Happy Birthday?

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Yesterday was my Birthday I have been so busy I didn’t even realize it.

Lord Voldemort Lives! My 4th Yr. at Hogwarts!

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

As mentioned in earlier Blog entries in a effort to inspire my childrens reading habits and to help strengthen the bond with them by throwing myself headfirst into something that is of interest to them, I made a promise I would read my way through the Fantastical World of J.K. Rowling and the adventures of her little Orphan Wizard Hero Harry Potter and his friends.

I am proud to say I am closing in on the last few chapters of the 4th book Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Because of my extremely busy life as of late this book has taken me a bit longer than the first three but I am definately a Fan now and look forward to each chapter.

This has been a interesting journey as it has definately strengthened a connection with my children and given me a bit of an escape, growing up I was always into this type of thing and apparently I still am!

I only have several chapters of this book left and I eagerly awaite beginning the 5th installment.

Until then for anyone that reads this as always my whish for you is that you take the time to spend with your children, nieces, nephews etc. You have such an opportunity to impact a childs life in a positive way. I gaurantee the memories you create will last a life time and are priceless. I also gaurantee when you have made a child smile it makes you feel like a Hero!

Remember the joke that went like…?

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

A man goes to the Doctor. Man to Doctor: "Ya know Doc my shoulder really hurts when I move my arm like this!" Doctor to man: "Then don’t move your arm like that!" Ba rump bump!

It’s really two very simple principals which seem to allude most If you experiance pain it’s a signal that something is wrong. If what you are doing is painful stop.

We are not talking about discomfort here but actual pain, for some reason some people have a hard time grasping this as well. But that could be a topic all on its own merits.

Today while training the lower weight room was quite full and since this is where the free weights are and I wanted to do Barbell Curls part of my task was finding a place to do them.

Amongst all the other people milling about I found a place down at the end of the long Dumbbell racks in front of the mirrors and laid my Barbbell across the end of a flat bench which is my usual method for resting the barbell while doing curls (NO SQUAT RACK CURLS HERE!)

A woman was standing kind of off to my side behind me using another flat bench to do various Dumbbell raises, presses, upright Barbell rows etc. basically the whole gammit of shoulder exercises.

As I began my first set of curls I heard her say some thing put her barbell down and grab her shoulder. I finished my set waited a min to see if she was ok or just had a good burn going, she seemed ok and proceeded to do another set.

She stopped again and grabbed her shoulder which happened through each set of every conceivable exercise you can imagine and kept saying "Whoo Damn that hurts!" "Man that really kills!" "Jessus Christ!" etc. I surmised at this point it wasn’t just a good burn but her shoulder was really hurting as she only did this with one side.

As she did start her work out with Barbell Upright Rows and then really heavy Front raises I can only asume she has some inpingment issues if not worse but to make this even more sad of a state I completed my five sets of Barbell Curls left went to the Locker room put a few things away came back did forarms left again went to the locker room then went to the cardio room for about 30 Min of Cardio she was still training shoulders! about 5min before I finished my Cardio I see her walking through on the way to the ladies locker room having just finished one marathon shoulder session rubbing her shoulder all the way "Damn that hurts!" "Right freaking here Jesus!"

At this point I’d like to update the joke.

A woman goes to the Doctor………………………………..

A Love Story for the Ages!

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008
I just wanted to share this article, as it may truly be one of the greatest Love stories ever told.

MILDRED LOVING, MATRIARCH OF INTERRACIAL MARRIAGE, DIES

By DIONNE WALKER, Associated Press Writer Mon May 5, 4:17 PM ET

RICHMOND, Va. - Mildred Loving, a black woman whose challenge to Virginia’s ban on interracial marriage led to a landmark Supreme Court ruling striking down such laws nationwide, has died, her daughter said Monday.

Peggy Fortune said Loving, 68, died Friday at her home in rural Milford. She did not disclose the cause of death.

“I want (people) to remember her as being strong and brave yet humble — and believed in love,” Fortune told The Associated Press.

Loving and her white husband, Richard, changed history in 1967 when the U.S. Supreme Court upheld their right to marry. The ruling struck down laws banning racially mixed marriages in at least 17 states.

“There can be no doubt that restricting the freedom to marry solely because of racial classifications violates the central meaning of the equal protection clause,” the court ruled in a unanimous decision.

Her husband died in 1975. Shy and soft-spoken, Loving shunned publicity and in a rare interview with The Associated Press last June, insisted she never wanted to be a hero — just a bride.

“It wasn’t my doing,” Loving said. “It was God’s work.”

Mildred Jeter was 11 when she and 17-year-old Richard began courting, according to Phyl Newbeck, a Vermont author who detailed the case in the 2004 book, “Virginia Hasn’t Always Been for Lovers.”

She became pregnant a few years later, she and Loving got married in Washington in 1958, when she was 18. Mildred told the AP she didn’t realize it was illegal.

“I think my husband knew,” Mildred said. “I think he thought (if) we were married, they couldn’t bother us.”

But they were arrested a few weeks after they returned to Central Point, their hometown in rural Caroline County north of Richmond. They pleaded guilty to charges of “cohabiting as man and wife, against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth,” according to their indictments.

They avoided jail time by agreeing to leave Virginia — the only home they’d known — for 25 years. They moved to Washington for several years, then launched a legal challenge by writing to Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, who referred the case to the American Civil Liberties Union.

Attorneys later said the case came at the perfect time — just as lawmakers passed the Civil Rights Act, and as across the South, blacks were defying Jim Crow’s hold.

“The law that threatened the Lovings with a year in jail was a vestige of a hateful, discriminatory past that could not stand in the face of the Lovings’ quiet dignity,” said Steven Shapiro, national legal director for the ACLU.

“We loved each other and got married,” she told The Washington Evening Star in 1965, when the case was pending. “We are not marrying the state. The law should allow a person to marry anyone he wants.”

After the Supreme Court ruled, the couple returned to Virginia, where they lived with their children, Donald, Peggy and Sidney. Each June 12, the anniversary of the ruling, Loving Day events around the country mark the advances of mixed-race couples.

Richard Loving died in a car accident that also injured his wife. "They said I had to leave the state once, and I left with my wife," he told the Star in 1965. "If necessary, I will leave Virginia again with my wife, but I am not going to divorce her."
