I love full bodies!

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

After years of exercising, it seems like only one type of resistance workout actually does any good for me. That’s the full body workout. I love full body workouts! Here’s why:

1. I know that when I’m done, I’ve worked every muscle group, hard.

2. I’m not obligated to come back to the gym tomorrow and work muscle groups I didn’t get covered today. And, as in the case of quite a few knuckleheads in my gym, I actually work muscles (i.e. legs) that they never do.

3. Not only do I get a great resistance workout for strength, but I also get my HR up, so it’s awesome cardio, too!

4. I really feel like I get a workout that’s worth something.

5. I now have time to focus on other areas of fitness on my off days.

There are some who swear that full body workouts don’t do anything for them. Chances are, they just haven’t tried them long enough to see the results. The only time I’ve ever gotten results as far as strength, etc., is concerned, was using a full body workout. There’s some research out there that suggests full bodies are the best type for any fitness goal, but, just like every fitness research, it’s obviously not supposed to be generalized to everyone. Anyway, give full bodies a try. After you get over your grumblings for not doing a split body (or just an upper body as in the knucklehead example I gave earlier), you might actually enjoy them. But if not, that’s okay. You can use your splits, too.

Back to work

Sunday, April 15th, 2007

After not completing a workout in 7 days, I finally got one completed last Friday (4/13). My allergies are still affecting me, but I can breathe well enough to do a workout. And, the workout that I did was a great one. I picked up right where I had left off, so I hadn’t lost any strength. I was sore Saturday, though, but that’s okay.

I taught a BodyPump class Saturday morning, so I technically did two weight workouts consecutively. Don’t like doing that normally, but it wasn’t too bad this time. I came home and slept in the afternoon for a couple of hours. That felt really good.

So now it’s back to work.

an unexpected diagnosis

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

I went to the doctor today to see what was wrong with me. Found out that I did not have pnemonia, which was good news. The bad news…

I have asthma. Kind of a blow today. Not that it’s really bad asthma, and not that it will really prevent me from doing what I normally have been doing. But for some reason, I’ve been taking it kind of hard. I’ll get over it. Especially since at least now I know what it is, I have medicine to control it, and I can go back to the doctor and be confident in what I’m talking about.

So really, all is good. I felt better today, esp. after getting my meds. I’m hoping that I can do a workout tomorrow, but we’ll see how much energy I have and how much I’m still coughing up a lung. A little bit of rest from exercising is probably good for me anyway.

For now…rest, fluids, and drugs.

I hate being sick! :(

Sunday, April 8th, 2007

Every time. I’m going good. I have a great week of workouts. I make progress. I push myself to new limits. And then, out of nowhere….BAM! It hits me. Some type of sinus, bronchial, lung, throat infection. Every spring. Every fall. IT DRIVES ME CRAZY!

So last week wasn’t that great of a week for working out because I was battling whatever I have. It’s probably a form of pnemonia, but I refuse to go to the doctor unless I absolutely have to. So we’ll see if I can just get over it with the help of some very powerful OTC medication.

And, hopefully, it’s “back to work” this week.

Wow! A 5K Run!

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

AAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!

That’s what I first thought when I signed up to run a 5K for the local chamber on Sunday. I hadn’t run a 5K EVER! I make it sound like such a long race, but I guess for me, it is.

But I did it, and I loved it! I actually do enjoy running, if I have a purpose and if I have someone to run with. A bunch of employees from the gym went and we all ran. I ran with a couple all the way through, which made it much more enjoyable, and it didn’t seem like we were just running and running and running. And it was through the woods, which was so awesome.

Anyway, I placed 3rd in the 25-29 year old male division! I know, nothing great, but still, I wasn’t really trying to win. I didn’t even push myself…I just ran. Amazing what you can accomplish when you just go out and do it.

So now I’m thinking I should run more often. We’ll see.
