Best Day Here Yet!

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Calories - 1,401
Fat - 65 g
Carbs - 98 g
Protein - 106 g

Yay! My best day nutritionally since I have been in college =] It only took me 6 weeks to figure it out lol, now I just gotta keep it up! If this had happened 6 months ago I would have been picky about not getting enough fiber (only 12 grams today)

While I didn’t do any cardio or strength training today, my roommate and I climbed a hill, 5 miles in about an hour. So it definetly was better than just walking around campus.

The plan for the future is to keep staying away from any refined carbs… Just fruits and veggies and occasionally yogurt. And to consume as much protein as you can. So I am now okay with the fact that I will need to be eating more off campus (ie paying for it myself) to get the protein I need. I also need to be consistent with my strength training!! Updates later in the week!

Activity Patterns

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

Since being settled in college I have decided the following plan. Based on the fact that some times I over eat and some times I under eat (higher on the carbs and lower on the protein) I need to plan my diet around my weekly activity patterns. Lets say Mondays are the start of the week, I have high motivation to workout and start the week right so i do, eating close to 100 g of protein and 120 g carbs. As the week goes on, I move from large body part workouts to small muscle groups by wednesday and thursday. Because my motivation is low the carb to protein ratio grows unfavorably. Then comes the weekend, party time. While yes Im consuming alcohol late at night and also probably getting the munchies mulitple times I consume alot of carbs between 8 and 2 pm. However I am constantly walking around the city from place to place. I still use my phone as a pedometer so I can track what I am doing without reliezing it. I’ve found that in general, the walking makes up for the extra calories and sugars I consume. Its wednesdays and thursdays that I over eat the most without any motivation to workout harder/longer.

So from this week on, I will be as balanced as possible on Mondays and Tuesdays, lower my carbs on wednesdays, schedule some additional cardio on thursdays to make up for overeating on that day and then let Fridays and Saturdays continue as normal. The inactivity on Sundays will be displaced by a big leg and possibly back workout on Sunday night when the gym is slow.

Switch to ING

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

Last week I took all of my savings and put them in an online "Orange" savings account from ING. Already I have earned $25 just for signing up! For the month of September I earned $2.11 in interest, which is double what I would have earned if I kept my money with my hometown bank.

I still of course have to keep that account open as a checking account to transfer money and to use my debit card, which I still get points and cashback for using. In 4 years I will have earned over $800 more intrest than I would have with the old savings account with a less than .5% apy.

High Maltose Corn Syrup

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Lately people have been avoiding processed, unnatural ingredients as much as possible. High Fructose Corn Syrup is regarded by bodybuilding buffs, nutritionists and organic eaters as an ingredient to be avoided at all costs! However I was reading a label for a fiber bar and found High Maltose Corn Syrup (also called Maltodextrin) right next to High Fructose Corn Syrup. They are both 2-glucose corn syrups. While its not necessarily dangerous, because our bodies can break the two molecules apart, its unnatural and relatively new to humans. From a fitness perspective, staying away from it will force you to stick with more natural foods, you don’t want that goopy extra sugar in your system anyways

Friday Mornings

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Woke up early. My roommate is away so did have to worry about being quiet or keeping the lights dim. Went to breakfast at 7:20 had 3 eggs, coffee with splenda, a sausage link and low-fat organic strawberry yogurt. Ate alone because my friend is still pretty sick. I decided I like eating alone so early on a Friday anyways.

Then I had Chemistry Lab, which was simple and easy so we were all done in about an hour. Off to the gym! I didn’t stop back at my dorm because I knew something would distract me. There were only 2 other guys in there when I started working my back. Towards to end I did Chest and a few more people had trickled in but not enough for it to be distracting or uncomfortable.

Im probably going to try to get up and go to the gym at 10 am (thats when they open on weekends) and have a muscle milk in my room before I go and then go to the dining commons after Im done. On Monday, if I can keep it up, I’ll meet Sam for breakfast at 9:30 when her class ends, so again I’ll be in the gym at 10 am. I’ll have a muscle milk after my workout on that day.

Weekend (Re)Plans

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Not going away this weekend. Already cleared my whole schedule for it. On the bright side I wont be distracted by anything and I can get down a huge chunk of my 20 page paper due at the beginning of December. The more I get done now the less I will have to do for the rest of the semester. Now I can also go the "Musclebound" A performance/documentary about male body dysmorphia. Should be sweet. Plus it is extra credit for my Health class. Then I will have tons of time to catch up on my workouts and much needed cardio. Its only Thursday, so lets just see how this first night goes.

The Week

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Past 7 days has been a blur. I’m too content with my coffee and my music to try to think about anything else. Spent 5 nights at Taylors. Rachel is still sick. Sam is getting sick. Keep putting off working out. Nutrition is good, Muscle milk makes that easy. Not remembering to take biotin or other supplements but I am remembering to take my migraine pill before bed. Works like a charm =] Going to my roommate Rachels town tomorow for the weekend. Going to visit Kayla in fairfeild one of those days too.
