Nurseries in gyms…what are they for?

At a lot of gyms, including my own they have nursery rooms for children while their parents workout. So why is it that some kids can’t stay where they belong and the parents can’t control the little crumb gobblers? Don’t get me wrong, I love kids and admit its kinda funny when they start flexing in the mirror like the grown-ups do LOL…but when they get to running around, yelling and getting in your way, I want to shoulder press them and their parents….ugggh. I really love the parents that go to the kids and say, "now sweetheart i told you not to bother the nice people while they work out" …I wanna tell those parents, "man why don’t put one of those weight belts to that kid’s A$$.." LOL but i know not all parents do that. So parents do me a favor, please get the little ones under control or leave them with a sitter. Its also another safety issue for the gym owner also. That’s my rant for the day.

It’s not the parents fault Wayne. It’s the GYM’S fault. I take my girls with me, every once in a blue moon, on the occasional Saturday workout when my wife’s busy. The gym staff’s job is to actually watch the kiddies & keep them in the childcare area. If I found my girls wandering the gym (let alone running around!!), I’d be all over the staff for that.

I like the term "crumb gobbler"…..never heard that one. :D

That is true Al to an extent. Ultimately the kids act like the only person that can tell them what to do is the parent. I think it would help if the parent told the kids to listen to the staff members and if you don’t there would be consequences later at home.

I LOVE the term crumb gobbler!! And I think it’s the gym’s fault AND the parent’s fault depending on the situation. If the gym staff isn’t watching the children, well it’s their fault. If the parent’s are using the room and letting their child run around, well then it’s the parent’s fault.

Yeah, it’s the gym’s nursery staff’s job to watch them. My wife and I used one of those at the Y years ago. They were good about keeping the kids in there, but they reduced the childcare hours, so it became pointless to go to the gym.

I believe it’s the fault of both parties. I work at a Y and some parents don’t pay for "mini care" or "youth lobby" so they bring their kids with them with is a policy no no unless they are a certain age and then they are allowed to use the cardio or weigts if they are of age. If we catch kids out of line or without their parents or doing inappropriate things we immediately find the parent. Also if there is a complaint we respond imediatly and take care of it. I’d say a majority of the time it’s the parent not following the rules and getting caught. Sorry to hear the gym childcare SUCKS! I’d complain!

I eventually will. I want to look ou for the children’s safety more than anything else. We all know what happened earlier this week with Mike Tyson’s daughter and that tragedy. I really don’t want to put any particular group on blast but someone has to step up and take responsibility

LOL Funny but you make a good point . When I was in NM the gym I worked out at had a nursery for children but it was like its own litlle room and it was a cardio room. Lots of elipticals , bikes and treadmills, and body bands and mirrors and in the middle there was a kid corral all the kids stayed in. ( it was fenced in) Children werent allowed to leave and parents weren’t allowed to leave the children in there unattended. Great Idea to have it fenced in and confined to one area, I love children but not while I’m trying to work out. Maybe they can incorporate something like that or similar where you’re at?

I say its the gym…the YMCA where I work out has lots of kids all under lots of adult supervision….none are allowed in the training area…..it is really dangerous for small children to b e in the training area…I’d talk to management about the liability issue…..

LOL, i love my girls! I have a full weight room and cardio equipment here, at home, and we even built a play room for them in the "Gym room" so can I close it off while I workout! It is hard enough to work out hard with adults talking to ya much less little kiddos running around and picking up weights! Not to mention the risk involved in them getting hurt! It is awful to hear about Mike Tyson’s 4 yr old daughter last week, DH and i decided to lock the door and set stricter rules for the girls for the "Gym room"! Safety is a huge issue with this! If you didn’t know about Tyson’s 4 yr old DD it was a tragic fatal accident in his Home Gym! Gym’s that let kids roam better watch their tails!

PS. Remember to pray for Tyson and his family!!

I’ve never seen any kids running around outside of the babysitting area in my gym but I do think that sounds like pretty bad management if it happens often…one dropped weight on a little foot should do the trick…oh, but wait…then you’d probably end up on the news or something…lol
