A gift from my father-in-law

TDetroit

He used to be in the newspaper business, he was a columnist and a reporter.

I had a blog on carepages.com for the last week of her life and one week afterward. people posted comments.

the funeral home had a website and people posted comments.

the newspaper he worked at had a website with people posting comments

i asked her older sister to deliver a eulogy about her childhood and then I took it from there and told our love story in a eulogy.

there was the Obit he wrote and the history of her cancer from diagnosis to chemo to remission to the cancer coming back to the wasting away. her vacations: tennessee, disney, and our second honeymoon.

he put it all in a book with some pictures, and had books bound. He gave me 8. I love these treasures.

And the crowning touch. the cover was designed by Audrey’s sister’s daughter in her computer design class. Audrey and mine niece. It makes me cry happy tears to look at it.

Mayhem Fest

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

TDetroit

You may or may not have heard of it.  It is sponsored by Rockstar energy drink.
We had a show here in Detroit yesterday - and my sone dragged me to it.

The show started at 2pm with us waiting in line outside starting 1 pm.  We went in and my son found his T-shirt.  Dragonforce, the band he came to see.  they are from London and shred like crazy.  then he found another t-shirt for Disturbed.

We went and saw the fest sites, checked out a screamo band (that was unfortunate)

Then is rained

Then we went to see Five Finger Death Punch.  A good band.  2 songs sounded good - Shake the Pillars of Hell and White Knuckles.

Then we headed for the pavillion seats, just in time - because it rained  - a lot.

Mastodon came on.  Your apologies for me having to sit through that are welcome.

Dragonforce.  It’s a good band with good songs.  But I have to say the keyboardist and rhythm guitarist treat metal in a bit of a silly way.

Then we went to get pizza.  Here is where it get’s good.  Between the pavillion and the lawn is a walk area.  It was crowded.  We did the push and shove and got to the rest room area.  so we took that break and when we came out, the crowd had thinned.  We headed for the pizza line.  We were next to get pizza, and my son heard the band -Disturbed - announced.

Can you believe that rat assed bastard son of mine abandoned me to get the pizza on my own while he went  back to the seats to watch?

I did the dad thing and bought the pizza.  I headed back.  the folks on the lawn decided to have some fun.  remember it’s still drizzling a bit.  they started ripping the sod of the lawn and thowing it in the pavillion.  the folks in the pavillion started throwing it back.  dirt flying everywhere.  people running and holding their hand over the top of their beer (must protect the beer)

disturbed is a great band, with great music.  and the sod thing went on the entire time.  the folks in the pavillion started throwing it around and got it almost up to the stage.

finally.  the last band.  Slip Knot.  yup, the guys who wear the scary masks.  let me say.  that is some unbelievable s***!  Damn!  Talk about crazy.

… and  F bombs!  Now I know why I haven’t heard much of their music.  it can’t be played on the radio.  F this and F that, right in the songs, forget the concert talk.

9 band members.  2 guys who beat on beer kegs (sometimes with a baseball bat)  A drummer who started the show like some freak from outerspace.  The music can at time include rhthms that are musically … devoid of music.  when you put it all together, it sounds great and looks better.  a show like nothing you’ve ever seen before.

We headed home.  it was nice to put a tape in the deck and listen to some normal music… like Iron Maiden and Dokken

Nutritionist

TDetroit

So my friend in Milwaukee bought my wife a plane ticket and an appointment to a Phd Nutritionist in there.  This is the payback I get for sharing my lunch in High Screwel.  See, my best friends mom was a late shift nurse and a remarried widow.  Second husband is a great dad to not only her kids but me too.  Anyway, she’s a horrible cook.  so they always went to screwel with what we Italians call Mangia Cake food (they eat that bread that looks like cake).  So Suzanna (whose name used to be Suzy- and I still call her that) used to eyeball my lunch.  since I had an Italian boy lunch (I had more than three grown men could eat) I would always supply her with good food - plus it’s always cool when an older hotchick is sitting next to you for lunch.

so, fast forward all these years later, and Suzy is married to a doc in Milwaukee - and he’s doing WELL - my wife get’s cancer, and Suzy buys her an appointment with a strange doc who uses nutrition to cure cancer.  now, I am not totally poo pooing this concept, but think about it, cancer usually means too late for nutrition.

what’s the protocol prescribed?  oh, just everything we talk about right here at bb.com.  get your vits, uses the individual vits according to problems that arise, eat fresh food, avoid processed foods, no mayo, less red meat and more clean protein, fish oil and salmon, etc.  I am already doing it all

I used to tell people that I wanted my fat included in my milk, because I paid for it.  Think about it, it is priced the same as low fat.  Now, all that cost to remove the fat and they increase the price of the whole milk to equal the price of low fat.  I paid for it, I want it. And I was like that about all foods.  But I am different, I grew up Italian, meaning I eat healthy food all the time, I just add unhealthy food to my diet as a treat.  so I can make that joke.

My wife and my friends grew up "white" meaning they eat crap with crap on top.  All processed foods that mom can heat and serve in 3 min using a microwave.  My dad refuses to eat anything that has been in that thing, not becasue he believes it will kill people who eat it, but because the cook didn’t put in the effort to make the food worthy of his tongue.  and that is the gist.

the doc told my wife that all meat you eat, whether red or white, should be cooked at 225 degrees until the propeer temp (medium well).  Never cook fast, because it converts the meat to carcinogens.  Never undercook, because you’ll die of food poisoning.  225 for as long as it takes.

I call this cooking as if you love the person who will eat it.  considering that YOU are one of the people who will be eating it, it is really bad if you cook too fast.   Lovin’ should take a long time (personally, I don’t think it’s worth it to make love unless you spend 45 min on the deed.)

So, lesson learned from a Phd Nutrionist is two things:

1.  Never eat fast food (even home cooked fast food).  Make it all from scratch, eat a wide variety of foods to get your nutrients

2.  Mike is always right.  You never have the right to doubt.  OK, I’ll let you have the right to doubt, but you are still wrong.

Rest day

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

TDetroit

with squats on Sunday, and sprints on Monday, I am thinking Tuesday should be a rest day.  I can get back to it on Wednesday night for some leg extensions, lunges, and presses.  Plus the upper body stuff.

So what should we talk ablut today.

I know….

The in-laws….

Yes they have invaded the house for the week.  Today they are taling their daughter (my wife) to chemo.   But the problem is, that they wake up and watch the morning show on NBC.  OK!

Listen to me, at this house we watch FOX.  Propaganda is strictly forbidden.  ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, HN, PMSNBC, etc. are all propaganda.  Even the FOX local morning news is ridden with it, but at least they put "some" real news in the mix.

It’s a shame people allow themselves to be brainwashed by the propaganda that calls itself the American Media.  It’s all lies and deceit.

Oh well, some people you just can’t reach.   So you get what we have here today.  Well, they want it, they get it.

Cancer ruins everything

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

TDetroit

I went to the gym today, but it was hardly worth it.  I did get some heavy lifting in, but only did 4 excercises before calling it quits.

after a few days of messed up eating (and the hospital food is horrible), and hardly sleeping, I was very tired very quickly.  so I went to the steam room.

did hit a new high on barbell bent over rows 168 (135 x 8) , so I got that going for me

Here is the change in plans

TDetroit

The surgeon stopped in.  Tomorrow night he will install the port.  a port is a large tube installed near the collar bone, and inserted into the vein coming from the arm, it joins to the vein coming from the head, and then joins the other side in the center under the sternum.  this gathering point is the largest pool of blood in the body.

they can inject chemicals though the port into this pool.  the size of the pool allows the docs to inject a large amount of chemicals without damage or irritation due to the dilution.

chemo will start on Monday.  she will go home on tuesday with a pumpattached to her hip.  this contains the fourth chemical that takes 2 days to inject.  she then goes to the doc on wed to get that removed.

this is the process for 6 weeks.  then they do some testing to see if it is helping.

there was no discussion about the what if beyond that point, but they intend to use the chemo for 5-6 months either way.

A friend passed away

Friday, October 5th, 2007

TDetroit

You are never prepared for that stuff.  I received an e-mail from my friend John.  I told him, whenever he sends me an e-mail, put something relevant in the subject line because I cannot access my personal e-mail from work.  So the message was call John urgently.  Unfortunately, due to spam, my yahoo preview pushed that one off the list.  So today is the first time I checked my mail in 2 days.  I called hime, and he said Gini had passed away.

Totally unexpected.  We just had a club meeting 2 weeks ago.  She just had her first granddaughter, and she was showing a picture of 4 generations of womenm from her mom down to the grand.  John also told me that Gini’s mom had passed away, and the funeral was the day before Gini passed away.

So I like to ask a favor.  During your next workout, please do 1 extra heavy rep for Gini.  A great lady, loved by many.
