Yikes!

Spent 4 days in Vegas (good food!) and worked out 4 days last week - weight is creeping up!  Not sure what is going on here but need to reverse quickly!

Going to reweigh - see what happens after lunch.

Doing more Interval training with weights - 15 reps 4 set working up to about 60-70% of max at 8-10 reps.  Definetely getting sore after workouts, better pump and all that - that it was working before stepping on scale!

HIT

Did leg routine - working to monitor down time (30 sec max) and did 15 reps - about 60%.  Legs not as sore as very heavy days - but definitely felt like motor continued running longer.  Will try with upper body and on treadmill next week.

Weight dropped a bit but think that is just normal up/down.

Sneaks up on you

That 8 months flew by!   Was a tough year waterskiing - several serious injuries.  On top of everything was in gym recuperating in late October - and overdid back pulls, apparently injuring tendon (?) in right arm!

Have been going to gym since but didn't do weights until Jan.  It is slowly returning to normal.

I'm giving up on gaining muscle mass just to much for my body type.  Just going to focus on toning and defining what I have - accepting that I'll never have 23" biceps.

weigh crept up over Holiday's - I'm going to work to whittle that back down.  I know a lot of middle aged guys want to lose  body fat - but I'm already fairly active and eat relatively healthy.  Sigh - maybe I have to give up some wine.  Any suggestions?

Waiting on summer!

Waiting on summer!  Still going to gym - 4 days a week!  Have only been waterskiing 3 days this year!  Supposed to be in a tournament next week - but with new ski and little skiing still not ready - to embarass myself.

At gym - backed off of arms to allow tennis elbow time to clear, but have started that back up.  For leg routine - just going to 9 plates a side on incline - knees like it, will ramp back up to 12 plates a side this fall after skiing.  Back is getting wider.

Still chasing a bit of stomach fat - just can't clear - and I'm not buying that it's due to my age.

OK - will post some pics.

Not a good combination

Doing a heavy back day Friday evening and then playing tennis on Saturday morning didn't work out so well. Back was SO tight - didn't loosen up for at least an hour on court. Wanted to do weights - not aerobics (that's what tennis is for right?) need to come up with other workout pre - tennis.

Muscle gain

No i don't have 22" arms - I never will. My wrists are thinner than my wifes. But I definitely keep adding muscle - I resolve to measure this spring.

Back is much improved - I'd been doing close hand low back cable rows - went to wide hand - what a difference I feel on lats!

Going back to less/heavier weights for legs. Tonight did 10x14plates, 10x16, 10x18, 8x20 plates on incline leg press - minimal cheating.

I do want to drop some fat around mid section - but I'll keep reading how others are doing it.

Still working it

I've lost 3 lbs this Thanksgiving week - and .5% body fat - watching portions and working out daily. I'm back to 22.1% body fat so will work on that over next couple of months. Going to continue to work legs but want to increase upper body strength - specifically back and arms.

Finally - tangible benefit from lifting!

I finally did it! After many years in a gym, unknown cans of protein powder, I finally succeeded in seeing an actual benefit to lifting - I was mountain biking.

For the last year I've been diligently working on building strength in legs. As a measure, I started with 3 plates a sided (4x10) reps. The last two weeks, I've done 7,8,9 x10 and last 2 weeks have been doing 10 plates a side for 6 reps.

Going up several hills this Saturday, I was able to up the gear a notch or two and just power on up! Amazing! I'm sure end of spring mtn biking season helped - but as bikers say - I've got legs!

My weight is the same (205 or so), no increase in bodyfat, and I now need to wear the relaxed fit jeans for space on my thighs!

Cool huh?!! Really nice to see this - motivates me to get stronger for water skiing season starting up.

Waiting for Spring - I think...

Still going to gym 3-5 days a week. Work has played havoc with schedule. I generally do 1 day of aerobics, then one day of arms/chest, and a leg day at a minimum. My weight is down to 196, so I'm going to give up aerobics, change to just 3 sets of a given exercise, and shoot for lower reps.

My legs keep increasing, and my arms are slowly building back strength from not focusing on them last summer and fall.

I'm trying to get in mtn biking when i can, good for balance and it's fun. But it's been so wet her in Northern CA this winter - could be worse I guess.

Back at it....

Months fly boy don't they?  I've been so busy at work have neglected this and just barely managed to keep up iron movement.

Started working on arms and chest after skiing - only cause they are holding back dev of back.  Arms and chest don't help me in sports - they just look better right?  I find I have to do rotator cuff exercise band things to keep right shoulder from getting sore.

Back is stronger than last year, but don't know if better looking.  On legs, I'm up to 9 plates a side on incline leg press (8 reps).  I'm about ready to start on 10th plate.   I need to keep increasing but have been getting in gym so late just no energy left.

Weight is down -and silly fat gauge from bathroom "stand on type measurement" show little progress.  I can't afford to lose muscle - have to eat more I guess.

End of Summer - almost

I took off from weight focus to finish skiing. Now that that's about (yep - waterskiing this weekend), will get back to weights. I've kept up twice a week for legs and back. I really need to get back to working on arms - at this point it's really holding up back development. Although I've had to miss several weeks here and there for work, I'm still doing incline leg presses with with 8 reps and 18 plates - so my leg strength has definitenly increased. Myback is alsobigger - especially upper delts.

Went on mountain bike ride lastweekend -I forget how tough on body waterskiing is!

Another long week...

I don't read many blogs at this site, so I don't know if this is common.  But how do we manage to get any personal time in these days?  I'm still employed (thankfully) but am putting in so many hours the weeks just roll by.  My weekends are jammed with waterskiing - where does the time go?

I'm managing to get in 2 visits to gym this week.  Heavy legs yesterday, and back today.  I won't be working out or skiing until Friday now - but of course I'll put in plenty of time working.

Yes, I'm whining, I'll stop.

Got a new personal best in skiing last week.  And tournament this weekend.  I haven't entered yet - too chicken I guess.  Methinks time to man up.

Forced PTO day

Does anyone else work for a company that is mandating that your PTO accrual not exceed a certain (in my case 80 hours) limit?  Seems like a twist to the employment agreement to me but....

So I'm on a PTO day today to get my number of hours down.

Working for a few hours this morning before heading out to lake for skiing - looks like a great day.  Still recovering PB after starting to use new bindings and ski - hopefully this weekend I'll be back to where I was.

Gym usual 3 times this week.  Monday 30 mins of aerobics, Tues is heavy leg day, Wed is back and deltoid day.  Note that I'm not doing arms this summer.  I feel like tri's get enough workout during back in the summer - and I really can't stack another workout in with skiing on both weekend days.

Rest of summer

After new PB's in waterski course, I'm still not making progress in weight room.  I guess I should be doing a better job of measuring progress.  Measure what's important right?  I'm cranking the protein shakes - 2 a day when I ski, so not losing weight like usual.  I'll begin the long haul thru rest of summer - have new ski and bindings ready - need to hit my goal on course this summer so I can shave beard (deal with wife).

New bindings - maybe hurting back knee.  Will see if leg press holds up into next several weeks.

Sometimes I wish I'd have stuck with tennis - so much easier to go play a set.

Boring week

Work is killing me with long hours.

Did same routine as prior week.  1 aerobic session, 1 heavy leg, 1 heavy back.  I'm going waterskiing today and tomorrow so will need to pack on protien powder drinks to keep from losing more weight.

On back, did bent over row with 8 reps 150 lbs.  Not my back, but my arms that won't do more.  I do lawnmower pulls with 4x8 x 70's with minimal problem at end of set.  Do wide pull downs from 170-240 8-10 reps per 4 sets and same weight on rows - again same problem on rows is arm strength.  But I guess it all needs to work together.
