Deployed; dieting in the desert (1) protein question!

Last night was my day off weight lifting.. However I did my cardio which I do everyday! I have to get those abs out somehow!! I had my best run time ever. Its not fast but it is my best 3.4 miles in 32 minutes. I have a question for anyone reading this. When is the best time to drink protein? Before or after a workout? I go to sleep soon after I workout by the way, does that make a difference? I don’t want my body to store the protein as fat, so I have been drinking the protein shakes about 15 minutes before I go lift weights. Tonight at the gym is ARMS! I can’t wait I LOVE LOVE LOVE working out! Diet today Remember I am deployed to the desert! Finding healthy food is not always an option!

I drink water all day LOTS!!! unless i list otherwise.

Breakfast: 1/4 cooked oat meal with 1/2 tbls sliced almonds, 1 tbls raisins, and 1 packed brown sugar; 2 slices whole wheat toast with 1 tbls peanut butter on each. Orange Juice

Snack: Craisins Trail Mix Cranberry and Chocolate! 230 Cal.

Lunch: Tuna packet Chex 100 claorie snack mix (chedder)

Snack: South Beach Diet High Protein Cereal Bar

Snack: Craisins Trail Mix Fruit and Nuts 210 Cal.

Dinner: Tuna pack and protein shake

after weight lifting the body needs to replenish glycogen and it needs protein to help repair the muscles.drink post work out.

  2. Biceptual Says:

The body does need glycogen after a workout but glycogen and protien are 2 seperate things. Glycogen is derived from carbohydrates which should be consumed directly after workout to replace glycogen stores in order to supply the muscles with the energy needed for recovery. After your carbo uptake, follow it up with your protien. What I sometimes do is mix the protien with some powerade right after because the powerade is fast and will reach the muscles before the protien.

i usually intake ctyogain or abb’s blue thunder.though you might not want to do the blue thunder due to the caffiene content.i work out midday.

Read Dr. Hussman’s fitness page on nutrition.
For the protein drink it immediately after, also 1 hour before. A bare minimum of 1gram per pound. If you are lifting and running don’t worry about the weight If you are lifting and running like you said it is not an issue. Otherwise calorie count after you check what your BMR is. The website has BMR calculators.

I drink protein shakes with in 30 mins after a workout as well as late at night before bed. Also I usually have oatmeal with one scoop of protein in it for breakfast. The general agrred best time would be after as a post workout shake. Also throw in some oats!

According to Milos Sarcev and Chuck Rudolph, both trainers/dieticians to top bodybuilders, the best time to drink protien is during your workout. I’ve been doing this for over a year now and have had great results

  7. JaruebaT Says:

Well every answer you got is somewhat right. Protien intake will work best in two cases. During your workout you should sip on a protien shake. This will actually slow muscle breakdown during your workout and keep your body in a anabolic state. You don’t need a ton during workout so about 20 grams during workout and finish about 15 minutes before your done training.
After workout is probably the most important of the two times because your body can absorb your nutrients better at this time. You want to replenish glycogen levels(sugar) and protiens. Use fast acting sugars and fast absorbing protien(whey). Try putting a couple of scoops in some gatoraide. Long as your using a fast absorbing protien post workout there is little chance of you storing it as fat.

I have been doing my own research as well on that topic and the best time is after you workout within 30-1 hr afterwards…

I was going to write you a big long detailed message explaining why you need to take protien during and after your workout. But, Jarueba T. said it all.The only thing I would like to add is that you body does not store protien as fat. It is not an energy source. But the calories matter in the overall daily picture of total calorie intake. Because your body still has to process those calories. The only time the body will use protein as energy is when there is no other readily source (sugar, fat). It’s called atrophy. (very bad) Good luck and stay safe.

  10. Deft_Soul Says:

as everyone has stated, after is probably best. But Jarueba T. has definately wrote a good reply. Your training looks great. Best of luck to your future health

  11. ishock17 Says:

After your workout, your body is depleted of Glycogen(carbs) and your muscles are worn out. Protein would be best immediately after your workout, but not too much. your body will replenish itself and store the rest if you have too much. Just enough to get you to the chow hall. how much is too much is up to your body to decide :)
