Cancer ruins everything

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

TDetroit

I went to the gym today, but it was hardly worth it.  I did get some heavy lifting in, but only did 4 excercises before calling it quits.

after a few days of messed up eating (and the hospital food is horrible), and hardly sleeping, I was very tired very quickly.  so I went to the steam room.

did hit a new high on barbell bent over rows 168 (135 x 8) , so I got that going for me

Here is the change in plans

TDetroit

The surgeon stopped in.  Tomorrow night he will install the port.  a port is a large tube installed near the collar bone, and inserted into the vein coming from the arm, it joins to the vein coming from the head, and then joins the other side in the center under the sternum.  this gathering point is the largest pool of blood in the body.

they can inject chemicals though the port into this pool.  the size of the pool allows the docs to inject a large amount of chemicals without damage or irritation due to the dilution.

chemo will start on Monday.  she will go home on tuesday with a pumpattached to her hip.  this contains the fourth chemical that takes 2 days to inject.  she then goes to the doc on wed to get that removed.

this is the process for 6 weeks.  then they do some testing to see if it is helping.

there was no discussion about the what if beyond that point, but they intend to use the chemo for 5-6 months either way.

perfect pushup test score

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

TDetroit

I am going to drink my shake, eat my cereal and then do the test.  Here goes…..

shake is done… out of bananas, so I had just 3 strawberries…

ok, i just found out that my dumbass sons drank all the milk yesterday, so no cereal…

 here goes….

24 up from 21, that’s a 15% improvement from 20 days ago.

the next question is, should I do another 20 days, or go b ack to regular work outs for 20 days?  I am thinking 1 more time though.  the new superset would be sets of 17, 11 and 7 at each setting (regular, wide, and close).  with that I should be able to to almost to 30 in 1 max set. (remember, you lose 1/3 of your max when you use the perfect pushup- so 21 = 30 on the floor, 24 = 36 on the floor, and 30 = 45 in one set with hands on the floor - these are tougheer pushups, no matter you physique, you start to feel it on the first one, then it’s just commitment after that)

Cancer

TDetroit

that’s what it is.

I rushed back from Jackson, mi to get to the hospital.  I walked in and a few minutes later, the doc walked in.  He explained that my wife had colon cancer and it spread toher liver.  We start kemo this coming week.  5 months of every 2 weeks, min.  if it works, they will surgically remove the colon cancer…

tomorrow is the perfect pushup test day

what a program.  you start out testing for your max (use it in regular position until you fall on your face).  I did 21.

then follow the program.  for me it was 3 sets of 14, 10, and 6 in the regular postion.  then 3 sets (same numbers) of wide pushups, then 3 set (same) of close pushups.  at some point an extra 3 sets of reg pushups was added.  then 3 sets of regular were moved to feet up on chair, and finally, both 3 set groups of regular were moved to feet on chair.

tomorrow I test for max again.  theoretically, I will be able to do more than the original 21.  I hope I get to 25.  What a killer program.

New highs

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

TDetroit

I just got back from the gym.

I hit some new highs in lifting stats.  298 for squats.  really it was 265 x 5, according to the calculator, that’s 298.  Pretty cool.  I would like to get to 2x body weight, but since that moved up from 155 to 175, the goal is getting further away.

On the bench, I hit 165 by 3 (or was it 4)  3 would be 175, 4 would be 178.  I looged 175 (I swear I think it was 4, but I cannot say for sure).  Anyway, the goal was bodyweight by Dec.  I didn’t test in Dec. I did it today.  so I hit bodyweight.

Tried something new today.  You’ll need a ball and a squat rack.  Put the bar at knee level.  Put you feet on the ball while hands on the bar in the up pushup position.  YOu’ll need to make sure the ball is far enough from the bar to get this right.  Roll the ball back until you create a plank between the ball and the bar, then pull until you are in the up pushup position.  It’s a strain on the back, but great on the abs and upper body.

My calf workout has been moved up.  I use half my dead lift max (used to be 135 [270], now it’s 155 [ 310]).  I put a step on the floor, and two plates side by side behind it.  Lift the bar, step bak so heels are on plates, and toes are on step (negative  position), pin shoulder blades together, and lift onto toes, pause, and come down slowly, 15 reps, 3 sets.  Try walking after that!

The muscle oon the shin is starting to wrap around the shin bone.  For forty years, there has been nothing but skin covering that bone, now the muscle is like fingers trying to grab it and wrap around it.

I have the dimples on my quads, the ones on the outside of the leg.  Getting some great definition.  The trainers say they have a hard time getting some fat for the calipeers during the BF% test (I have plenty of belly fat to get to 13-14%)

So, I’ve been asked about the bras.

Monday, January 21st, 2008

TDetroit

Men’s Health has a Q & A about bras.

Here it is:  Can you tell anything about a woman by her bra?

Bright colors = drama queen (avoid at all costs)

Quality high = She takes care of herself, has her own career and money.  (Marry her then divorce her and she will pay you)

Quality Low = She’s looking for a sugar daddy (you will be penniless, but those implants and her new guy will really appreciate your efforts)

too much padding = self conscious, thei kind that get undressed in the dark and never let you see them naked

OK, so I embellished.  But my descfiptions are definitely more funny.

The gist is, look for red or black or natural or white, Good quality in the stiching and lace (no threads), light padding, not too complicated fastening, and a well adjusted strap.

Look for all of this before you date her.  Because if you find out she wears the wrong bra after the date (ie, the morning just before breakfast), you could be in deep doo.

I am not the only one with a rant against Cosmo!

Monday, January 21st, 2008

TDetroit

Got  the new issue of men’s Health (I really should subscribe, the newstand is too expensive).  I was reading the Q & A near the beginning, and a guy was asking for advice about his girlfriend and sex.  (Cool subject)  It seams she likes to stare intently into his eyes during sex (now that’s weird, I mean look now and then, but stare without blinking…?)  Anyway, the advice guy says she probably read in Cosmo about how looking intently into one-anothers eyes creates a more emotional … yada, yada… just keep huffing and puffing dude!

Anyway, there you go.  Ladies, I am begging you.  quit reading that gobble dee goop.  Better yet, quit giving each other advice (it’s all wrong anyway).  Listen, if we are toe to toe, and tummy to tummy, and the bodies are slappin’, we are either emotionally connected already, or it doesn’t matter.

Why does everything have to be about emotional attachment, don’t you just want to get nasty?

Anyway, it’s good to know I am not alone in condemming the Cosma sex advice.  Now we have candles and staring weirdly into each others eyes.  If you ladies keep this up, we guys might start putting a bag over your head.

this month’s Men’s Health has a great Q & A on women’s choice in bras.  Now if we can only get a close look at the thing before we ask her out a on a date, we’ll be all set.  "Hey, I’d like to ask you out for a cup of coffee, but I’ll need to check out your bra first."  What do you think?  Is it a good pick up line?

VLC = Very Low Carbs diet

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

TDetroit

Last thursday night I had a slice of pizza (not the greasy transfat chain store kind, Tony’s Pizzeria in Madison Heights, best in Detroit, only us Italians know about it.), and a few cookies at a club meeting.

That has been my last official carbs since then.  Other than ketchup, one leaf of lettuce a tomato slice and 3 pickle slices with my bunless burger, a small dash of peppers in my egg beaters, snuck 3 fries from my son… little touches like that.

Friday, nothing

Satueday, nothing

Sunday, down 7 pounds.  Could be just a simple bounce (or dip as the case may be), but I have also noticed the sweating when the hunger gets high.  It’s like working out sweat.  It just pours out.  Trying to keep at the work outs too.  Haven’t been getting to Lifetime, but I get a lot done right here at home.  for cardio, I am doing mountain climbers, and for weights, I’ve got the DB’s.  Planning on going to Lifetime today.

Looking to burn down the fat and work at these love handles.  I posted a pole in the forums to ask what should I work next, arms or love handles.  2 to 1 vote for arms.  But the arguements for lovehandles made more sense.  If I go with the arms, the love handles will probably grow too.  But if I work on the handles, the arms lose nothing, and I can come back for them in april/May time frame.  Besides, the arms aren’t all that small - a lot of people are asking about my guns - I just wish the wrist muscles would develop and make the forearms larger.

http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=6555991

also, getting a great arms workout from the perfect pushup thingy.  I know you are supposed to get a chest work out from pushups, but this thingy is much more than that.  Herman Moore told me it’s all he does, if it’s good enough for a reciever who had Jerry Rice and Chris Carter as his backups in the probowl, then it’s good enough for me.

Problem with the VLC diet, I am hungry all the time.  there are no cals in protein.  It’s the only thing I eat.  Stomach is grumbling like crazy.  going back to the carbs tomorrow for the work week (I cannot be grumpy in my position), and then cut out again on thursday night.  I’ll try to keep it low on M-W

New diet idea

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

TDetroit

I’ve been hearing a lot of people say "Don’t eat carbs after 7 pm".   Well, I know it works, and I’ve been using it.  Theory is, no carbs after 7 pm, head off to bed by 9:30 or 10, slepp all night with no carbs.  You are forcing your body to reconvert fat for your sleeping energy (which isn’t much).

But, I thought to myself, if it isn’t much energy, then is it enough time?, is it the right time?  Wouldn’t it make sense to eat no carbs once you wake up and then carb load at 7pm before bed?  This way you rconvert during the day when you expend energy.  Problem here is the meanness.  You will be a bad worker because of your irratability.  (most people are irritable anyway, so go ahead)

Here’s what I came up with.  Since I always workout in the mornings, just a little to start my day.  I will do bent over rows, or pushups, or situps, or curls, and mix them up.  total of 3-4 excercises each morning, a few sets each.

So I eat no carbs after 7pm, go to bed at 10, sleep and reconvert all night, wake up and have a protein shake with a banana (the only carb), do my excercises, get the kids on the bus, shower, check my e-mail (slow dial up), make an omeltte with egg beaters and a tidbit of peppers (just a touch more carbs) then go to work, no carbs until 1 pm meal.  A full 18 hours a day with minimal carbs.

does it work?  Well, I was doing bent over rows with DBs a few days ago.  Usually I look out the window, this time I looked at the mirror.  Hey, I’m ripped.  The upper traps and deltoids (from the front) are really popping.  I have veins straining to get out, and the muscles are defined.  Too bad all this only happens under the strain of weights, but the low carb effect is paying off.

No irritability during the day when I eat the carbs, and some people have been asking about the guns, and how much I weigh (because I seem bigger).  Body fat is down to almost 12% (40 years old this past month.

I think this is working.  Simpy extend you no carb time to after lunch from 7 pm the night before.
