HIIT and I

We just can’t get a steady thing going. I am struggling BIG TIME to complete my planned sessions. They are typically 15 short intervals or basic variations and it takes me so long to catch my breath, I am not starting up the next sprint when I am supposed to. Therefore, the philosophy that HIIT is tougher but takes less time for cardio sessions doesn’t apply to granny here in IL!  LOL…..I feel like I am failing with these. But I will keep trying…I am waiting to see my body change like the 99% of people I read about here that swear by them.

With me and my hiit, I try to stay true to my rest time, even if it means doing fewer intervals. I also use my first high intensity interval as a base line, and if I faulter too far from that base line then I also call it quits. My goals are much dfferent than yours. Good luck reaching your goals.
enjoy your journey as you keep moving forwards.

    Amy, I know exactly how your feeling…. I hate running, I hate cardio, I hate treadmills… I mean, I love running, I love cardio, I love treadmills…

You can do this… look at everything else you’ve done and know that this is just another hurdle…

How long are your sprint intervals? And how much time are your "catch your breath" intervals (can’t think of the name, LOL).

Maybe making a slight adjustment on the time limits for both would help.

  7. ShanBL Says:

Oh, and how many calories are you burning per cardio session?

  8. amysuds Says:

I do different intervals all the time Shan. Sometimes it’s 30 sec sprint, one minute walk. Sometimes it’s just a quick 15 sec sprint with less than a minute rest. Regardless…it takes me over a minute to catch my breath no matter what I am doing after I do a few in a row. I typically average 10 cal burned per minute with the warm up/sprint/cool down average. It’s also the same amount I burn for regular cardio sessions. So if I burn 300 in 30 min…I am happy with that.

so funny i just started adding two hiit cardio bouts to my week. i already have been doing an hour a day of steady but not easy cardio for years now so i didn’t want to add time obviously, so i opted to take twenty minutes of my hour two or three times a week and make it hiit… i felt like i’d been hit with a truck monday when i did it! i don’t know for sure but my understanding of hiit was that as long as you are hitting the high intensity parts before you totally catch your breath it is the right level for where you are at and the time doesn’t matter so much, and will improve with time (of corse!… that’s what i love about the gym… the more time and effort you put in, you see the improvements!!) i just let the eliptical control when i had the highs/lows this week, but sometimes i pick it myself too. i think the machine is full of bs cause it says i burn the same is if i’d just gone at a level between the high and low where i normally would for a steady pace workout and i KNOW i’m sweating way worse and i am way more whooped at the end! i have read so much good about the hiit training too, so i’m hoping to see some changes with it as well, though i don’t expect to see anything till i can cut the friggin peanut butter addiction!!!! it’s so creamy! :) hehe

keep us posted on how this is changing for ya!

One type of workout that I had my son doing while trying to both cut weight and condition for wrestling was to put in 2 minutes sprints at a very steep incline, in between excercises.

So, he would do several sets of heavy squats, then go sprint. Then walking lunges and then go sprint, etc.

He was really able to cut his weight down a ton this way, and it wasn’t an long grueling cardio session (or didn’t seem like one to him)
