For all who still don’t know what healthy food is:
I just read a post from a friend here about people not doing their research but wonder why things aren’t working. I saw on the Today Show when Jillian Micheals, The training superwoman from what is becoming my favorite reality show "The Biggest Loser", said during an interview…" If it doesn’t have a mom or come from the ground, don’t eat it!" and after reading the book "Natural Cures" I realize that the best way to get back in shape and feeling well all of the time is eating all natural foods. That means 100% natural. Foods that are not processed or made in a factory. I went to a food store that was a co-op and all they sold was organic food, which meant it was planted or raised with no chemicals or preservatives injected in them. Now that also means that it costs a lot more than the other foods, but at this point, its worth it to know that if i pay a little extra money its worth it. And I also learned that the food is not bland or tasteless, in fact it tastes better. So like my friend said in her post, DO YOUR RESEARCH!!

Just be careful, there are lots of loop holes in the term "organic". Also I have seen a lot of food that is unhealthy that is called "organic". In other words it was full of sugar, simple carbs, salt etc. Avoid those types of foods even if they say "organic". marketers are notoriously bad for slanting the truth (or outright lying) and the term organic is a marketing term.

Thats a very true statement. It’s not hard and can be inexpensive once you find your groove. I found that it was more expensive for me at first but once you find what you like and can eat on a daily basis, I think it gets cheaper than buying your ‘normal’ processed foods.
1 Frozen Pizza (1 r 2 unhealthy meals) = $5
vs
1 box Talapia (atleast 6 healthy high protein/low fat-n-carb meals) = $12-$15
Decent brand quick Canned meal (1 decent meal) = $2-$3
vs
1 pack Tuna (another high protein low fat-n-carb meal)=$.70-$1.50
Instead of buying chips for a snack, buy Nuts- about the same price.
I could go on forever but people do need to realize that whole foods are broken down and used by our body WAAYY more efficiently than processed foods. This leads to a more efficient metabolism and increased overall health for your body.

No doubt about it bwestgat. That’s why i say research. That’s why you read labels and know what you’re reading. I have learned a lot about knowing what i’m getting.

Also to Bwestgat, sugar is organic and is needed by the body to function properly.
Instead of avoiding sugar all together, or simple carbs at that, rather understand WHEN to eat them. I can make a 20oz Mountain Dew do the exact same thing as a serving of Brown Rice as long as I sip on that Dew for an hour or two.
I do agree ‘organic’ is a marketing term loosley used to lure health fanatics in, which is why I don’t pay much attention. Understand the different time periods during the day when to eat certain nutrients and keep it as Jillian said; "…" If it doesn’t have a mom or come from the ground, don’t eat it!"

If instead of "Sugar" you ment HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup), I retract my statement.
HFCS should be avoided and would redefine ‘organic’, be aware.

Yes I do mean HFCS, but I also try to avoid simple carbs like sugar except right after a workout. Everything bad for you tends to have a lot of HFCS or sugar so I avoid it as much as possible and it keeps me healthy.

Wayne…good blog…even though I take a lot of supplements…I have always had a vegie garden….and shop at the local farmers market when possible….

True dat Wayne! Whole foods are much healthier than processed foods. And cheaper in the long run. Mainly because whole foods make you feel full with less. Therefore you eat less volume of food with whole foods than you do with processed foods. Natural food stores make shopping with health in mind a LOT easier. I agree with Hatchet at first it seems more expensive and it is an adjustment in eating habits. But once you make that adjustment it will save you money.

While less healthy, I’ll stick with the premade stuff for one reason - I’ll use it. Those of us that loathe prep time, cleanup of dishes and such, or cooking in general would fail at any food plan where we had a lot of preparation. I firmly believe that the only reason I’m so successful with my new "lifestyle" as far as eating goes is finding fast and easy ways to make food that is far healthier. (Kudos to George Foreman and his grilleration, and whomever came up with the microwavable mixed veggies…)

I too love the book Natural Cures (something EVERY medical student should read!!!!) but I have to say I have a hard time fitting a lot of the info in there into my daily life… I’m busy and I live in a rural area with stores that tend to be low on the natural produce and high on the processed food. If I drive about 45 mins I can shop at a market that sells organic items and now that summer is here the local farmers markets (and my own garden) will be blossoming soon! I try to hunt AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE during the season to bag what I call the ultimate organic meat!!!
So… I try my best… (and this sounds like a lot of excuses ) but I do what I can!

Congrats on the new knowledge. Check it, I use to run not only high school track but college track and I NEVER knew what healthy eating was! When I got a job at an all natural specialty food store that’s when I learned what Organic, natural, and cage free where and the differences. i was fortunate to learn extensively about the seafood and meats because that was the departments I worked in. I know soooo many ways to cook various fish! If only more people knew! And I am not talking about fish high in mercury like tune! But I learned alot!
