Of course you can do it, you just have to train smarter instead of harder. Remember rest is good! muscle can only repair and grow when we rest.

Its good to hear the feeding tube is working, and that you are gaining weight as this will help with the gains.

If you need 2 or 3 days rest between workouts cool all the more time to grow strong.

You may want to look at Starting strength by Riptoe, you'll have to adjust the program so you get the rest you need start light, learn good form, and do no more than 3 compound excercises per workout to a maximum 3 sets of your 5 rep max, this should point you in the right direction.

Good luck eat Big and dream Bigger, paitance and brains will bring the results you what.

Hi! My personal feeling on that--i'm a nursing student--is that you should stick with eactly the diet ordered by your primary MD, and increase your exercise. The thing about reducing your intake when you're NPO is that those cans contain more than just calories--there are vitamins and minerals there too that you need to be healthy. I'd say talk to your doctor about it before modifying the plan they've come up with for you, as well as seeing what they think about your goals in relation to your recovery from illness. If anything, increased effort in the gym is going to require more calories, not less. Best wishes to you, and congrats on becoming a new dad :)
