Guns

This is a bit off the normal topic of conversation, but since there are many military people on this site, I thought it make be as good a place as any to ask…

So… I’ve never fired a gun in my life.  Not once.  And I’ve started to have the desire to learn how.  I’d like to everntually feel confortable enough to buy and keep one or more guns in my home for self-defense, etc.  But honestly, I feel completely overwhelmed by the idea of it.  I wouldn’t even know where to begin…  Are there places one can take a class for "Guns for Dummies?"

Yes and no. Sometimes too much information is no information at all…

Yep, there are. Check your state for hunting license info (when I lived in FL, I had to take a gun safety course in order to get my duck hunting license). You can also check for local shooting ranges & gun clubs.

SG…….I guess it really stands for Shoots Guns. :D

Most of your local shooting centers will let you rent a gun and will even instruct you on how to fire it. Just be upfront about not knowing a thing and tell them you are in the market to purchase but want to try before you buy. I have a Glock 17, very easy to load the clip, chamber a round, and shoot.
Then once you decide take the gun safety course that way you learn the local laws concerning using a firearm in self defense.

Like the others wrote, "guns for dummies" is called "gun safety".

Like Jonahgirl commented, you can sign up for everything from basic gun safety to concealed carry to tactical shooting classes at most shooting ranges and some gun stores. Everything she posted was spot on. There is no mystery in firearms. Very simple. Very straighforward.

My first firearm was a gift for Christmas when I was 9. I literally grew up with firearms and was taught from day one their power and my responsibility as an owner. It’s something I still do not f*ck around with.
