It’s not your workout…it is you

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Yeah I said it…so! why do people keep doing the same thing and expect different results? Change up the pace…do something different damn it!! Where is your intensity…yes people you can lift weights with intensity…if you try. Breakup the monotony…heck try superseting your routine…bet you feel the burn. Change up your routine every two weeks or so…yeah I know you still hit the same muscle groups but the different movement will be a change of pace for your body. Minimum effort from you yields minimum change in your body composition. Don’t depend on another person’s routine to give you the same results…won’t happen why? your genetics are different…so the results will be different; trick is to give your body every advantage possible (combine diet, supplements and training program).  In closing remember this: no amount of dieting, supplements, or workouts are going to give the body you want unless you put in the work. It’s not the workout…it’s you!

Who is your favorite bodybuilder…past, present or future

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Let me start off by saying that I have a great appreciation for the people on this site…wether you are in the bussiness or working out in your basement. Well all have that one person that we feel epitomizes what a bodybuilder is…be it their interaction with the fans or their dedication to the iron. One of my personal favorites is Surge Nubret; he wasn’t the biggest guy, but his symmetry was on point…look him up some time. So with that said who is that one bodybuilder… that made you say "I want to look that!"

Its that time of year…again.

It is like the migration of the Canadian geese…each year the geese go south for the winter (I think :0 ) in search of a warmer climate and reuniting with geese they haven’t seen all year. Well anyone who has been in a gym for more than a day knows that this is the time of the year when people make themselves the same promise as they did last year…that is to get in better shape… which creates the great gym migration. This is a good thing, new faces, a boost in your local gym revenue and more people discover BodyBuilding.com…but this migation can become also an annoyance… longer wait to use the machines, you have to fight through the crowd to get to the dumbbell rack…like I said ; an annyoance.

The bright side to this is that will take about 3 months before the crowds dissipate, but untill then, try to be nice to the newest members to your local weight lifting den… when they ask a question in the middle of your rep…don’t throw the dumbbells at em…take at second and explain the rules of the jungle…but only once; after that they are fair game.  I know that it can be a difficult period, but just be patient…remember you were new at one time.

For us not just me… a friend’s lament

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Ever notice when you tell someone that you on a diet or going to the gym, you always seem to get the "why" response…followed by the you look fine to me. I never really understood why people seem to think that their view of you is the only one that counts. It is sad to say that most of the time this the response from family members of significant others. Maybe it is a fear that if you change that you will drift apart and leave. Go figure… People that are close to you should have your best interest at heart and support you no matter what (unless you were hurting yourself) I got an email from a friend who just separted from their spouse, all because she decided to make a change for a healthier life style. Mind you for years I have suggested that she start working out because the weight was creeping up, but she always said that here baby loves me this way…alright. So I guess after hearing that they had high blood pressure, diabetes and all the problems that accompany being obese; she decided to finally commit to a change.  She said that begining things were good, her bhusband was supportive and even when to the gym with her.

Things took a bad turn when her hubby stop going but she kept up the routine and started losing weight and gaining alot of self-esteem. Now here is where the ugliness in people tends to come out…each time she would leave for the gym her husband would start playing twenty questions and asking for a definitive time for their return from the gym…if she came back a minute late and arguments would erupt, shortly after that accusations of infidelity started frequenting  the arguments; she went as far as quiting the gym and setting up a basic gym in the basement…now you would think that would make the situation better, but then the complaints of spending to much time in the basement and wasting money on equipment and suppliments came up…she said that the final straw came when he told her that he wanted his old wife back….WTF, you mean the woman that was one twinkie away from the grave?? why would you say something like that? Give up the new lifestyle or lose me.

Sad to say that her decision cause her a great deal of heart achce and pain. I could tell that she wasn’t over the breakup, but offered no words of wisdom…just my ear for her to bend at anytime…people don’t like change…change in themselves or others…it upsets that balance in their universe, but who said that your journey is about them.

If you ever felt like giving up….

Words of wisdom for those who have been made to feel inadequate in life…

Our Deepest Fear

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Really…

Ever had someone that constantly shot themselves down and look to others to validate their failures? No matter what the situation…they just self destruct; sad :( ran into an old friend in D.C yesterday and saw that he had gain weight…I didn’t comment on it but he did and immediately began tearing himself apart as to why he gained weight and how hard it is to get it off and the whole 9 yards… As he went on something that hit a nerve..he said that noone takes his weight loss goals serious; to which I said "why should they…you don’t!" he started getting all upset and I said "stop looking for others to validate you." He said that he was hitting the gym hard, but was still hitting the all you can eat buffet just as hard…what do you think is going to happen when you only use half of the weight loss equation? Rather than giving an outlet for execuses I simply said…It is up to you to take your health seriously; nobody can do it for you. I am all for giving support to people wether it is on this site or in life, but I can’t do the work for you.

The road to fitness is not an easy one; on the surface it looks easy just look at the cover models on your favorite fitness magazine or some of the members on this site…only if it was that easy.  Falling off of the fitness wagon is to be expected for whatever reason: family, the job or life in general…it happens. My failure has always been developing a complete fitness plan…not just hitting the gym, but having a diet and supplement plan. In the past I just took what was popular with the guys in the gym or whatever was hot in the industry. Without a complete fitness plan I saw my progress stall and my goals forever changing… I call it fitness dyslexia (no focus) I said that out loud.  Nutrition is a big hurdle, because I like food that sabotages my progress…heck I even said in the past moderation is the key (yes I am a hypocrite) but that mantra doesn’t always work by just doing it every now and then.  I could go on and on about where I fell short or how I will do better in the future, but the point is for me to figure out where I am are going and get the necessary tools that will get me (not the other guy) there. I am out
