Early mornings, Wii’s and other thoughts.

December 27, 2008

Christmas came early in my house, the kids were up at the crack of early, waking me and Gorgeous out of our long winter’s naps.  They raced down stairs and after a less than nutritious breakfast they began ripping open the packages–clothes in one pile, the good stuff nearby ready for us to open and assemble.

The biggest hit in our house was the Wii and the WiiFit. You’d think that with all the equipment in the gym, the last thing we’d need was anything "fit", but everyone has been using it– yours truly included.  Gorgeous has been using the "fit" for the past couple of days, and after a long hiatus from the workouts, she’s actually feeling the effects of the DOMS–from video game!!!

I’ve taken advantage of the spring like conditions in my part of the Great White North (50 degrees and overcast/rainy), and got out for an hour long run yesterday..it felt great. The roads were quiet, and mostly ice free, the air had a chill that still said winter, but the sight of green grass said maybe not for long.

New Years is just around the corner, so like all good trainers, I’m getting ready for the "Resolutionaries" to start calling. For now, I’ll take these last few days to relax, work on my own goals and work off that turkey dinner that I over-indulged in on Christmas.

Belated Christmas wishes to you all, and an early cheer of Happy New Year.

see you in the new year.

Of toes, fever, Mickey Mouse and doctors

December 12, 2008

Okay, so when I last left you I was lamenting about how foolish I was not working out with shoes, busting the toe next to my little toe (why only that one?).  Well in the week that followed, I eased out of my regular workout routine and started to chill– okay I got the chills, and the aches and one day didn’t want to even get out of bed.  Obviously my body wanted to start vacation before my boss was going to let me.  I powered through with tons of OJ and hot tea ready for the my last glorious week.

We (the gorgeous wife and I) packed up the kids and drove to Disney in Orlando for a few days.  Did I mention we live north of Toronto?  22 hours in the car just see a mouse??? You know what, it was worth it. My kids are at that age where magical things start to seem hokey, and it really felt like we needed this one last vacation to celebrate their coming of age from children to tweens to some fine adults to be.

What’s it got to do with bodyblogs and bb.com–you know, probably nothing at all, except because of the series of unfortunate events in the two weeks before, and during the vacation, I haven’t been to the gym in over 3 weeks. I went this morning, and I’m already feeling the DOMS.  Getting back in tomorrow as well.  Chest and tri’s today, legs and back tomorrow.

So I mentioned in the title "…and doctors".  Gorgeous has forced this arrangement upon me- if I don’t go for an annual check up, she won’t. Now not fully understanding the inner plumbing of the opposite sex, but knowing that it is important that they schooch to the end of the table every year, I have reluctantly agreed.  Yesterday was my turn.  First words out of my doctor’s mouth as he strolled in an hour late for my appointment was "16 pounds in the last two years–guess from working out?"  Damn straight it is, doc, damn straight it is.

Toes are useless

November 20, 2008

Okay, my first post and its a bit of a rant, sorry about that folks.

I was down in the dungeon -as my kids call it- last night, doing a light leg workout and mixing some stuff up.  Had the squats going, some weighted lunges and then I go and try some bench hops.  I’m rocking the form too– back is flat, hands in a good position on the bench, there’s actually some good music on the satellite tv radio station finally, and then it happened.

I lose my concentration for a second and blam- I don’t make it all the way across the bench and slam my foot down.  There is no sound other than the muttered profanity coming out of my mouth, but I know something’s not right–you just know.

So up I go to the freezer, grab the ice bag and plop it on my foot. I know I’ve broken my toe–hoped that I had just jammed it up, but no, its broken.  I wake up this morning to the throbbing and the beautiful array of colours on the toe beside my little toe–how’d I break just that one??  It hurts like a sommanabeach, and there goes the leg workouts, the treadmill and, heck, even walking normally for about a week.  Ugh.

Note to self–wear shoes in the dungeon from now on, and stay focused.

Its all life lessons, its all life lessons.

Welcome!
