Functional Muscle

NinjaBill’s tag line reads “Real Men Have Mass!”  true words, but damn!!!! It comes at a price…In my line of work being able to run 2 miles in a certain time limit is a a must. On a great day I can pull 14:00mins flat but I feel every inch of those two miles (LOL). What the hell does this have to do with mass…well everything!!! Be it muscle or fat it takes effort to move it. See the Army’s physical fitness test works like this (if you don’t know already) 2mins for pushups, 2mins for situps and a 2mile run. After knocking out 80pushup and 80 situps…running is the last thing on my mind…freaking hip flexors feel like jello, lower back is in a knot..and the blood hasn’t return to my triceps yet and you want me to run…no problem. Did 2miles in 15:30 not bad for an old fart. If you have mass and you can move it..it is functional  muscle (muscle mass not fat) Think I am going to change my blog’s name to “RUN FAT BOY RUN”…oh yeah this blog in way endorses the paper doll effect..get your damn weight up.

So I am in the gym today working the shoulders, and feeling like stir fried crap (starting to get sick…) when this young lady walks up and start a conversation regarding weight loss; so she is going on about all of the different diets and programs that she has done in the pass, but never really kept the weight off…so now she wants to try weight training. I say ok…like who am i to turn someone away from the weights…then she says but I don’t want to gain any muscle…I just want to be tone…what? tone…what the @#$? is tone? who the hell invented that term? i want to get tone! sorry not possible…when you lose weight your muscle will surface…it is there; its just covered with fat. So she goes on and on about how muscle on a woman (insert long pause here) what? huh? are you serious, but being a size 2 is? look to esach their own, pic up this month’s copy of REPS…there is an article on a lady name Mandy Blanks (i think that is here name) and she is a stunna. Sorry I am a sucka for a woman with muscle…ask my wife (hehe) she got a little uoset when i told her this but it is the truth as I see it. when you weight training and do cardio you will lose burn fat and gain muscle and the muscle you gain will weigh more than the fat that you lose…unless you become a cardio bunny and start looking like a marathon runner (heck they even have some muscle definition) in a parting I told her…these are just my thoughts…and you gonna do what is best for you…just remember when you move iron…you build muscle…not get tone

Just as I get settled in to working the night shift they decide to put me back on the day shift…ok enough with the knee jerk reactions. One benefit to working the day shift is having access to a better gym :) (See how long this lasts) anyway here is today’s numbers:

Shoulders and Traps.

Over Head Press (behind the head)> 15×95/15×115/15×115/15×95

Wide Grip Upright Row> 12×85/12×95/12×105/12×115

Leaning Lateral Raise>15×15/15×20/15×20/15×20 (dumbbell)

Bent Over Lateral Raise> 12×15/12×20/12×25/12×25

Shrug> 12×180/12×270/12×360/12×270

Barbell Shrug> 12×135/12×225/12×135/12×225

The above workout had my forearms screaming…but my traps and shoulders were good to go.

Finished the routine tonight by running 4.11 in 30 minutes…legs are shot…body needs rest and I feel great.
