(Some) One Of My Worst Fears Came True

I have some gym fears and one of them is getting stuck under the leg press.  Another fear I have is doing something to embarrass myself at the gym.

This morning….I did both.

One of the goals set for me for the end of September was to press 4 plates on each side, totalling 360 lbs., for 6 reps.

Well, I got psyched up for it and told my gym partner that I was going for it.  She said, "You ARE?"  I said, "Yes.  I’m doing it."

So we set up the 360 lbs. and I got positioned.

I unhooked the safety latches (bars…whatever) and I let the sled come down, then I pressed it up.

I let it come down again…tried to press it up again…and said, "No, can’t get it back up" and tried to reengage the safety bars, but the sled was too far down and I couldn’t get the sled up enough.

The sled slid lower down….and I realized there are no safety stops on this damn machine!

So here I am, with my knees pressed against my shoulders, my partner is trying to lift the sled, and I am laughing my a$$ off.

I finally figure out:

Remove the plates!

So she starts removing the plates and has to take just about every one of them off before I could press the sled up again.

And I’m laughing the whole time.  I don’t know what got into me, but the whole damn thing was so comical and my partner was laughing as she was removing the plates and just laying them haphazardly all over the floor.

She was bent over with laughter and trying to catch her breath from the workout she got.  I couldn’t even get a word out, I was all out of breath from the adrenaline rush and laughing.

I just thanked GAWD she was with me when this happened.  I would’ve HATED to have to call out for someone to help me out of that thing.

So then we put away the plates and finished our leg workout like nothing ever happened……

Until I took a swig of water, thought about what happened and nearly choked from laughing.

Body Building is a humbiling experience…LOL..Glad you didn"t get hurt…

Well, at least no one got hurt and you had a good laugh. :) I am sure I might of been laughing too if I walked by and saw you stuck in that position. Been there before myself.

I remember feeling brave in my home gym once and tried a max bench press. Bad move.. got down and it wasn’t coming back up. I couldn’t push it off and the weights were screwed on so I started yelling for my wife. Felt like an idiot and she was fast asleep and didn’t hear me. I sat for like 10 mins trying to figure out how to get out of my delemia.. finally dumped it kinda sideways enough for me to get out from underneath it.

That is a lot of weight to move. You did great for even two presses.

OMG! I would say you were ROFL, but you couldn’t! Glad you didn’t get hurt and that you can laugh about it. That has been my only fear of the lef press with wanting to do more, getting squashed! I don’t have a buddy and it’s hard to get someone to spot you when your not "in" the crowd. I have made 560 and want to do 600 but my 6th rep at 560 the plate told me not to try it again, or else…..(then your visual pops into mind)

you are funny shan. funny ha ha, not funny queer. not that there is anything wrong with that.

  7. renew1 Says:

The main reason I will not I repeat not do leg press without my trainer no way no how. thanks for the good laugh.

  8. Ledford45 Says:

Thought about that same thing as I was doing leg press this morning. As others have said, just glad you didn’t hurt yourself.

  9. fitclubmom Says:

Damn… I wish I could have been there to see that! :-) I mean that in the nicest possible way! lol

Been there, done that, sort of. Squats about 25 years ago. Sweat pants too tight (you had to be there), too much weight and no spotter. Little ‘ol me couldn’t get back up after rep number 2 and I rocked forward, split my pants and bounced my head off the cross bar on the squat rack. Fell backwards on my ass and the rack caught the brunt. My forehead was bleeding, my ass was hanging out and my ego was severly lacerated. I didn’t do squats for over a year.

At least you didn’t break anything, you had a partner and you got a good laugh out of it.

Shannon lives to paint another day.

Wow, nothing to add, except most of us have been there (if you w/o long enough….). Happened to me on bench press.

Sure wish Crab had a video……Youtube.

  12. TheCrab Says:

It would have been black and white video back then. I’m glad it didn’t happen recently or some a hole with a Blackberry would have shot the whole thing.

  13. KC5280 Says:

OMG - I would have loved to see that :-) Glad you didn’t get hurt. If it makes you feel better, some guy had to come running over to help me on the bench last night cause I was stuck.. total embarassment. oh well. Still got it done..

  14. MAGL Says:

Thats pretty funny. Pretty awesome that you were laughin about it too!

And then I laughed at Kim’s comment! lol

  15. damien12341 Says:

I can’t do that at my gym or I’d get sued cause some geriatric would try to help and throw their back out! I do it for them…. You survived that’s what counts!

  16. kulzor Says:

Some people never push their limits - at least you know where your current limit is at. ;P That and you know to always have your friend on hand just in case…

Makes me very glad I setup my cable machine so the bar can’t snap back and swat me if I run out of steam (which I have…).

Next week do at least 3 of those! :)

  17. Ilove2pump Says:

Hahahah - glad you didn’t get hurt though!
Been there before on bench press too in university, - I was doing my final burnout set - roommate left to hit the shower and I got stuck - ended up having to roll the bar down off my chest - had a sore chest for days… probably bruised my ribs Ughhh. - Oh well - didn’t stop me :)

  18. trixter747 Says:

Legs will never be the same again… Next time bring a camera and post the video!

  19. WaynesWorld Says:

Oh Shannon, you have got to see my blog post from today and watch the video. After going through that you would appreciate it

  20. Veronique Says:

Very funny. But I’m glad you survived. :)

  21. HermTheWorm Says:

I guess that is the Polish half of you, Shannypants.

When you do heavy leg presses you should put your hands on your knees (lightly) as a guide so that if that happens, you can push your knees up with your hands/arms.

You also should do that so you can knock out a few more forced reps at the end of your set.

    Jesus f-cking Christ. Unbelievable.
