Losing your virginity should be magical, right?
If you’re prepared, it can be. If not, it can become a near-naked nightmare!
I’m talking about your photo shoot virginity, girls! A woman who wants to successfully break into the modeling business has to use her head just as much as her body. In my years of modeling, I’ve learned the hard way how to shift a shoot from good to amazing!
I consider myself a late bloomer to the fitness modeling industry. But, hey, I love flowers whenever they peek out! For many years I had thought of crowning the cover of a national fitness publication. Early on I merely considered it a fantasy of mine — somewhere in the category of owning a private jet and a chauffeured limousine.
But, at age 36, I decided I had nothing to lose and embarked into the realm of modeling as a hobby and a creative outlet. Being in front of a camera is fun, but, I soon learned it is also a job and hard work. You think all these bikini models are spontaneously beaming with joy while they fight the waves on a beach or are getting poked in the butt by rocks and seashells? You have to love what you’re doing, and, value the experience. That’s when those smiles become real. The camera spots a fake smile every time.
So, where do you start? With homework, of course! Bet you didn’t realize that models to homework — the stereotype is that they chew gum and exercise a lot. The best models constantly educate themselves with a background of the industry and its trends. Since you’ll probably be wearing one… do you know where the term “bikini” comes from? You should. If you’re serious about modeling, go look it up.
Researching the latest fitness and fashion magazines is just as basic as a stock broker reading the Wall Street Journal every day. You’ll constantly fill your mind with new photo ideas, poses, lighting and fashion. That kind of depth is required to be a pro.
Now, about your looks! Think you’re hot stuff? Beauty is common currency in this business. Just realize that even though you’ve been told how great “a look” you have for fitness and modeling, thousands of girls have been told that. And it’s probably true for all of them. So, why do some produce great images and others don’t?
In large part, it has nothing to do with the model! Chew on that piece of “humble pie” and you’ll see why the model is, at best, just half the ingredients to a great shoot.
Contacting a legitimate photographer is your first step. During all that time doing homework, you probably noticed certain photographers whose work you especially like. If your goal is to be published, focus on someone who is consistently published in various mags. This is work “you” actually see, not what the photographer is “telling” you he has published. Pick out your three favorites to start.
When you talk to a photographer, realize that the “interview” goes both ways. You both need to mesh in the personality department, because, without chemistry the photos will be flat. Yes, that’s right, shots of a gorgeous woman in a tiny bikini can be brutally boring!

A fun shoot is always the best shoot!
Chemistry is critical in producing exciting images. That’s especially true in my work. I can say without bias that my husband, Walter, is among the best fitness photographers in the nation. (I sure hope he doesn’t read this, it will make him even more cocky!) But seriously, the photos Walter and I produce are better than my work with any other photographer. We’ve been married 22 years, and, whenever we’re on a beach at sunset — great images are going to happen!
The biggest secret of great modeling? It’s really more about emotion than anything else. The energy you and the photographer put into the images, is what the viewer will feel.
Now, back to business. Always come to an agreement with your photographer before the shoot. Expect to pay your way and to pay for images if you’re new to the business. There are photographers who will trade for print (TFP) but always keep in mind you get what you pay for. And don’t expect a top photographer to be available when you want to shoot. The best tend to be booked, so, you need patience and persistence to get with the best!
Is this sounding hard, yet? It can be, and, it can also be about the most fun you’ve ever had. Now, let’s get back to work.
Remember the stereotype about exercise? It’s actually true. To make things tougher, today’s level of female fitness is better than ever. Look at shoots from 20 years ago and almost no women had abdominal muscles. It was skinny and sleek back then, which mostly required not eating. But now, being in the gym is part of the package. Flab is fatal. If you’re not at least near the best shape of your life, why get in front of a camera? Those images will follow you forever. And if you’ve sent images to your new photographer, you better be in at least that good of shape when they see you!
Be demanding on the details. That means don’t skimp on preparing your make-up, hair, fingernails, toenails and tanning. Everything should look fabulous. Viewers don’t just scan modeling photos, they tend to stare, so every detail will be analyzed. Don’t let yourself be second-best.
Before the shoot, work with the photographer to plan the session. What is the location? What kind of clothes? Time of day? Likely weather conditions? There’s lots to work out.
Don’t be afraid to ask the photographer for suggestions, and, give lots of your own. Most photographers love creative models and your input will show enthusiasm. Teamwork always produces the best images.
So, now you know how to make your "first time" a terrific time. What are you waiting for? Get started!

4:42 PM - 2008 Debbie Kruck Classic
I know you are all wanting to know how the show went….
It went GREAT! I am qualified for Nationals in Atlanta, November 21-22, 2008!
I placed 2nd in the open B figure class. For those of you who don’t have a clue….just means I competed in a height class. The B class is comprised of girls of a certain "height", any age. I continue to compete in open instead of masters (age divided classes). Knowing I more than likely will be standing next to some hot, 20 something bombshell makes me work that much harder. Talk about putting some fire under your feet!
I am thrilled with my show prep and completion. My goal was to lean out and keep the booty, I did it! Unless you have built muscle there, its very hard to lean out and keep a rounded tush!
Thank all of you for your never ending support, I love you guys!

One of the 3 down! Two more weeks to go before showtime!
This week I get a little cranky and tired, ask Walt! I swear those donuts aren’t just calling…..They are screaming my name!!!!
I have stopped my carb rotation and go more on a day to day basis. Looking and seeing how I feel.
* eliminated most carbs except 1 serving of oatmeal a day.
* no more beef, but have included salmom because I am really lean. My metabolism can get out of control from the around the clock eating. Not such a bad thing! Keeping some good fat in my diet keeps me a little fuller looking.
*In the am along with my eggwhites I replaced my 1 slice of Ezekiel with 1/2 a grapefruit. Omg! Does that taste good!
*I also bump my water up to a gallon and 1/2. This really helps tighten me up next week when I cut before the show.
Its 9pm! Bed!

Three Weeks Out
and……I feel GREAT!
I decided years ago that show prep is what I love , walking on stage is just icing on the cake. Icing! omg! Its happening! lol
Its been 5 weeks since I commited myself to my first show of the 2008 season. With the lack of show planning early in the year, I found myself with withdrawal symtoms. I love setting goals and reaching them. I love competing!!!!!
I love to “work” on a specific body part for an upcoming show. This time, it was my glutes. You know gravity can take over! I am happy with the results. I actually have more of a butt than I did when I was 20!
My diet is SUPER clean and as regimented as regimented can get.
I have eliminated my one cheat meal on the weekends.
Start my meals with a 5am alarm so that I get a total of 7 meals a day.
No fruit or dairy.
One beef day a week.
Carb rotating on a 4 day cycle.
These last 3 weeks are the hardest! Krispy Kremes start calling my name …..I swear!

A few things I told my clients today…..to keep them MOTIVATED!
Start with the end in mind. This is an interesting concept. Try it!
Progress is progress. No matter what the progress…its progress. It may not be what “you” expect, but is it ever?
Sometimes you have to take one step back to move forward 2! Its how we learn.
Its easier to take off 5lbs…..easier than 20, 30, 40! Remember that.
Hang that dress thats a size too small where you can see it daily. Don’t say “if I can get into that dress” instead see yourself already in it! Everyday see yourself in it and feeling great! Its just a matter of time. A positive attitude will carry you further than you think!
Think of your health goals as a conscious decision you are CHOSING. If you mentally make a note, “I choose to eat this way and workout”…..it NEVER feels like a chore.
You can never have too much motivation!
