Are Gym Employees And Trainers Morons?

Last weekend I saw the new movie, Burn After Reading. I love Coen brothers movies (Fargo, No Country For Old Men), and this movie was pretty great too.

This movie is centered around a few employees of a small gym. Each person that works at the gym is not exactly portrayed as an Einstein. In fact, Brad Pitt plays a personal trainer that is a complete idiot, even though he’s full of energy and enthusiasm for life. He’s lovable, but in a child-like way.

That got me thinking… why does the media portray personal trainers and bodybuilders as idiots? It seems to be common knowledge that muscle-bound jocks are morons and personal trainers spend their entire day flexing in the mirror like Hanz And Franz.

Hanz And Franz Are Going To Pump… YOU UP!

I know this isn’t true. If anything, science shows that people that workout and are fit are actually smarter and more creative than the average person. Countless studies show that cardiovascular exercise and a healthy diet makes you more intelligent by actually changing your brain. Bodybuilding teaches you discipline, goal setting, and focus. These are all qualities that a “smart” person has. To really get in shape you have to understand physiology, exercise techniques, nutrition, supplements and a thousand other theories and details. Have you seen how thick Arnold’s Encyclopedia Of Bodybuilding is?

But then I saw this sign in my gym today, and I had to wonder about at least one person that worked there…

What do you think? Why do trainers and bodybuilders have a bad reputation in the media?

Lmao that great. I think that personal trainers are portayed as idiots is because that it takes so much time and energy to get to that level of fitness that it takes up everything they do.

So ask them how can insulin effect your diet in positive and negitive ways and they can break it down to scientific terms but ask them about photosynthesis and they would probably be dumb founded. Not all but just the ones that are stereo-typed

    great blog man

Uh oh, LMAO. Yeah, that gym isn’t doing much good in promoting how intelligent PT’s and bodybuilders are.

But then there are a LOT of out of shape idiots out there too, so there you go.

Is CYLCE a new form of aerobics or something?

I think Shan’s got a good point, the stereotype of a group is created by a vocal minority not the majority. The stereotype of bodybuilders is one of arrogance and self love but we know that couldn’t be further from the truth. Also I wonder how many people who stereo type trainers have actually purchased these services…probably not many.

I think that those people with the most self discipline are very intimidating to the average person. Instead of complimenting their dedication and skills…I hear all to often how bodybuilders/trainers are SO conceited because they possibly have good self esteem maybe? The truth of the matter is….the easiest way to deal with being JEALOUS …is to put people down and talk crap. Unfortunately, there are alot of folks out there that are quite unhappy with themselves. It’s way easier to make fun of others instead of working your ass off just to feel better!

How can you stereotype a profession? I think you can find the smart and the dumb in any field out there. I have spent 4 months between doctors and Physical Therapy because I was misdiagnosed and the doctors refused to listen - doe that mean all doctors are idiots? No, but certainly some are.

On the other hand, I have encountered the extremely smart PT that can properly advise you on quality of life improvement and not only lowering your body fat or pumping those muscles. Of course, I have also encountered those that can’t spell, and those that don’t know how to teach within the boundaries of safe training.

As a successful bodybuilder I personally know what it takes mentally to prepare for competition. As Bodybuilders we have to have an educational background anatomy, physiology, psychology, kinesiology, orthopedics, and much more. The best knowledge you can gain is through experience and once you have accomplished your physical goal you have mentally accomplished immeasurable value! Bodybuilding has been very viral on all areas of my life. I am much more disciplined with my finances, family, and outside goals that don’t pertain necessarily to fitness. Freaking jealous people why don’t you just go out and get fit so we don’t have to get a bad wrap for your laziness. LOL

What you talking about? I go to my Cylce Class every week. It’s killer man.
