Traveling

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Still driving, still being the traveling man.  Linked up with some old and new friends in Indianapolis so that was fun (although the hangover wasn’t)

Should reach the south in a couple days.  I’m feeling the humidity already.  I miss Colorado dryness.

New Beginnings

Friday, June 19th, 2009

I’ve left Colorado, left my old gym, and am part way through Kansas.  Headed for new assignments out east.

stay strong folks and remember…tuna in a can is better than oreo cookies on road trips!

Lift, Run

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Had a great Memorial Day weekend with family.

Got back and drove through a torrential downpour from the airport to the Fort Carson.  Not just drizzle drizzle, I’m talking cats and dogs.

So it’s 2am and what do I decide to do….lift.  Welcome home bud.

Skip legs? prepare for your runs to suck wind

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

So the last leg workout I did was last Thursday, yes nearly a week off from legs is a bad thing.  I kept making excuses and though I did occupy my time with studying and busywork there was no excuse for neglecting them that long.

I ran the local 5k race today in downtown.  23:30.  Decent time right? Especially for a guy who has to re-acclimate to the altitude due to being gone for 8 months at sea level.

Well let me tell you I felt like a pack-a-day-smoker running those 3.1 miles.  That sucks winds.  But worse was the realization that my leg muscles were tired!!! They felt heavy and out of sync, not strong and supple like they have the two previous weeks.  The heavy, weighted, sore feeling was a consequence of my neglect.  Even when I trained for a marathon in 2007 I still did leg workouts three times a week in order to keep them strong so they could endure the heavy mileage.

So for everyone who has ever neglected their legs, say it with me:

"I promise never to neglect my legs again.  If I do, I know that when I run I will be faced with pain, soreness, and heaviness of body and soul.  Hereafter, I will keep my legs strong and ready because without them I am nothing."

Stay strong folks….

musings of a guy who can’t sleep…

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

So I’ve had some trouble sleeping the last two weeks.  Not sure why.  anyways, this is what I’ve discovered….

Oh the things I’ve learned late night….

1) All Motorhead "Ace of Spades" videos on youtube ROCK!  Seriously, ALL of the them.  that is going to be my posing music when I compete…

2) If Motorhead is good, Rammstein is even better.  It should be a rule that you have to watch ‘Reise Reise", "Sonne" and "Stein um Stein" before going to bed.

3) ESPN Sportscenter never gets old (I’m watching it right now…for the 5th time).  Web gems, Top Ten plays, and hockey highlights….doesn’t get much better.

4) All the "male enhancement" commericials are over the top, way over the top.  When did this become such a problem?? Is it because are country has become a "fat nation" so as guys get bigger there penises seem smaller?

5) Family Guy is hilarious.

6) I *heart* Robot Chicken.  Bloody good fun.

7) Girls like guys with confidence….no wonder they date jerks or bad boys or a-holes…they’re confident.

8) I miss sleep

9) I miss breakfast

10) Waffle House is the best late night food.  Sweet tea is a must.

11) Youtube classic baseball highlights never get old.  Never.  Watch Kirk Gibson’s 1988 World series Game 1 home run.  10 min video that really illustrates what a long shot that home run was.  or Joe Carter’s walk-off in 1993.  or Matt Holliday’s fingertip plate touch face first slide in game 4 of the 2007 NLCS.

New music!

Legs and 5k

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Legs didn’t go too well today :( .  My knees were killing me for some reason.  I’ve been eating good and taking my glucosimine.  I don’t know what happened, because they weren’t like that last week….

5k run went well. Not used to running at this altitude but glad to be back at it :)

By the way, MET-RX Vanilla Meal Replacement shakes taste good!

Back to the old gym

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

It’s been a long 8 months but I sauntered into my old gym yesterday, still in uniform, still tired from two days of travel, and living out of my car for the moment.

The manager remembered me, and since I still paid dues while I was overseas I got a credit to the workouts while I’m still here.

Man does it feel good being back to the old gym :) .  Kids still taking karate lessons, wives and other women taking self-defense, and a group of varying ages taking MMA. And the rest of us doing the old school workouts with old school equipment.

Amen to all that! It’s good to be home!

Next time

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Friends…

Next time you hear from ole Viper1, I’ll be stateside!

Time to celebrate:)……first  stop upon arrival, my old 24-hour gym.

Good luck to everyone and godspeed!

Holiday lifting

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

Happy Easter to all.  God is definitely good.

I don’t know why I get this urge but I’m going to do what I’ve done just about every holiday (birthday included) for the last 8 months.

BIG LIFT.
