You talk’n to me?

Monday, October 6th, 2008

One of the unexpected rewards of my improved fitness is the exchange I have with people inquiring about what it is I do that has helped me to start knocking down my fitness goals.  Recently, I have more people coming up to me in the gym asking me about my diet and training program.  In fact, it happen 3x the other week.  Often, they point out the fact that I am constantly writing things down (my journal – the plan).  Besides the fact that it is a flattering gesture, I get excited to share what I have learned with people as there is an immediate bond in that we are trying to make some sort of change to improve our lives through fitness.  Knowing that I may not look like the most approachable guy as I workout alone and tend to keep to myself (well, used to), I appreciate the fact that it may not be easy for them to walk up to me to start some dialogue.

However, it’s not just folks at the gym.  My coworkers have seemed to taken some interest as I am often asked questions about my eating habits.  Over time, they have seen how disciplined I’ve become and are curious to know more.  In fact, my boss has talked with me on a few occasions about eating frequently during the day and started making changes himself.

I am delighted, now that people have started coming to me to talk about healthy eating and fitness.  This is because I normally keep quite about it unless someone asks as I don’t want to be “that guy” who is a blow hard preaching about how clean they eat and how hard they train and how everyone else is doing it wrong and will die an early death.  I am not here to grandstand but to achieve my fitness goals and learn how I can apply that success in other areas of my life.  I am learning that this can be an infectious positive influence on other people’s lives and that is a great reward.
