weeks and go really slow from there. Wish me luck in my recovery and my patience with it!!!!
