Final Prep

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Had my last run today before the half on Sunday. Did a little over 5 miles in just over 42 minutes. I know i won’t keep that pace on Sunday as that was pretty quick for me. The weather is calling for T-storms but were still a few days away so hopefully that will change. I talked with my friend today and he said were running rain or shine. I should get workouts in tomorrow and Saturday but will keep my legs to minimum as I don’t won’t to pull a muscle before the race.

See ya on Sunday!

Next Sunday

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

As I am looking forward to next weekends half marathon, I thought I would put down a few thoughts. First my goal would be to make it in under 2 hours but I seriously doubt I can do it. Last week I did 12 in 2 hours and today I did 11 just over 1:45 so I’m gonna have to shave some minutes somewhere. Plus the guy I’m running with isprobably a little slower than I am. Maybe the crowd will get us fired up and push a little faster. I’ve never been one to watch my diet but if anyone has any suggestions I would be appreciated. I know I should have carbs so I’ll probably have pasta the night before . The race starts at 9:30 so I don’t really know what to eat that morning. I usually go out about 8 so I generally eat after. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks,

Gary

Half Marathon

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

OK I have 2 weeks before my first half marathon and I managed 12 miles this morning and if pressed I’m sure I could have gotten 1 more in so next week I’m gonna drop it down to 10 miles. After this is over I don’t think I’m gonna be running this far again until my next and probably last half in Sept along the Hudson River in NYC. My calfs are hurting and I don’t have the desire to stay on the course for 2 hours. The 1 hour mark is fine so I think I’m gonna drop it down to 5 milers and 10k’s. I also think it takes something out of my lifting workouts as well. I like the fact of burning some fat calories but I think it’s also burning up some muscle and I would rather keep the muscle so the shorter races are going to be in order. This way I can always say I did it but I’m not doing it forever, well maybe when I get older and the muscle starts going anyway.

BTW I used to smoke a pack a day for 20 some odd years so it is possible if anyone out there still smokes.

5k

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

Had a 5k today with a friend from work. We ran in the cargo area of JFK Airport. I thought we had a pretty good pace going considering on the way back the wind was right in our face. We ended up finishing just under 28. The line was to long for the chips so we didn’t bother so I don’t know what place we’ll finish but he was happy we were under the 9 min pace. As I am preparing for the LI half marathon I did 9.7 miles yesterday and my left calf just tightened up on about mile 7, I did run the rest but I probably should have shut it down.

R.I.P Dutch!

Past Week

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

I’m being transferred from my job starting tomorrow and so I’ve been going out with my co-workers from last Friday to this past Friday. I think all that eating out and partying took a toll. I went out for a run yesterday and really struggled to put in 5 miles. I managed 11 today as I have my first half marathon on May 3rd. People say as long as you can get to 10 you can get to 13. I would like to get to 13 before so that i know I can make it. As I finished today I’m sure I could have gone 2 more but I’d still like to do it first. As for my workouts they struggled as well. I didn’t hit the weights at all last week. I did get a workout in yesterday and it felt good. Sometimes life takes over and the workouts have to take a backseat, as I see it 1 week isn’t gonna kill me. I’ll make it up this week.

See ya.
