From my limited experience, it can be caused by::

1. Not warming up or stretching.
2. Improper or no breathing while exerting yourself. You must breath, don't hold your breath too long.

UPDATE on exertion headache relief. It was suggested to me to try a Valerian Root tea. It sounded "out there." After a 9 mile run Saturday, sure enough the throbbing monster headache came on. 3 hours into I was miserable. I went to Walgreen's and bought a bottle of Nature's Bounty Valerian Root capsules. At home I put a coffee mug of water in the microwave for 1 minute. Then I opened the capsule (one) and poured the powder into the cup and stirred. It has a strong smell, so I put in one packet of sweetner and stirred. I drank it. 15 minutes later I could feel the throbbing headache leave, much to my surprise. It later became just a dull headache and more tolerable. It was a blessing not to be bed ridden for 2 to 3 days w/a throbbing headache, and unable to be part of my family. I even managed to sleep that night. Normally, with the headache - the pain prevents sleep. So I will see what happens next Saturday after my 10 mile run. I am not a doctor, and not advising anyone, but, it worked for me. You may want to do your own research b/c there are some drug interactions with sedatives or anti-anxiety or anti-depressant drugs, so, educate yourself.

I have started getting exertion headaches after my runs training for marathon. I do not get them when I run indoors on treadmill for same amount of hours (2, 3, or more). Headaches come on 3 to 4 hours After the run - throbbing monsters that do not go away for 2 or 3 days. I asked my chiropractor about it but he does not believe it has anything to do with my neck. ??? Headaches can start anywhere and then spread out and I DO feel them at the base of my skull where it meets the neck. I tried a magnesium supplement but that didn't stop it. I read a 390 mg magnesium supplement helped a serious weight lifter. I've tried putting ice on my neck and head too - doesn't go away. Nothing seems to make it go away. It is frustrating and gets in the way of enjoying the exercise of choice.

Wow…great pic! I am looking across the female pictures for motivation, and yours does it. Thanks for posting. I hope one day I can be a motivator for some one. Keep up the good work. I am just beginning and I know very little. Do you have any tips for a beginner (diet or training)?

I'm not posting "sexy" lingerie shots or bent-over "look at my A$$ while I do hamstrings" pics!! Or the ever popular "how many ways can I show my cleavage"! Then I WOULD expect that. And this isn't some random site...it's a BODYBUILDING site, meant to show your hard work. ***Sigh***
