Battle for the Olympia II: 1997

August 4, 2008

The second foray in to the precontest prep documentaries from Mitsuru Okabe, again as with the previous volume they havent quite found their stride with thier format but you can begin to see the subtle changes in the presentation of these documentaries.

Again not the typical documentary fair there is not much in the way of narration except for some brief voiceovers and interviews by some of the Pros in particular throughout the series you can always count on Shawn Ray to have something of interest to say.

More than anything these films give a glimpse into the contest prep for the pros preparing for that yrs Mr. O and while they do eventually follow all the competitors to the final venue and press conferance and maybe even a little backsatge these films contain no contest footage but do offer a montage of stills and they give a breakdown of the placings at the end.

general Synopsis from the DVD: The sheer power and strength of some of the planet’s best professional bodybuilders are on full display as they prepare to muscle their way to their sport’s highest honor. Oiling up and getting ready for the tough 1997 Olympia showdown are iron-pumpers

As thr previous volume this was filmed in both B/W and color ,not rated and filmed in full screen. I offer up this info more as a overview as opposed to a review, to each his own but a interesting look inside the life of the Pros none the less.

The Battle for the Olympia I: 1996

July 26, 2008

I have started watching the video series Battle for the Olympia. These DVDs are documentaries of a sort which follow the Professional BBs through their contest prep for the upcoming O each yr. I will refrain from making in depth critiques of the DVDs as I believe whether their style suits your taste or not they are an intersting watch as they give a glimpse into the lives of the Pros.

This particular DVD is filmed both in B/W and color and features interviews and training footage, there is no contest footage as these are all about the process leading up to the big day. This being the first DVD in the series they obviously had not quite got down the format but this is still as good a starting point as any for beginning watching this series.

Synopsis:Some of the world’s top professional bodybuilders pose and flex their way to the pinnacle of their sport in this full-bodied video featuring plenty of backstage action. Preparing to flaunt their fabulous physiques as they face off in the 1996 Olympia competition

Excuse me please! WTF!

July 9, 2008

Those of you who have of late encountered gym ettiqette faux pauxs, uh ok  BS from Dumb Asses!

Feel my pain I had another misguided individual mucking up my training again.

I was preparing to do Barbell Curls which I normally do by just laying the bar over the end of the flat bench so I laid my training log on the bench and removed my watch and laind it on the bench and I laid my wrist roller on the bech IE I filled the bench up with my stuff I was obviously using this bench!

Oh yeah did I mention I was 2 feet away from the fixed barbell rack?

At any rate I walked over grabbed the 95lb Barbell and turned around and there she was standing two inches directly in front of the end of the bench I was going to lay the bar across doing some half assed upright row type movement with a 15lb EZ Bar.

I am standing there with a 95lb barbell in my hands and she is still doing her weird little move in slow motion grunting with every rep! I could feel my face getting red and not from the strain of holding the barbell!

Excuse me please I sad and stepped directly in front of her inbetween her and the bench I should say and went right back to training.

I heard her mumble something and she moved away…. not far away but a couple of feet behind me and just kept doing her combo hang clean upright reverse curl crap move!

Good God! WTF! Come on is cadid camera following me around these days or what? You have got to be kidding me!

The amount of people who think the world owes them something or are entitled to something or who are just Ass Backward is obviously increasing!

Once again my little man who was in day care at the time was waiting patiently for me and as usual had so much to tell me about his adventure in the climbing castle that I simmered down pretty quick and realized the sun really was shining and it was a pretty good day after all!

Happy Independence Day!

If your shorts are that long why not wear pants?

June 24, 2008

In my haste to leave the house today I walked off and forgot my to pack my gym shorts, upon realizing my mistake I decided to stop by the mall and just buy a new pair so I wouldnt have to run back home then go back out to the gym.

I stopped at Sports Authority first and began a quest which seemed like Jason’s hunt for the magical Golden Fleece. It has become readily apparent to me that things have drasticly changed in the conception of what gym shorts or even just shorts in general are supposed to look like, I remember when most gym shorts and shorts in general came about mid thigh occasionaly maybe a few inches above the knee but they were unmistakably shorts now it appears everything from kinda sorta knickers, bloomers, basketball uniform bottoms, boxing trunks, clam diggers etc are the rage.

I swear I literally traveled to a half dozen differant stores trying in vain to find a pair of classic gym shorts and had one inane conversation with a salesperson after another.

I even had one try to tell me well "if a gentleman was particularly tall these wouldnt be so bad" (Yeah but we’re not all Shaq!) listen I don’t wanna look like one of the Beastie Boys or like I’m lookin for the lakers try outs I wanna pair of basic non restrictive gym shorts that dont hang below my knees or that is made of satin!

Finally I kinda found a workable pair at Target for $5.99 while I just may never wear them again they worked for today and at least I didn’t trip over them.

OK maybe I’m ranting a bit and maybe I put myself in that position by forgetting my shorts in the first place and maybe bigger is better in some instances but nothing will convince me of that when it comes to shorts!

Happy Birthday?

May 29, 2008

Yesterday was my Birthday I have been so busy I didn’t even realize it.

Lord Voldemort Lives! My 4th Yr. at Hogwarts!

May 28, 2008

As mentioned in earlier Blog entries in a effort to inspire my childrens reading habits and to help strengthen the bond with them by throwing myself headfirst into something that is of interest to them, I made a promise I would read my way through the Fantastical World of J.K. Rowling and the adventures of her little Orphan Wizard Hero Harry Potter and his friends.

I am proud to say I am closing in on the last few chapters of the 4th book Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Because of my extremely busy life as of late this book has taken me a bit longer than the first three but I am definately a Fan now and look forward to each chapter.

This has been a interesting journey as it has definately strengthened a connection with my children and given me a bit of an escape, growing up I was always into this type of thing and apparently I still am!

I only have several chapters of this book left and I eagerly awaite beginning the 5th installment.

Until then for anyone that reads this as always my whish for you is that you take the time to spend with your children, nieces, nephews etc. You have such an opportunity to impact a childs life in a positive way. I gaurantee the memories you create will last a life time and are priceless. I also gaurantee when you have made a child smile it makes you feel like a Hero!

Remember the joke that went like…?

May 8, 2008

A man goes to the Doctor. Man to Doctor: "Ya know Doc my shoulder really hurts when I move my arm like this!" Doctor to man: "Then don’t move your arm like that!" Ba rump bump!

It’s really two very simple principals which seem to allude most If you experiance pain it’s a signal that something is wrong. If what you are doing is painful stop.

We are not talking about discomfort here but actual pain, for some reason some people have a hard time grasping this as well. But that could be a topic all on its own merits.

Today while training the lower weight room was quite full and since this is where the free weights are and I wanted to do Barbell Curls part of my task was finding a place to do them.

Amongst all the other people milling about I found a place down at the end of the long Dumbbell racks in front of the mirrors and laid my Barbbell across the end of a flat bench which is my usual method for resting the barbell while doing curls (NO SQUAT RACK CURLS HERE!)

A woman was standing kind of off to my side behind me using another flat bench to do various Dumbbell raises, presses, upright Barbell rows etc. basically the whole gammit of shoulder exercises.

As I began my first set of curls I heard her say some thing put her barbell down and grab her shoulder. I finished my set waited a min to see if she was ok or just had a good burn going, she seemed ok and proceeded to do another set.

She stopped again and grabbed her shoulder which happened through each set of every conceivable exercise you can imagine and kept saying "Whoo Damn that hurts!" "Man that really kills!" "Jessus Christ!" etc. I surmised at this point it wasn’t just a good burn but her shoulder was really hurting as she only did this with one side.

As she did start her work out with Barbell Upright Rows and then really heavy Front raises I can only asume she has some inpingment issues if not worse but to make this even more sad of a state I completed my five sets of Barbell Curls left went to the Locker room put a few things away came back did forarms left again went to the locker room then went to the cardio room for about 30 Min of Cardio she was still training shoulders! about 5min before I finished my Cardio I see her walking through on the way to the ladies locker room having just finished one marathon shoulder session rubbing her shoulder all the way "Damn that hurts!" "Right freaking here Jesus!"

At this point I’d like to update the joke.

A woman goes to the Doctor………………………………..
