Health Care Reform….UUUGGGGHHHH!!!
Monday, November 2nd, 2009It should not be a surprise to anyone that our health care industry is out of control. Over 47 million people are uninsured today and is increasing on a daily basis. There are many reasons for this catastrophy:
- An aging society. The babyboomers are getting old and begining to consume alot of healthcare resources
- Employer sponsored insurance was the primary source of insurance for many people, but with increasing premiums even the employers are having a hard time providing their employees with insurance…and our premiums are increasing in leaps and bounds! Who can afford the ever increasing premiums? Many employees can afford can’t afford the employer sponsored insurance
- People are losing their jobs….and insurance….and homes
- Government insurance is bursting at the seams as more people are beginning to qualify for medicaid and the babyboomers are beginning to qualify for medicare.
- I won’t even start my mantra about the many ilegal aliens that consume tons of our health care resources.
- Ever increasing prices set by the insurance and phamaceutical companies
- Unsurmountable costs associated with technology
- Process foods are the staple of many of our diets because it is cheaper to get, taste good, and is convenient. It is cheaper to eat Mac Donalds than it is to fix a healthy meal…and we are a society of convenience!
- As a nation we are getting fatter, and thus sicker, and thus utilizing more healthcare resources at a younger age
- As a nation we are sedentary slugs sitting before our computers and DVR’s and stuff. Our children are sedentary and getting fat
Where is our role in this crisis? Well, it starts with accountability for our health. We should be held accountable for our actions. As a nation we need to focus on PREVENTION OF CHRONIC HEALTH CONDITIONS!! I totally support taxing the hell out of tobacco products and alcohol. If it were left up to me, I would make a pack of cigarrettes $20 a pack…because I am going to have to pay for the smokers health care on the backend. Same with alcohol. I would increase the price CONSIDERABLY on all processed foods and substancially lower the price on fruits and veggies. For any individual who wants to live a unhealthy life style, he must pay for his choice…on the front end because the tax payers will surly pay for it on the backend (consumption of health care resources).
Children would be required to have 1 hour of physical activity in the school day. The hell with home ec and studyhalls…even if the school day was extended an hour…so be it!!
I can go on an on about this…..but I best be getting my butt to the gym!!
